Avery piloted the Dauntless through a dense asteroid field as he made his way towards the coordinates that Ezra had given him.

They were still in the Yuson system, but far enough away from any space stations or mining operations that their battle would not attract unwanted attention.

"I wonder how he found this spot?" Kasandra said, looking out at the rocks of varying sizes floating by.

"It wasn’t on the map of the system I had downloaded, but when I searched a bit deeper for it, I found some old records from when companies were first prospecting the system. Apparently almost none of these asteroids have any valuable metals or minerals in them. Which is why no one really cares that it exists, and they won’t be bothered if a few of them blow up." Avery replied.

Truthfully, it was the perfect place for a duel between small class vessels. Not only would they need to worry about themselves, but also the obstacles floating all around them.

A mercenary’s typical prey was space pirates, and they almost always operated in areas similar to this that made it difficult for the Alliance Police’s large vessels to approach. Meaning that this battle between Avery and Ezra would also serve as excellent practice for the future. Especially if they ran into the rare pirate that was both exceptionally skilled and possessed a quality vessel.

"There he is. That ship of his really does blend in well with the asteroids. If it weren’t for the sensors, I might have missed him." Kasandra commented.

Ezra’s ship, known as the Specter, had a dark gray coloration that fit its namesake. It really did seem like if one took their eyes off of it for a single moment, that it could disappear.

"Glad to see that you’re on time. Are you ready to get started?"

"Yep. Send me the starting coordinates and we’ll get into position." Avery responded.

A transmission then came in and Kasandra helped navigate Avery a few hundred kilometers away.

"And I just want to ask again, you’re certain that its fine that Kasandra acts as a supporter during the match?"

"Yes, that’s fine. She’s a part of your crew and normally assists you anyway. I see no reason why she would not be able to help you now."

With Ezra approval, Avery nodded his head towards his partner and left her with the job of working the Dauntless’ subsystems. This would allow him to focus fully on flying and shotting.

"We’ve received the countdown. One minute to go."

After receiving a final transmission from Ezra, Kasandra displayed a timer on the Dauntless’ main screen. Today, Avery would either prove himself competent enough for Ezra to join him, or he would become the subordinate of the veteran mercenary.

"Setting generator to maximum output. Charging the weapon systems." Kasandra said as the clock ticked closer to the start of the match.

The instant it hit zero, Avery pushed the thrusters and began flying through the asteroid field as quickly as he could manage.

Soon he had a visual on the Specter and confirmed target lock on it.

With the press of a button, three blasts of red light shot out from the Dauntless’ heavy laser cannons and soared towards Ezra’s ship.

"He’s certainly adept at using those asteroids." Avery grumbled as his shots missed.

Ezra was darting around cover to avoid being hit while closing in. While his weapons were powerful, their effective range was shorter than Avery’s.

Both of them continued to close in on each other in order to bring a swift and decisive end to this dual.

"Seekers incoming!"

Once he was finally close enough, Ezra launched several seeker missiles from the single missile pod sitting on the top of his ship just behind the cockpit.

Of course, Avery already knew he had this weapon equipped and Kasandra immediately deployed flares to give the missiles other heat signatures to lock onto.

Using their momentary shift in concertation, Ezra lined up his primary weapons on the Dauntless and opened fire.

He had two multicannons and two laser blasters. All of which fired at a tremendous rate.

Unlike Avery’s laser cannons that did immense damage with each attack, Ezra’s weapons were more geared towards a consistent barrage that ate away at his opponent’s shields until he broke through and could riddle his targets full of holes.

"The targeting system can’t lock on properly since he’s deployed chaffs and decoy beacons."

"I know. It’s a pain but I’ll have to aim manually."

Ezra was naturally using a lot of the same tricks that Avery had up his sleeve. Both of them had released deceives to meddle with each other’s targeting abilities.

However, Ezra had the clear advantage since he was simply firing far more attacks than Avery was. Even if his shots lacked power in comparison.

Nevertheless, Avery was hardly fazed by any of this. He already knew that this was going to be a tough battle.

Back and forth, the two of them maneuvered around to line up shots on each other and slowly ate away at each other’s shields.

While Avery’s laser cannons hit far less often, each shot was far more impactful.

"He’s charging up the unknown weapon on the bottom of his vessel. Keep your eye out for it." Kasandra warned.

They had an abundance of data on Ezra’s ship from their time fighting together against the energy lifeforms, but there had been one armament he had not used then. Now though, he was getting ready to reveal what his secret weapon could do.

Despite Avery’s best efforts, Ezra eventually lined up a shot at them and fired his hidden ace.

"Wait?! It’ a railgun." Kasandra shouted as an electromagnetically propelled chunk of metal shaped like an arrowhead came flying towards them.

Usually, a small craft would never have such a weapon since it used an obscene amount of energy to fire and required heavy and sizable ammunition.

Yet, it was a lot like Avery’s plasma launchers. A difficult to use, but immensely powerful weapon that could allow even a smaller vessel to deal serious damage to larger ones. Even just a single hit would be strong enough to punch through the Dauntless’ shields.
