PAMPERED BY MY THREE BROTHERS: THE RETURN OF THE NEGLECTED HEIRESS-Chapter 1788: A bet of a lifetime
Chapter 1788: A bet of a lifetime
When the old lady slapped Penny’s shoulder once more, she huffed sharply and looked at Penny’s face with displeasure. She shook her head in disappointment, then glanced at the two men behind the young lady.
"Kids these days..." she grumbled, shaking her head again. "Are you going to the mansion?"
No one answered as Penny was busy rubbing her shoulder.
"Tch." The old lady muttered. "Forget it. No one’s in there — just come inside for a while. It’s dangerous outside. Children these days surely don’t know danger."
As the old lady grumbled, she grabbed Penny’s shoulder and dragged her back into the hut. Before they got in, she stopped and looked back at Shawn and Slater.
"Forget it," the grandma huffed. "Two ladies with two men together in one place is scandalous. You go in, young lady. Don’t make me scold you again."
Penny frowned as she was pushed to the door, dragging herself back inside like a child. Following behind her was the short old lady.
Meanwhile, Slater and Shawn gazed at them with twisted expressions.
"Scan — scandalous?" Slater muttered in disbelief.
Forget about that, but did the granny actually say two ladies and two men together? How was that scandalous when the other lady was old enough to be their great-grandmother?!
"I don’t think she should lower her guard like that," Shawn snapped out of it, shooting Slater a look.
Slater was slightly irritated, giving Shawn a look that told the latter who was the cause of this irritation.
"She’s already inside," he said, keeping his rifle strapped around him, though his hand never left it. "Damn it, Penny."
Slater clicked his tongue. "This is not the time for this."
But even then, Slater was already marching inside. As for Shawn, his mouth opened and closed. They had already idled, wasting their time because they had to. But now?
"Miss Penny," he whispered, looking around cautiously before following them.
Before Shawn could go in, he lingered outside just to make sure this wasn’t a setup. But then again, everyone at this point probably knew Penny was dead. And Jonathan wouldn’t have seen this coming. With that thought in mind, Shawn eventually walked inside the hut.
Once Shawn walked in, he caught the granny holding an old lamp and placing it on the table. Slater was just beside the window, still alert despite being here. Penny sat at the small table, cupping her face with a smile.
"Why are these two in here?" the granny grumbled as she sat down across from Penny, not pleased to have the two men around. "This place had been dangerous. How could you three wander around this area, huh?"
"Granny, don’t be angry," Penny maintained a smile until her eyes squinted. "They’re not my lovers; I’m married."
The grandma shot Penny a disbelieving look. "You’re married and wandering with two men who are not your husband in the middle of the night?"
"That one is my brother," Penny pointed at Slater. "And then the other one... hmm... I’m still reconsidering his role in my life, but for now, he’s my slave." fгeewebnovёl.com
Penny glanced at Shawn. "Let’s show it to her. Bark."
"..."
"See?" She fluttered her eyelashes at the granny. "His bark is still not good since he only whimpers."
"This young lady..." the granny clicked her tongue. "Are you messing with me, young lady!?"
"Hehe. I’m just trying to spread some positivity to you, Grandma."
"Positivity —" the granny touched her nape, looking at this young lady in disbelief.
Meanwhile, Shawn and Slater just looked at Penny with judgment. Until now, they had no idea why Penny had decided to entertain the grandma despite being in a hurry.
"Granny, don’t you have some kind of warm milk to offer to your guest?" Penny pouted. "I’m a bit hungry. Well, I am hungry because I hadn’t had dinner thanks to a certain someone."
And that certain someone, Shawn, lowered his head slightly.
"Young lady, I already let you in here to keep you safe," said the granny. "Why are you looking for warm milk? Do you see anything in here where I could’ve stored some milk?"
"Well, mostly, grandmothers living in isolation offer milk." Penny rubbed her chin and sighed. "If not that, they’re witches."
She then perked up and cleared her throat. "By the way, Grandma, do you know what’s happening here? There are a lot of people on this island, and you’re right, it’s quite scary."
"Everyone knows what’s going on on this island," the granny frowned.
"Yeah?" Penny raised her brows. "Then, what’s going on? I’m not a local here, by the way. As you can see, those two are armed."
"Are you?"
Penny paused at the granny’s response before she smiled. "Of course."
"Young lady, weapons are crafted to protect oneself or an entire nation," the granny stressed. "If you are armed, you should use it to protect yourself."
"Are you saying I should have raised a gun at an old lady when my brother and my slave are already doing that?"
"Complacency is a disease that has killed many powerful figures," the granny returned. "No one is talking about it, but it’s just as fatal as any other incurable disease."
Penny pressed her lips into a thin line and nodded. After a second, her smile stretched from ear to ear until her eyes were squinting.
"I know!" she intoned. "That’s why I’m leaning on that to get out of here in one piece."
Her response made the granny raise her brows, while Shawn and Slater eyed her curiously. However, Penny just maintained her smile and kept her eyes locked on the granny.
"Granny, everyone in here was racing over one thing. Perhaps, others already think the race is over," Penny continued, her smile fading as she leaned closer to the table. "Say, Granny, do you want to make a bet with me?"
The granny furrowed her brows. "Young lady, what are you talking about now?"
"Let’s bet on who gets the Shadow Order first," Penny remarked, raising a finger. "The person who wins will get to keep the code, and the one who loses..."
She paused, the corner of her eyes sharpening as the sides of her mouth curled up. "... will have to die."
"Miss Penny, what are you —" Shawn’s remarks halted when the granny suddenly laughed.
"Hah!" the granny chuckled, looking at Penny in amusement. "Young lady, you are surely brave!"
"I am not that brave, Madam," Penny offered her a smile. "However, before the head of the Shadow Order of the Zorken Family’s promise, I cannot just let the chance slide. You can say I’m an opportunist."
The granny nodded in understanding, keeping her attention on Penny. "Very well. By the looks of it, you’re here to claim the code and make the oath."
"Nope." Penny shook her head. "I do have the code and understand it, but I’m not going to claim it."
"And why is that?" Interest quickly laced the granny’s voice.
"Because if I did, I’d have to kill you," Penny answered. "I don’t want to kill you, and I haven’t asked my dad if I can live in secrecy for the rest of my life."
She smiled and added, "I love my life, Granny. It’s not worth the code, the Zorken Family, or the Shadow Order."
"And yet, here you are, betting your life on it."
"Because it’s worth my family and my people’s lives." Penny shrugged. "So? Are we betting?"
The granny remained quiet and studied Penny. "I’m betting on Nathalie Zorken."
"Atlas Bennet," Penny replied right away. "Remember that name. He once asked me to murder him and had been thinking of a way I could do it without getting caught, but I just found out how to murder him without killing him and get away with it."
Penny nodded at her. "He’s gonna win not just the Shadow Order, but the Zorken Family as well. I’m putting my life in his hands, and even bet that he would change this order once he gets his hands on it."
