Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 186 Obstructions (2)
"Fu*k, they are persistent! Do they plan on fighting to the last?!" Olivia grumbled loudly as she weaved through dozens of vehicles trying to ram into hers.
In terms of skill and equipment, they had their opponents far outmatched.
Their rental vehicle had reflective armor plating and a decently strong shield generator to ward of enemy fire, and Havanna and Rorson were packing weapons that were easily ten times better than the obviously cheap laser pistols the thugs attacking them possessed.
As for Olivia, she could easily outmaneuver every one of their attackers, but their sheer numbers were a problem.
Already Havanna and Rorson had taken down fifteen of the enemy's vehicles, and while some had survived the ensuing crash to the ground, most had ended up dying or were severely injured and well on their way to an early grave.
This did not seem to deter their comrades one bit, and the gang that had been incited to attack them had thrown caution to the wind and were fervently trying to ram their vehicle.
Olivia was doing her best to avoid this outcome, but with over thirty enemies remaining, she was having a hard time dodging every strike.
Already she had taken several glancing blows that ate away at their vehicle's shields and threw off her driving.
Havanna and Rorson were doing their best to take down the thugs. Every shot they fired was precise and did heavy damage if not outright disabling their vehicles.
However, unlike at the beginning of the battle, which had consisted of a long-range firefight, they were now embroiled in what was essentially a close-range brawl with their vehicles.
Lining up shots took longer, and Olivia's rapid movements to avoid being rammed made it difficult to hit specific areas on the enemy vehicles.
"Are communications still jammed?" Rorson asked as he fired another burst of lasers from his modified prosthetic arm.
"Obviously! Nothing is getting through. These guys might be stupid, but they aren't complete idiots. They're jamming any outgoing signal I try to send." Havanna replied, her voice filled with frustration.
When outnumbered, the natural thing to do was to call for backup. Seeing as how they were being illegally attacked, one transmission to Azade's Defenders of the Peace and they would have a small army coming to help them.
Of course, the enemy knew this and would do everything in their power to stop that outcome from occurring. It would only take a few reinforcements to fully tip the favor of the battle in Olivia's, Havanna's, and Rorson's favor. The only thing the hooligans attacking them had going for them was their greater numbers after all.
Still, even if they could not contact anyone else, it was only a matter of time before the authorities showed up. It would be impossible for them not to detect such an intense battle with lasers flying all over the place.
That made this a battle of attrition. If Olivia and her team could hold out until backup arrived, they would win. While the gang of thugs needed to take them out before the authorities showed up and make their escape. Or at least, that would be the case if things stayed as they were.
"Both of you get ready to bail. This vehicle is not going to last much longer."
Olivia's order caught her two subordinates off-guard, and Havanna started complaining immediately that she was not in any way equipped for something like that. Her skillset mostly revolved around firing her gun and she lacked the specific gear needed to accomplish what Olivia was planning
"Fine, Rorson, you take care of Havanna as well. I'll secure us a new ride."
Havanna continued to protest, but her shouting went on deaf ears.
Olivia glanced up at her target. The largest vehicle that these thugs had and most likely where their leader was.
Unlike the lower ranking members that were swarming Olivia and trying crash into her, this single vehicle floated above them and rained down blasts of laser fire.
"I bet you think that you're safe in that loft position above us." Olivia said with a sneer.
When the chance presented itself, she pulled down hard on the controls of her vehicle and sent it ascending at the sharpest angle it could handle.
The nose pointed straight into the air, and the engine screamed in protest form the strain.
Several of the enemies that had been trying to ram them crashed into each other, and the ones that avoided friendly collisions took several seconds to change their courses and were late in chasing after Olivia, Havanna, and Rorson.
Naturally, the vehicle looming above fired at them relentlessly, and the rental Olivia was driving had parts blasted off and it was beginning to smoke.
Nevertheless, she trusted that its durability would hold out long enough and continued to charge. If the vehicle failed, then she would just need to resort to Plan B. Which was far more daring than even what she was doing now.
To the thugs watching, it would seem that Olivia had gone mad as death set in and decided to take out their boss as a last desperate suicide charge.
Certainly, if she rammed their lead vehicle from below at such a high speed, it would spell disaster.
Fortunately, such a straightforward maneuver was easy enough to evade.
All they needed to do was move to the side and let Olivia fly harmlessly by them.
Except, that was exactly what Olivia wanted to happen.
The moment that they were above the thug's lead vehicle, she kicked open the rental's door and jumped out.
At the same time, Rorson grabbed ahold of Havanna who was wearing a disgruntled expression and followed his captain's lead.
The three of them were now in a free fall and heading in the direction of their opponent's vehicle.
Not a second later, their rental's propulsion device reached its limit and lost all of its forward momentum. Gravity began to drag it back down to the surface, and a fire broke out in the engine. When it finally impacted the ground below, it was in a fiery explosion.
As she fell, Olivia pulled out her hard light spear and activated it.
This was her cherished weapon and something that had been by her side since before she started working as a mercenary.
"It's been a long time since I could wield you of my own volition." Olivia muttered, a somber smile forming on her face.
After being disgracefully captured and enslaved by Iniquus, she had been forced to do all manner of atrocities at his command.
It had been sickening, and eventually she had learned to completely bottle up her emotions and becoming a killing machine that only followed orders.
But everything was different now. She had been rescued by Avery and Ezra. Now she had her life back and could use her strength as she wished.
Lasers flew all around her as she fell, yet Olivia remained undaunted. Merley flicking her weapon to deflect any shots that would hit her.
Soon she was right on top of the vehicle and jabbed her spear into its side to affix herself to it.
With superhuman abilities, she pulled herself into one of the open doors where the gang members had been stationed as gunners.
Once inside, the thugs tried to rush and restrain her. Except she could not be stopped by amateurs like them that only knew how to gang up on those weaker than themselves.
Rapidly her spear moved, and with every flourish, she cut down an enemy.
Soon, the boss of this gang got up from his seat at the front of the vehicle and lumbered towards Olivia.
He was a big man, and it was clear that he had received some cybernetic enchantments. Most likely from an unlicensed augmenter judging by the messy job and clearly second rate mechanical parts sticking out of his body.
"You made a huge mistake trespassing on my ride, lady. I'm going to crush all of your limbs and then make you wish you were dead." The man said with a menacing tone of voice.
Yet, Olivia could only look at him pitifully. While he might have seemed intimidating to the average person, he just seemed sad to her. A big fish in a small pond that had no idea what he was involved in.
As the thugs' boss raised his arms above his head and prepared to attack, Rorson and Havanna finally entered the vehicle as well.
Rorson's prosthetic arm had shot out an extended like a grappling hook and reeled them in. And the instant that their feet touched down, Havanna fired at the man who was obviously their enemy.
Before even being able to make a move, the gang's boss had his kneecaps blown out and fell to the floor as his legs could no longer support him.
His personal shield generator had tried to block Havanna's blasts, but the cheap four generations old piece of equipment had been unable to stand up to the intensity of the custom laser rifle.
"Don't think that this will be enough to stop me!" The man roared as he tried to force himself up.
Instead of blood, the holes in his legs were leaking oil and a mechanical whirling sound could be heard as he pushed his body to move.
Clearly, he had replaced parts of himself fully with machines. Probably to the point that he could even be considered a cyborg.
It had been done sloppily through, and his increased physical might was hardly a problem for Olivia, Havanna, and Rorson.
"Yeah, I think that's enough from you. It's nighty night time." Olivia said mockingly as she sliced up his arms so that the man could no longer move and then struck him on the head hard enough to render him unconscious.
