Chapter 117: Chapter 117

"My lord," he said quietly, "there is nothing more I can do for her. Her wounds are too deep. She is losing blood faster than we can replace it, and there are injuries inside her that cannot be treated with the remedies we have."

Meical’s shoulders flinched, but he said nothing.

The physician continued, voice heavy with regret. "Your parents and brother... their deaths were instantaneous. They suffered no pain. Their hearts were pierced. There was no way to save them."

Silence fell again.

Sanya shuddered weakly, another tear sliding down her cheek.

Min jae pressed a hand to his mouth as his eyes watered further. Modern medicine would have saved her. Machines could have stabilized her. A hospital could have given her a chance.

But here... here nothing could.

He wished he could change the world for Meical. He wished he could drag a hospital into this room with sheer will. He wished he could erase this pain.

But all he could do was watch.

And all Meical could do was break silently beside his dying sister.

Min-jae dragged Meical to a corner of the hall, out of sight from the physician and the other servants. His hands were firm on Meical’s shoulders, guiding him like a lifeline in the storm.

"I have to leave," Min-jae said quietly, almost to himself. His eyes avoided Meical’s. "Before the castle guards arrive, before it’s too late."

Meical’s head snapped up. "Leave? No. If you’re leaving, we go together."

Min-jae shook his head. "I can’t. You cannot come with me. You have to stay here."

"Why? What good would it do if you run while I stay?" Meical asked, his voice low but sharp. "We survive together, or not at all."

"I must handle Seraphine," Min-jae said, voice tight. "And Radomir... you have to handle him. That’s the only way we’ll be safe. If I am caught, if I am out of the picture, it falls to you. You must survive. You must stay alive."

"I don’t want to hear this from you. You must stay alive.."

He drew a deep breath and called Odysseus over.

"Odysseus..." Meical said, his voice low but determined, "if he must go, you and Saar go with him. Vanadis will stay with me.."

He turned back to Min-jae "Don’t worry about your safety, Odysseus is more than capable. He will protect you. You must go now.."

Min-jae looked at him, the faintest nod of acknowledgment passing over his expression. "I understand," he said. "You have to stay safe. You must."

He began to take three steps toward the door, each one deliberate, the weight of urgency in his movement.

Meical acted without hesitation. He wrapped his arms around Min-jae, pulling him close. "Stay safe," he said, pressing his forehead against Min-jae’s chest. "Come back to me. No matter what."

Min-jae’s hand went to Meical’s back, squeezing lightly. He let out a small sigh that betrayed both exhaustion and regret. "I will," he murmured.

He pulled back just enough to meet Meical’s eyes. "Take care of Radomir too," he said quietly, the words heavy with meaning.

"If he’s out of picture, if Seraphine is out of the picture. Our lives will be peaceful."

Meical nodded, his grip on Min-jae tightening for a moment longer before letting go. The hall was quiet except for their breathing. Min-jae straightened, took a deep breath, and then turned, his figure moving swiftly toward the exit.

Meical watched him go, a storm of fear and determination raging behind his eyes. The estate was silent around him, but the weight of what had just happened and what must be done next pressed on him like the heaviest of stones.

Saar handed Min-jae a cloak, the dark fabric heavy in his hands. "You’ll need this," he said, voice low and steady. "We can’t take the carriage. The guards will be watching, and the estate isn’t safe. The forest is the only way out."

Min-jae took the cloak, letting it settle over his shoulders. He adjusted the hood over his head, hiding most of his face. Saar knew the general layout of the surrounding lands well, the forest paths that could lead them undetected to the neighboring town. That knowledge was invaluable.

Before moving, Min-jae turned back one last time. He looked at the estate, at the doorway where Meical stood. Meical’s posture was rigid, but his eyes followed every movement. There was worry, defiance, and something more, a silent plea that Min-jae could feel even from this distance.

The sight steeled him. He would clear his name. He would deal with Seraphine. And he would return to Meical. Nothing would stop him from coming back.

Saar spoke again, drawing Min-jae from his thoughts. "We cannot remain in Aldoria. The neighboring town is our only chance at refuge. From there, we can plan our next steps."

Min-jae nodded, the resolve in his chest solidifying. "Understood."

With one final glance at the estate, he stepped into the forest behind Saar. The canopy swallowed them, the estate fading from sight.

Each step forward was heavy with purpose, each breath a reminder of the promise he had made.

Somewhere beyond this forest, beyond the danger and chaos,

Meical waited for him.

And he would return.

Min-jae, Saar, and Odysseus moved swiftly through the forest, each step deliberate, keeping low and avoiding open spaces. Saar knew the surrounding terrain well, allowing them to skirt the main roads and remain hidden from the castle guards.

From the shadows of the trees, Min-jae could see the multitude of royal guards marching toward the estate, their banners and torches flickering in the distance. His chest tightened, and his hands clenched into fists.

Every life lost, every innocent caught in the chaos, it all weighed on him.

He promised himself he would make Seraphine pay for what she had done. Every death, every ounce of pain she had caused, she would answer for it.

Meanwhile, far away in her chambers, Seraphine sat at a long table, her posture composed, her fingers drumming lightly on the polished wood. Her men stood before her, reporting the chaos she had set in motion.

"Kaizar is now a wanted criminal," one said, bowing slightly. "The king has dispatched royal guards to capture and eliminate him. Meical’s family... they have been killed."

Seraphine’s lips pressed into a thin line. The king’s murder of Meical’s family was not part of her plan. She had wanted Meical for herself, but she did not want him to hate her or worse, to suspect her involvement.

She waved her hand, dismissing the messenger. "Keep me informed the moment Kaizar is captured or killed," she said, her voice calm but firm. "I want him alive for now. Do not fail me."

Her eyes lingered on the empty space where her subordinate once stood.

She would have to be careful to ensure Meical never connected her to their deaths or it could place a huge dent on her plans.

The delicate balance she had maintained was cracking, and if she did not act carefully, everything could unravel.

Back in the forest, the trio pressed on. Min-jae’s steps were deliberate but measured, the cloak weighing on him, but not as heavily as the knowledge of the devastation he had left behind. Saar moved ahead, scanning the trees, whispering occasional instructions. Odysseus stayed close, offering a steady presence.

From the forest’s edge, Min-jae caught sight of the estate one last time. Smoke curled upward, mingling with the darkening sky. His chest ached at the image of Meical standing there, a solitary figure amidst the carnage. He whispered to himself, a vow almost lost in the wind. "I will return. I will fix this. I will keep my promise."

They came into a small opening, which was separated by a small lake and at the other side was another patch of trees.

"This will take us to the neighboring town. Once we cross this lake, we are no longer in Aldoria.."

Saar waded into the water first, checking the depth. Odysseus followed, steady and silent. Min jae stepped in last. The cold wrapped around his legs and rose slowly up his body, but he kept moving. The water came to his waist, then his ribs. Saar moved ahead with sure steps, guiding them toward the other bank.

Min jae’s breath hitched as the sound of marching reached them again. The forest behind them shifted with noise. The guards were closer now. Torches flickered through the trees.

Odysseus placed a hand on Min jae’s back. "Do not look behind you. Keep moving."
