Path of Medicine With a System-Chapter 292: Police car with a loudspeaker
Zhang Fan hadn’t expected that Lu Shuyan really would be quite skilled at operating a motorcycle. She was able to weave in and out of the traffic at quite a high speed. A bit more than 10 minutes later, Lu Shuyan successfully arrived at the hand and foot surgery hospital with Zhang Fan.
Zhang Fan jumped off the motorcycle. He didn’t have the time to talk to Lu Shuyan right now. He could only tell her, “Thank you, I’ll treat you to a meal sometime!” He then ran right into his hospital. Lu Shuyan was originally going to leave, but then she noticed that the doctors in this hospital seemed to be really polite to him, which piqued her curiosity.
Lu Shuyan looked around and found a place to park her motorcycle that it wouldn’t be in the way. She took off her motorcycle helmet and held it as she slowly walked into Zhang Fan’s hospital.
Zhang Fan’s hospital had completely changed under Batu’s management. It now seemed really proper. The clean white walls of his hospital were covered with enlarged pictures of various hand and foot injuries and what to pay attention to.
Types of injuries, how to treat them, postoperative recovery situations, and so on were all detailed on the walls. There was also a lot of text on the history of hand and foot surgery in Chasu City.
Batu had found a professional reporter and paid him handsomely to write all this. The reporter was a skilled writer who made it sound like Chasu City’s streets would be filled with people who lacked either a hand or a foot if it wasn’t for Zhang Fan’s hand and foot surgery hospital.
Although this was a bit of an exaggeration, Zhang Fan’s hand and foot surgery hospital had indeed accomplished quite a lot. Before this hand and foot surgery hospital started out as Ma Wentao’s hospital, everyone in the area around Chasu City would only have two very clear choices about a cut off limb. They could either try and go to Raptor City for treatment, or they could choose amputation! However, Raptor City was about 750 kilometers away, and time was absolutely critical when it came to limb replantation surgery!
Lu Shuyan slowly looked over the medical cases listed on the walls, while Zhang Fan had long since run into the doctors’ work area. “What’s going on?”
By now, Li Liang, Song Bing, and the other doctors working at Zhang Fan’s hospital had already gained a lot of skill in hand and foot surgery. They wouldn’t need to call him for any ordinary surgery anymore.
Although Zhang Fan would still come here to grind surgical experience whenever he had the time, he was receiving a lot fewer emergency surgery phone calls from them than before.
“The patient is a four-year-old boy. An adult accidentally cut off the boy’s right hand at the wrist while trying to cut a cow bone. Since the patient is such a young child, and Li Liang and the others have yet to perform limb replantation surgery on young children before, I called you.”
Chen Qifa no longer had to worry about hospital administration now that Batu was here. Chen Qifa now only focused on surgeries. Although Chen Qifa wasn’t as skilled as Zhang Fan, he had still worked as a surgeon for a few decades already. Chen Qifa had good judgement regarding surgeries!
He was highly accurate at assessing which surgeries the doctors here were capable of doing, and which surgeries would require contacting Zhang Fan!
“Right!” Zhang Fan nodded. He then said, “Has the necessary medical equipment been prepared for me already?”
“Yes!”
“Alright. Let’s go out and receive the patient.” Zhang Fan then led the doctors and nurses to his hospital’s entrance. Zhang Fan walked at the very forefront and in the center. Everyone was silent except for the sound of footsteps as they swiftly went over to the entrance. A gurney and medical equipment had already been prepared.
They all silently waited for the patient’s arrival!
“Zhang Fan? This hospital? Oh!” Lu Shuyan secretly left Zhang Fan’s hospital, feeling like she had discovered something.
Fatigue would always come after excitement in anything. Lu Shuyan’s adrenaline had been elevated due to Zhang Fan urging her to come here for an emergency surgery. Now, she felt as if she had discovered a secret of Zhang Fan’s that wasn’t really a secret. She was a little tired now after her adrenaline faded. She slowly rode her motorcycle towards her home.
Zhang Fan kept looking towards the road. Right now, it would be impossible to make him focus on anything other than the patient.
Pediatric surgery, especially pediatric orthopedic surgery, was a type of independent surgery category of its own. Normally, general surgery and heart surgery for young children could be treated by the regular general surgery department and cardiothoracic surgery department.
However, pediatric orthopedic surgery couldn’t be treated by an ordinary orthopedic surgery department. Adult bones were already grown and complete, foundationally changing the quality of the bone.
Meanwhile, pediatric orthopedic surgery was quite complex. Children, especially really young children, were still developing quite rapidly. Their bone injuries would be highly difficult to deal with.
If you simply believed that children’s bones were just a smaller version of adult bones, then you would be massively mistaken. The pediatric orthopedic surgeon would need to consider the joint’s epiphysis, the injury’s potential consequences on future development, and so on. Meanwhile, an orthopedic surgeon working on an adult patient would only need to consider the bone’s present condition.
If a simple and basic orthopedic surgery was performed on a child using the same method as on an adult, maybe the surgeon would think that they had done a good job by setting everything back in proper position quite perfectly. However, the end result of such a way of thinking would be that the child’s bones would become distorted six months later.
Why was this? It would be due to the doctor not considering the child’s future bone development. Children’s bones were still developing, which made pediatric orthopedic surgery far more difficult than orthopedic surgery for adults!
A simple bone fracture was quite easy to analyze in an adult patient with only an X-ray. However, things wouldn’t be the same for a bone fracture in a child. Only a veteran orthopedic surgeon would be able to analyze things.
The separated bone, the bone which hadn’t developed fully in hardness yet, and whether there really was a fracture or not would all be really difficult to determine on a child’s X-ray. An inexperienced doctor would be really confused by a child’s X-ray!
Chen Qifa’s decision to call Zhang Fan was really important. If this was a hand reattachment for an adult, with Li Liang and the other doctors’ current skill level, it wouldn’t be a problem at all. If Zhang Fan worked on such a surgery, the only difference would be the length of the surgery and that he would cause less damage to the patient in the end.
However, there would be quite a large difference if Li Liang and the other doctors attempted to work on a young child’s injury. It would likely affect that child for the rest of his life. This boy’s life had just begun. He was still at the very beginning of his growth. Chen Qifa didn’t want the surgery to affect the boy for the rest of his life with potential bone distortion!
The police cars could now be seen in the distance, driving down the road. There had been four police cars to begin with, and now one more police car with a loudspeaker had joined them!
The police cars’ lights and sirens that kept flashing were the best warning to all bystanders and cars to please get out of the way!
Most people who saw a special vehicle like an ambulance, police car, or fire truck would automatically get out of the way or park on the side of the road.
However, there were always a few people who felt like they were the ruler of the world while driving in a car. They would feel like the road belonged to them, so why should they have to make way?
That was why having a loudspeaker on the police car was so important. This would be a race against time. The faster they were, the better the chance that the boy Wang Congcong could still have a happy future.
Zhang Fan’s hospital’s personnel had long since been waiting at the entrance. The police cars in the distance soon arrived. The police cars finally stopped when the Hyundai being escorted by the police cars arrived at the hospital entrance. The police got out of their cars.
The police didn’t mind the blood as they assisted Wang Congcong’s father in carrying his son out of the Hyundai. The young boy was now getting sleepy. This was a sign of shock from blood loss!
“Hurry and lay him on the gurney! Support him well! Keep his injured limb raised up high!” Chen Qifa organized the nurses and younger doctors.
Wang Congcong was placed on the gurney. Zhang Fan saw that the boy’s arm was bloody and showing white bone! The boy’s tiny and tender arm was incredibly swollen.
Li Liang swiftly took the bottle with Wang Congcong’s tiny hand from his mother. This tiny hand was pale, incredibly pale. It seemed just like a rubber doll’s hand. How pitiful!
Tears constantly flowed out of Wang Congcong’s mother’s eyes as she looked at Li Liang with a hopeful expression. She had endless things that she wanted to say to plead with the doctors and nurses in front of her, but she was afraid that it would waste time if she said anything, so she could only bite down hard on her lips and do her best to withstand everything as much as she could! Her lips started bleeding because of how much force she was biting with!
Zhang Fan relaxed himself ever so slightly when he saw the boy’s injury. It was a slice injury, and the boy’s hand had also been preserved properly, along with the injury being relatively recent. “Immediately bring him to the operating room! Prepare for surgery. Prepare blood and open the vein channels to correct his shock! Hurry! Old Chen, you prepare the surgery agreement paperwork and inform the patient’s family members about his condition.”
“Okay!”
Zhang Fan didn’t have the time to console the patient’s family. The more time passed after a limb was cut off, the more toxins that the cut off limb’s cells would produce. This was why hospitals would no longer even attempt limb replantation if too much time passed since the incident, even if it was a clean slice injury.
These toxins were quite deadly!
