Chapter 1828: Only the Law of Survival Understands

A small group of soldiers already awaited Nathalie and Gilbert outside her room. Together, they quickly headed to the courtyard, where a helicopter was prepared for Nathalie.

The sound of gunfire grew louder as they rushed to their destination.

Just as Butler Gilbert had warned, their enemies had infiltrated the mansion. They’d barely left the room when they had their first confrontation. A few of her men fell, but they managed to take down the immediate threat.

Without stopping, the remaining group carried on.

That encounter wasn’t isolated; if anything, it snowballed.

More gunfire, more encounters, more problems, more deaths.

Naturally, the group had to change course to reach their objective. What should have been a mere five-minute trip stretched far longer than intended.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Nathalie and Butler Gilbert dove behind a wall as more enemies appeared at the other end of the hallway. The strong scent of sulfur stung their nostrils as bullets continuously struck their cover.

"How... how did this all happen?" she breathed, her voice shaking. She glared at her butler, who was more focused on their survival.

At this point, only three of them remained: Nathalie, Gilbert, and their last soldier. This grim reality highlighted just how deeply the enemies had penetrated the mansion.

BANG—

Butler Gilbert peeked out and opened fire, hitting the person shooting at them. Another followed, which he also shot down without a second’s hesitation. Without thinking twice, he grabbed Nathalie’s arm.

"Madam, let’s go!" he shouted, and without waiting for her response, he dragged her with him.

Nathalie clenched her teeth and matched his pace. Behind them was their only remaining soldier, who soon would also fall.

BANG!

Both Nathalie and Butler Gilbert stopped dead as they heard a gunshot. They looked back, and without thinking twice, Nathalie opened fire at the person several steps behind them.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

But even when the man fell, she kept pulling the trigger. By his civilian clothes, she knew he was from the Shadow Order. It was a clear tell.

"I’ll kill you," she mumbled, emptying her gun at him. "I’ll kill all of you."

Butler Gilbert then grabbed her arm. "Madam," he called, but Nathalie still pulled the trigger until only the clang of an empty chamber was heard. "Madam."

"I’m going to kill all of them, Gilbert," she breathed out, finally stopping her firing.

She slowly turned her head and met his eyes, unblinking as they burned. "Not just them, but every single one of their loved ones and friends. Even just those who simply knew them—I’ll kill all of them."

For all the decades she had been in this war, it had almost lost all its meaning. After all, all she wanted in the beginning was to prove her worth and to end her sisters as retribution for her father’s betrayal.

However, things just kept piling up, one after another, and she ended up deciding to create her own empire. Yet, everyone was giving her a hard time.

Couldn’t they all just drop dead?

Butler Gilbert nodded in understanding, knowing that the madam meant every word. If Nathalie came out of here alive, every single person who participated in tonight’s battle would fall: their families, friends, and perhaps even the people who just knew them.

"I’ll make it all happen, Madam," he said, squeezing her arm tighter. "But for now, we have to make sure you leave this place."

Another moment of silence fell between them as they held each other’s eyes. Butler Gilbert nodded slightly, his eyes burning with determination and promise. Hers? Pure rage.

After another breath, Nathalie dropped her hand and tossed her pistol away. She walked to her fallen soldier and pulled his rifle, facing him again.

"Let’s go," she huffed, more determined to retreat for now.

He didn’t say anything in return, but he nodded. With that, the two continued, fighting their way out, taking down anyone in their path—something they were both too familiar with. After all, ever since Nathalie was dragged into the war her father created, Butler Gilbert had always been by her side.

They had taken down all the biggest threats in their way. They even had to take down those they considered friends who had chosen to side with their enemies.

For others, they were nothing but monsters in human skin.

But for them? For Butler Gilbert and Nathalie? This was their survival.

They weren’t right in the eyes of the law—be it heaven’s law or the law of man. However, they were right in the law of survival. They did what they must, even if it meant becoming the devils they were.

So, what was so wrong with that?

If there was anyone to blame, that would be the late Mr. Zorken. He was the one who started it, and they simply wanted to finish it.

"Madam, this way! We’re here!" Butler Gilbert shouted and pulled her forward, entering the dirty kitchen.

Nathalie quickly rushed to the door, and both of them jumped out. Right there, in that small lot outside, a chopper was ready to take off. And so, their feet moved faster. At the same time, figures appeared in their peripheral vision.

"Stop her!"

"Stop them!"

Shots were quickly fired while a few soldiers from inside had already jumped out, covering for them. With their help, Nathalie and Butler Gilbert reached the chopper.

Nathalie unhesitatingly climbed up while Butler Gilbert pushed her from behind. But as she did so, she heard a familiar voice.

"Nathalie!"

She froze mid-climb, looking back at the source of the shout. There, she saw Zoren, standing by the open door where they had come from. Her eyes dilated because his rifle was already pointing at them.

"Zoren," she whispered through gritted teeth. "...you bastard."

Just as those words rolled off her tongue, Zoren pulled the trigger, aiming straight at her.

BANG!

Time slowed for her as she could almost see the bullet spin in the air, shooting directly at her. She held her breath, frozen on the spot.

’Is this where my life ends?’ she wondered to herself. ’Decades-long war... and it ends... tonight?’
