Out of Control: Into Your Everything-Chapter 213: Maybe You Should See a Neurologist
By the end of July, the time flew by swiftly.
Julian Ford was recovering quite well after his surgery. Even Dr. Lawson mentioned that his willpower was much stronger than the average person, and his recovery was better than expected.
This past month, Ryan Ford spent most of his free time at the hospital, apart from handling some necessary cases. Yet, he felt that his brother’s emotional and mental state as a patient was a hundred times more stable than his own.
Sometimes, he would be on the phone, yelling at the other end, and when he turned around, he’d see his brother sitting at the table with a Mac, its screen displaying financial data that Ryan couldn’t comprehend. Julian would only glance at him faintly.
The disdain in his eyes was evident: too noisy.
Nevertheless, Ryan felt uneasy keeping silent, so he blurted out, "Bro, it’s been just a month since your surgery, and you’re already diving into this brain-taxing stuff. Can your brain handle it?"
Actually, Julian had started dealing with Veridian’s matters again after just half a month.
Aside from checking data, he sometimes contacted clients, although not with the intensity he used to.
"The brain is meant for thinking. Is yours merely ornamental? Or is it worth a billion yet never used?"
"..."
Ryan seriously suspected that during the surgery, Dr. Lawson might have added a few doses of sharp sarcasm to his brother’s brain.
His words were increasingly merciless.
However, seeing Julian’s currently serene demeanor, the previous worries Ryan and Ezra Ford had about him becoming like Freya Pierce gradually dissipated.
Yet, Ryan occasionally had the illusion that Scarlett Shaw had never even appeared in his brother’s world.
It wasn’t unreasonable to think so.
Over the past month, apart from the ruckus between Ezra Ford and Freya Pierce, Scarlett’s name was barely mentioned.
Julian never brought her up.
Ryan feared provoking his brother, so he didn’t dare mention her either.
Only when Jasper Spencer visited Julian did he insensitively bring it up.
Yana Yarrow came along with Jasper.
Her main purpose was to convey that if Julian suddenly wanted to hear what Scarlett had to say, she could let him know.
But Julian didn’t.
He never once asked about Scarlett from beginning to end.
Ultimately, Jasper’s brain seemed to have taken a hit, as he nostalgically and sentimentally brought it up:
"The last time we gathered was at Mr. Sutton’s club, munching on chicken feet while listening to Scarlett tell stories. It was so fun!"
"Julian, after your radiation therapy, shouldn’t you pack up and find Scarlett?"
Honestly, being one-track-minded has its benefits. Even as lifelong adversaries, Jasper didn’t shy away from mentioning the name no one dared to bring up in Julian’s presence.
And he did so quite audaciously.
Ryan and Yana almost instantly perked up their ears, covertly monitoring Julian.
Their curiosity was unbearable.
Yana couldn’t help but think that given Julian and Scarlett’s previous interactions, it would definitely be interesting if Scarlett were brought back by Julian.
However, the saying "the greater the expectation, the greater the disappointment" wasn’t unfounded.
Julian’s fingers paused on the keyboard, casting a faint glance at Jasper, and said indifferently:
"Who told you I want to find her."
Jasper was stunned, yet again.
Julian’s cold gaze drifted from his face to Yana’s face.
His expression was light and casual, with a hint of laziness.
Even though there was no aggressiveness in his demeanor, Yana felt a sudden overwhelming pressure, instinctively retreating behind Jasper.
Julian: "I won’t look for her, just as she wishes, isn’t it."
Yana’s face turned pale.
She felt uneasy but couldn’t pinpoint why.
The Scarlett who came to see her that night, was just like Julian now—calm and revealing no traces of abnormality. Had it not been for the words Scarlett asked her to convey still linger in her mind, she might have thought it was all just a dream.
Back then, Scarlett spoke softly, "He’s so smart, so he understands me well. Even if he doesn’t want to hear, he surely knows what I would say."
When she uttered these words, Scarlett seemed more mature and composed than Yana had ever seen her.
Yet Yana still sensed her friend’s pain.
The kind of pain that hibernates and has nowhere to be expressed.
Even in front of her best friend, it could not be released.
Yana felt her Scarlett was aggrieved, clearly suffering but unable to express her pain even before her. Her Scarlett must have shed many tears unnoticed by them.
But —
She couldn’t help but look at Julian.
The man sat by the window, his long legs crossed, and his sharp features looked even frostier under the fallen moonlight.
The incandescent light in the room was bright, and Jasper and Ryan already began their aimless bickering, adding to the lively atmosphere, while Julian seemed isolated from it.
Although he rarely partook in the childish tussles of these two "pigs" before,
it was still different.
The world of the forsaken person lost its balance when another person walked away, and returning to the world before was utterly impossible.
During their pig-nose banter, Jasper caught a glance of Julian raising the water glass on the table, noticing the conspicuous ring on his ring finger.
"Hey, Ford —!!!"
Stunned!
Jasper’s eyes widened like saucers, his shock-minded heart, trembling hand, pointed in disbelief at Julian.
Following his gaze, the others looked over.
The simple ring was tightly wrapped around Julian’s slender finger, although the style was basic, it glimmered as if it reigned in brilliance.
Like a star.
"Scarlett hasn’t been seen for a month, and you got engaged to another woman? Julian, isn’t that too quick to lose interest?!"
Jasper was both disheartened and furious.
A person of such qualities, encountering such an unrefined archrival? Does it not degrade his character?
Julian elegantly sipped water and lazily glanced at Jasper, saying to Yana: "When you take him away, drop by the neurology clinic and book an appointment. Reaching middle age without using the brain leads to dementia."
Jasper: "..."
Whose brain is sick after all!!!
According to the saying, when the fire doesn’t burn you, spectating from the safe side is undeniably enjoyable.
Although Ryan learned a few days ago that the ring was a gift from Scarlett before her departure, he wasn’t planning to disclose it, enjoying the spectacle — who wouldn’t?
Little did he know that the fire was about to spread to him the next second.
Julian gestured at him with his fingertips, "You go along too."
Ryan: "..."
"Bro!" Ryan protested for himself, "Aren’t we still good brothers?"
Julian remained indifferent, "By treating you as a brother, I’m letting you go with them, otherwise how would you find your way? Waiting for me to collect you from Lost and Found?"
Ryan: "..." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
The two "pigs," Oh no, the two gentlemen advised to visit neurology left the room in frustration, stunned by Julian’s unexpectedly high level of offense and defense.
"Is his brain really sick? How did he become even more provocative after surgery?" Jasper fumed, "Does anyone humiliate others like this? His own fickleness, yet he won’t let it be mentioned?"
Ryan, Yana: "..."
"Perhaps, we really should visit neurology."
Yana suggested sincerely.
Ryan nodded in agreement and said to Jasper: "I won’t go, my brain is certainly better than yours."
At least he finally realized that his brother wasn’t indifferent, he was feigning calmness, venting annoyance on them!
Otherwise, why hadn’t the ring Scarlett gifted ever been removed since the surgery?
