The Hashira didn't hesitate. With a single, unspoken agreement, they moved as one, a flurry of deadly motion that filled the clearing with an overwhelming sense of power. Each attack carried the weight of their respective mastery.
Gyomei was the first to strike. Despite his towering frame, his movements were deceptively swift, and his massive spiked flail came crashing down with earth-shattering force. The ground beneath me cracked and groaned as the shockwave of his attack rippled outward. I sidestepped effortlessly, letting the spiked head of his weapon embed itself into the ground mere inches from where I stood.
Rengoku seized the opening. With a booming war cry, his blade ignited in vibrant, roaring flames. "Flame Breathing, Fourth Form: Blooming Flame Undulation!" he shouted, slashing his sword in a wide arc. A wave of fiery energy surged toward me, the intense heat licking at the air.
I raised a hand casually, and with a slight motion, the flames parted around me, as though I were surrounded by an invisible barrier. "Impressive," I remarked. "Your control over your flame techniques is remarkable."
Rengoku's fiery eyes widened briefly in surprise but quickly reignited with determination. "Let's see how long you can keep up!"
Before I could respond, Tengen dashed forward, his dual swords spinning in his hands like bladed whirlwinds. "Sound Breathing, Fifth Form: String Performance!" he bellowed, the air reverberating with the deafening crack of his weapons colliding.
The ground beneath my feet erupted as the shockwaves from his technique blasted outward. I leapt gracefully into the air, flipping over Tengen's head and landing behind him. With a swift motion, I disarmed one of his blades, tossing it aside as though it weighed nothing.
"Gotta say, your style is flashy," I said, grinning. "But it's not enough."
"Not enough?!" Tengen growled, his grin faltering. "We'll see about that!"
As I turned my attention back to him, Obanai's serpent-like blade lashed out from the side, the steel glinting ominously. "Serpent Breathing, Third Form: Coil Choke!" he hissed, his voice as sharp as his attack.
His blade moved unpredictably, slithering toward me like a living snake. I dodged the first strike with ease, then caught the blade mid-air with two fingers, holding it in place. Obanai's mismatched eyes widened in shock.
"You rely on the unpredictability of your technique," I said calmly, "but if someone can predict the motion of your blade, it becomes useless." With a flick of my wrist, I sent the blade recoiling back toward him.
Obanai recovered quickly, but the disbelief on his face was clear.
Gyomei attacked again, this time swinging his flail and axe in tandem. The sheer weight of his strikes sent waves of force rippling toward me. "Stone Breathing, Fifth Form: Arcs of Justice!" he intoned, his deep voice reverberating like a prayer.
Massive arcs of energy cleaved through the air, each one powerful enough to crush stone. I dodged the first, sidestepped the second, and caught the third with my bare hand. The force of Gyomei's attack rippled through the clearing, but I remained unmoving, the edge of his axe resting harmlessly in my grasp.
"You are truly strong," I said, meeting Gyomei's blind gaze. "But strength alone won't be enough to defeat me."
Gyomei's expression remained calm, though his grip on his weapon tightened. "I see that now," he rumbled, his prayer beads clicking softly as he stepped back.
Rengoku roared back into the fray, his flames roaring brighter than before. "Flame Breathing, Ninth Form: Rengoku!" he shouted, charging forward with blinding speed. His blade burned like the sun itself, cutting through the air with devastating force.
This time, I didn't move. I stood my ground as the blazing attack came toward me, allowing Rengoku's blade to come within inches of my chest. With a single finger, I stopped the attack mid-swing. The sheer force of his technique caused a shockwave to ripple outward, sending debris flying, but I remained untouched.
Rengoku stared in disbelief as his blade trembled against my finger. "Impossible..."
"It's not impossible," I said calmly. "You're skilled, but the gap between us is... considerable."
Tengen took advantage of the distraction, flanking me with a loud battle cry. "Sound Breathing, Fourth Form: Constant Resounding Slashes!" he shouted, his remaining blade spinning furiously. The technique created a whirlwind of noise and steel, threatening to consume me in its chaos.
With a wave of my hand, the air around me shifted, disrupting the momentum of his attack. Tengen stumbled back, his blade dropping to his side as he panted heavily.
"Not bad," I said, my tone light. "You've got energy. I'll give you that."
The remaining Hashira exchanged glances, their expressions a mixture of frustration, awe, and determination.
"This is futile," Gyomei said, lowering his weapon once more. "His strength is far beyond ours. To continue is to invite unnecessary defeat."
Rengoku, though clearly exhausted, nodded reluctantly. "Gyomei is right. Even with all of us attacking together, we've made no progress."
Tengen groaned, sheathing his remaining blade. "Fine, fine. I'll admit it. You've got the flair and the skill. Guess I'll have to give you some credit."
Obanai said nothing, though his mismatched eyes lingered on me with a calculating look.
I dusted off my sleeves, stepping back toward the shade of the tree I'd been resting under earlier. "Well, that was fun," I said with a grin. "I hope this clears up any doubts you have about me."
