Pestilence: Rise Of The Pure Undead-Chapter 642: Careful What You Say, Little Mouth
The people of this realm might look like regular humans at a glance, but that was only true in appearance, not only were they filled to the brim with soul energy, it also permeated every single one of their organs, giving an ethereal quality to everything, their blood was turned blue by this constant exposition, and when spilled, it would quickly evaporate into some sort of soul steam, leaving only a crackling, dried-up liquid behind if was splashed on a surface.
Their innard and other organs would similarly deflate as they leaked the prodigious energy out, leaving behind only crumpled up parts, which were as fragile as paper thoroughly blackened by flames, as for the bones and flesh, they were mostly spared from it, not home to that much of the blueish energy compared to the rest, which gave the impression that these people's insides would flash-decay when killed.
Having noticed it after breaking an innocent bystander's neck, Maliah couldn't help but wonder if the stronger individuals would have more energy permeating their bodies and would thus, completely dry up when slain.
Her curiosity was piqued.
But for now, she just put on her least disturbing facial expression and followed Loimos along, still having a hard time realising that the putrid skeleton who had led murderous campaigns and killed countless with his own hands was the same person as this creepily handsome fellow right there.
What was weirder though, was the fact that he was technically alive in some capacity, everything non-physical about him, such as his mind and soul were dead, but the body was perfectly alive, she could hear his heart beat and blood flow, he was actually breathing.
But each of those natural body functions were so perfectly executed, so calculated that it felt more like Loimos was controlling an automaton rather than an actual body, she guessed that it was the same thing to him.
The two of them arrived before the gates after a little while of walking, the walls surrounding it were truly immense, oversized even, unless they had some giants wandering around, this was all frankly unnecessary, the two people guarding the way in looking especially ridiculous, though, it really was the gate itself that was so, looking like a mouse hole upon the titanic architecture.
Since only Loimos could converse, Maliah just crossed her arms and walked behind the undead, since he had retained his original height and gained quite a bit of width on account of not being bones anymore, the assassin nearly disappeared from view.
"Halt there" spoke one of the two men standing guard.
"Put some more oomph when you say halt" mumbled the other, both were of a rather strong build, the one that had spoken first had bloodshot eyes and dark circles, clearly, he had not caught much sleep recently.
Though, seeing the blue veins pulsating against the white of his sclera was quite the sight.
"You must be here to enroll, right?" the tired guard continued speaking, there really was only one purpose to be here in the first place, but it was strangely common for people to just wander around and end up here anyways.
"Indeed, we are seeking to put our skills to the service of-"
"Yeah, yeah… Sure, that's what everyone says… Just wait here for a moment"
Loimos didn't even have to try, easily passing of as a regular youth seeking to take up arms, in truth, most, if not all of the people that enlisted to fight undeads did it because it was widespread that those who fought and performed well would earn themselves some soul essence, everyone wanted to live longer, to be young forever, or intended to give the essence to someone close to them, such as a parent or the likes.
But obviously, few were upfront about just wanting to get paid some goodies, especially since to the livings of this realm, it was common knowledge that their elite saw, or at least pretended to see, the act of hunting undeads as a sacred rite that preserved the integrity of their world and the continued flourishment of their nation.
One of the guards left and returned after a few minutes.
"Well, you guys are unlucky, there are no expeditions happening right now, you can only show what you can do in a week or so- But you're allowed in" he turned to his fellow guard "Do show them the way to the barracks"
"Sure" the other shrugged, seemed like Loimos and Maliah weren't quite as suspicious-looking as previously assumed, that or they really didn't care who showed as long as they wanted to kill undeads.
Once inside the great city, they were met with what the assassin would call a very disappointing sight, she couldn't sense nearly as many people as she had expected, this place was huge and cluttered with buildings everywhere, but the actual amount of inhabitants was minuscule, in fact, she could spot cobwebs and dust accumulating on the porch of many of those wooden buildings.
The guard was used to this sight and just walked straight grumbling to himself.
"So… You two intend on fighting the restless?" he eventually asked.
"We do" replied Loimos, Maliah could pat herself on the back for staying behind his back as just the tone was enough to make her skin crawl, she really didn't want to see what sort of expressions the undead was possibly making.
Unlike her however, the guard seemed completely fooled.
"Huh… Are you a manifestator?" he asked, not paying any heed to Maliah.
"Yes, I can manifest a sword"
The Death Dealer had no idea whether or not Loimos had actually already learned how to use this way of power, and there were no obvious signs that could tell whether or not that was the case.
But the guard once again gobbled it up without question.
"I see! That's great to hear, there is never a shortage of those, much better than those binder weaklings, they rarely last very long, it's just a waste of resources to let them join, in my opinion…"
"...Though, why are you dragging that deadweight with you? That woman seems to barely have any soul energy, I thought stunted babies were killed off, what's up with her?" Maliah could not understand the words spoken but squinted her eyes nonetheless, feeling that this guy had just insulted her.
No one had ever insulted the assassin to her face and walked away, at best, they had crawled away whilst missing their legs.
"Say, what is over there?" casually asked Loimos.
"Huh? That's just a passage between two unoccupied barracks, there is nothing there"
"Good" and as easily as he breathed, Loimos reached forward and crushed his windpipe before throwing him into the alley.
