Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 188 Everything Coming Together as Planned
"Are things set up as we discussed, Fargus?"
"They are ma'am. There were some minor hiccups and a small group of intrusive rats that were snooping around, but they have been dealt with." Fargus said, holding out a tablet that was showing a news story from a few days ago.
It had been all over Azade.
A special investigator for the chancellor had been killed in a brutal attack by a gang of known thugs.
Photos of the violent scene were displayed in the article, and the rental vehicle that the special investigator and her two assistants had been using was a burnt-out wreck.
As for the gang, most of them ended up being killed in a firefight with Azade's Defenders of the Peace, but the leader and a few of his cronies had managed to get away.
That leader was the one that Fargus had indirectly contacted through several middlemen, one of which had already been silenced to prevent the connection from being traced back.
He had received confirmation photos of Olivia's, Havanna's, and Rorson's deaths just as he wanted.
Then the news coverage that came later served as more proof. The special investigator that was getting a bit too close to figuring things out had been silenced, and the incident had served as a good distraction from what Fargus had actually been setting in motion.
"We also finally struck a blow against that traitorous little Baccigan. Those three were part of those damnable mercenaries he joined. Now Grito knows that he and his little friends aren't untouchable." Fargus' mistress said, her lips twisted up into truly devilish smile.
Overall, it was a good victory for them, but there were still a few complications.
They doubted that anything important had been put together from the minor incidents that were being investigated. Still, it was impossible to perfectly cover their tracks so some clues might have been discovered.
There was the chancellor's involvement as well. It was certainly disconcerting that Azade's highest authority was sticking her nose into this matter. She was a crafty and powerful enemy to have.
When Fargus brought this up, his boss frowned and let out a low grumble. She had a grudging respect for Regina and had even supported her bid for becoming chancellor.
Her greater urbanization initiatives were good for business, and as a senator herself, she had been doing quite well thanks to the current administration.
"This is a matter we can't do much about now. If she continues to be a problem, I'll have to take some drastic measures. In the worst case, I may have to become chancellor myself."
She wanted to avoid such an outcome, if possible, as it would limit her ability to act behind the scenes and bring far more responsibility than merely being a senator. Sometimes having too much power was stifling.
"However, that is a something to be dealt with later. For now, we must attend the shame of a trial I'm being forced into. The Alliance hardly has any reason to be suspicious, and their only real evidence is the word of that traitor. To think that they would bring in a senator like me in with such a flimsy case." She sighed.
Had it been Azade's judicial system going after her, she could have exerted her authority more, but it was the Alliance Police that had moved against her. They had discovered a single bit of circumstantial evidence and latched onto it.
Now they had Grito though, and his testimony which would be done under a truth serum that made it impossible to lie and would be accepted as concrete proof of several individuals' involvement with the Odium Syndicate.
There was also talk of him possessing a data drive with records of the organization's deals, but if such a thing existed, it had not yet been presented to the Alliance Police.
"Well, this will all be dealt with soon. After today, the case will fall apart without its star witness, and there will be far too much else for the Alliance and Azade to worry about." Fargus said, his demeanor completely calm, despite the destruction and chaos that was about to occur all to save his mistress from being convicted.
With the time of the trial getting closer, the two of them brought their chat to an end and prepared to leave.
The senator put on a striking golden dress that was more in line for a classy party rather than a criminal proceeding.
Nevertheless, her beaty was one of her weapons, and she was perfectly fine looking alluring if it helped her to avoid the punishment she rightfully deserved for betraying her world and the Dramid Alliance.
Out front of her mansion was a large, opulent vehicle waiting to take her to the courthouse where the trial was to be held. She was not going to go discreetly and wanted to flaunt her power and confidence.
It did not take long before they reached their destination, and she could not help smiling with what she saw.
The entire courthouse and surrounding areas were filled to the brim with protestors. All of them here to condemn the arrest of Leland Glas. A popular figure among many and the perfect scapegoat to rile the people up.
Everything against the man had been fabricated by Fargus. He was naturally completely uninvolved in the destitution of one of the new cities currently under construction all over Azade. But his public condemnation of the project as well as the growing movement around him was enough to make him a suspect.
With a little fabricated evidence and wielding a bit of his mistress' influence, Fargus had gotten suspicions directed at the man.
Now on the exact same day, and at the same courthouse, his mistress' trial and Leland Glas' were set to begin.
"I'm assuming that our agents are already among the crowd?"
"Yes, they've been working from the start. Honestly, I'm impressed at how efficiently they've gathered this mob. And it seems that they are just one push away from being worked up into a frenzy." Fargus said.
The senator he served nodded her head in approval. Everything was going as expected.
Once they had pulled into the courthouse's garage, several Alliance Police officers of the court came by to escort them.
While this was Azade's Superior Court, for today, a section of it had been commandeered by the Dramid Alliance on account of their own courthouse having been recently attacked.
"Ah, Senator Fena, you've finally arrived. You don't have a thing to worry about. I'll make sure that this case against you is dropped and buried."
A middle-aged man wear a well-tailored suit approached Fargus and Senator Fena as they neared the room the trial would be in.
He was her lead counselor and would be representing her during the proceedings.
Standing behind the man was over a dozen other advocates that Fargus had hired for this trial. Not that he planned on needing their expertise to begin with. As things were going, this trial would not last long and no verdict would ever be made.
With Fargus and her team of lawyers in tow, Senator Fena entered the courtroom and took her place on the defendants' side.
There were other people already in the same area. Some were coconspirators Senator Fena already knew and had worked with before, while others were unfamiliar to her.
Nevertheless, all of them were here to be tried for the same crimes.
"This looks more like a conference rather than a trial." Senator Fena said mockingly.
While there were fourteen defendants, each of them held positions of power and wealth, and had their own large teams of counselors with them. They were not going to go down without a fight.
Soon it was finally time for the trial to begin, and the judge that would be overseeing the case entered and took their place at the front of the room.
Both Fargus and Senator Fena had to restrain themselves from frowning as they watched the woman take her seat.
Judge Vertueuse, an uncompromising and principled woman. No matter what means Senator Fena and her allies attempted to get the judge on their side, she had not budged an inch.
Finding some sort of scandal to use as blackmail had not amounted to anything either. The woman was absolutely dedicated to her position.
'Well, she'll be dying today as well.' Senator Fena thought as the proceedings began.
The beginning of the trail was dull and moved at a snail's pace.
With the number of defendants and their counselors, everything was taking quite a bit of time to get through.
Lesser witness that really did not know much if anything consequential came first. It was obvious what the prosecution was trying to do. Build up a solid foundation with the circumstantial evidence that led to the investigation in the first place and then finish things off with their star witness.
Naturally, the Dramid Alliance prosecutor thought that they had everything under control. But the moment that Grito made his appearance, Senator Fena had Fargus commence the chaos they had painstakingly planned
