Out of Control: Into Your Everything-Chapter 155: Don’t Want Me to Hear?
"How much of my conversation with Anna did you hear just now?"
Scarlett Shaw suddenly asked.
The person in her arms trembled slightly, though not entirely from the touch. Ryan Ford leaned back, his eyes meeting hers, hands returning to her waist, and said calmly and rationally:
"Until you said to your mother, why wasn’t it her who died."
Sitting on Ryan Ford’s lap, Scarlett Shaw could clearly sense the man’s unease.
But Ryan Ford had the ability, even if desire surged in one second, to remain composed and speak the most rational words in the next.
Scarlett Shaw hesitated for a moment, lowering her almond eyes, the pink from the kisses fading from her skin, her breath filled with obvious disappointment.
Ryan Ford squeezed her palm, "Didn’t want me to hear it?"
Scarlett Shaw nodded sulkily, "Yeah."
Everyone has a dark side they don’t want others to see, and saying those words to anyone would be extremely disrespectful and hurtful, especially when the person is your own mother.
Yet those words came out of her mouth without mercy.
She could imagine how vicious she must have looked then; she didn’t want Ryan Ford to see her like that.
"Am I being really rebellious, even cursing my own parent?"
Scarlett Shaw said in a small voice.
Ryan Ford raised an eyebrow, replied bluntly, "You’re quite something, while other parents might curse their kids carelessly, you’ve turned it around, cursing your own mother."
Scarlett Shaw was both angry and ashamed, "Does that sound like a compliment to you?"
Ryan Ford: "You’re usually good at the self-consoling spirit of Ah Q, so taking it as a compliment isn’t impossible."
Scarlett Shaw: "..."
Ryan Ford moved her to the passenger seat, leaned over to fasten her seatbelt, and as he returned to the driver’s seat, he heard Scarlett Shaw say:
"You’ve listened to my conversation with my mom from start to finish, and she’s said so many excessive things, even telling me to leave you sooner. Why didn’t you get mad?"
"Would you leave me because of her words?" Ryan Ford countered.
Scarlett Shaw touched her nose.
No, she wouldn’t.
"When Anna said that you should leave me soon, her expression was completely different from before."
Ryan Ford suddenly said.
Scarlett Shaw was slightly stunned.
As a participant and being driven by emotion, she noticed limited details. Ryan Ford’s mention made her realize that Anna’s urging for her to get money yet leave Ryan Ford was inherently contradictory.
Scarlett Shaw: "Are you saying she might have been lying before?"
Ryan Ford never speculates without evidence, "I can’t judge whether the things Anna said to you are true or not, but her purpose is clear; she doesn’t want you to find her. As for the reason, it might be what she said or perhaps something else."
Hearing the last word, Scarlett Shaw’s eyes flickered as she pursed her lips.
Couples make up after fights, so much more for a mother and daughter who used to be close.
Even if the "other reason" is slim, or if there’s a worse possibility, she couldn’t help but lean towards that slim hope.
Ryan Ford drove the car, catching a glimpse of the sorrow and regret Scarlett Shaw was trying to hide from the corner of her eyes, but didn’t speak comforting words immediately.
Only after passing the next traffic light did he calmly ask, "When you saw Anna earlier, what was she doing? Why do you think she was there?"
Scarlett Shaw: "She was observing the person brought in by the ambulance. I heard people chatting beside me saying it was a police officer injured while on duty and was in a critical condition."
Ryan Ford paused slightly, "That officer might be a clue. Do you want to follow this lead?"
The implication being he could help her.
Scarlett Shaw’s heart stirred, but she didn’t know how to reply.
Honestly, she didn’t know if she should continue the investigation. If it was before today, she still had the obsession to ask Anna for answers.
But today, as Anna said, regardless of the truth, the main theme was clear—as Ryan Ford said—
Their mother-daughter relationship ended there, from now on, having nothing to do with each other.
Scarlett Shaw remained silent for a long time, her eyes full of fluctuating emotions and struggle.
Ryan Ford saw it and thought for a moment before saying:
"Ryan Ford previously lost track of Anna during an investigation. With his skills, he wouldn’t easily lose someone."
"And now, from your description, Anna should know the injured officer. She managed to hide her identity for years, stayed calm even when seen by you, probably having a professional with criminal investigation techniques assisting her."
"She doesn’t want you to continue investigating her, perhaps because she has something more important to do and doesn’t want you involved."
Ryan Ford’s words were cold and logical.
Even with Scarlett Shaw’s now deteriorating relationship with Anna, and her suspected involvement in Ryan’s mother’s death, there was no bias.
Even if it was just speculation, when he said it, it was incredibly convincing.
Scarlett Shaw contemplated for a while, still full of doubts, "But in my memory, neither my dad nor my mom ever dealt with the police."
Ryan Ford: "Parents can easily hide things from their children."
Scarlett Shaw remained silent.
After a long time, she seemed to seek advice, "Do you think I should investigate further?"
Emotions between people are truly a marvelous thing.
Even before they were together, Scarlett Shaw wouldn’t dare ask Ryan Ford this question.
Even if she did, let alone getting any constructive advice, it would be lucky if he didn’t say, "It’s your own business and doesn’t concern me," with a good mood.
But now, Scarlett Shaw’s inner voice confidently told her that Ryan Ford would take her question seriously.
Like a wandering boat finding a harbor, a drifting dandelion landing in the soil.
Just asking this question gave her a sense of reassurance that she had never felt before.
"Whatever reason Anna has for doing this, I don’t know, but in this life, what people ultimately seek is the realization of self-worth."
Ryan Ford’s voice was cold, calm, and rational.
"Some can achieve it through family and relationships, some through careers, and, of course, some find satisfaction in committing wrongdoing."
"As for your mother, she should have something she wants to pursue, something that fulfills her idea of life’s worth, even though we don’t understand and perhaps never will."
Scarlett Shaw had suffered due to Ryan Ford’s over-rationality before.
Yet, she had to admit, in moments like this, his rationality was reassuring.
Even though he didn’t give her a definitive choice, Scarlett Shaw already knew the answer after hearing his words.
Ryan Ford drove into the Cloud Mansion’s garage.
He parked, got out, went to the passenger side, and opened the door like a gentleman. As he held Scarlett Shaw’s hand, she jumped onto him like a magical cat.
He caught her steadily.
Scarlett Shaw held her boyfriend’s face, looking extremely serious.
Her gaze was steadfast, lingering for a long time without moving away.
