Chapter 188 - 188- She wondered

Actually, after this outing, the atmosphere between the two had become much more harmonious. After all, bringing a child out to play inevitably required various forms of communication. Even though Cynthia had resolved not to speak to him, she had no choice but to compromise when it came to matters concerning Olive.

Both of them could sense the improved atmosphere, but neither said it aloud. Albert kept quiet because he was too overjoyed, fearing that once he opened his mouth, he wouldn't be able to hide his smugness. Cynthia, on the other hand, didn't say anything because she was furious with herself for getting along with him so well!

After thinking for a long time, Olive finally declared,

"I want to eat egg rolls!"

Cynthia smiled fondly, her brows arching with affection.

"Sure, shall we go back and make some now?"

"Yes, yes!" Olive nodded vigorously. Egg rolls were her favorite, and just imagining their soft texture made her mouth water.

"What's that?"

Albert, holding Olive, frowned and asked. Olive excitedly waved her hands, trying to mimic the shape of egg rolls, and said in her little voice,

"It's super yummy food!"

Albert couldn't help but laugh. This little girl—her only way to describe food now was to call it "super yummy." She probably thought repeating it several times would better convey just how delicious it was.

Tilting his head, he glanced at the woman who was smiling warmly at Olive, just as he was. Without hesitation, he said,

"Then I want some too!"

Olive clapped her hands in excitement and welcomed him enthusiastically,

"Okay—"

Just as her words fell, they were interrupted by her mother's cold voice.

"Sorry, Mr. Wilson, my cooking skills aren't great. I'm afraid you wouldn't find it to your liking."

"I've eaten it before. What's the big deal?"

After saying this, he carried Olive in his arms and strode towards the parking lot. Cynthia was so taken aback by his retort that she couldn't find a single word to reply. Was this her shooting herself in the foot? She had deliberately suggested going home to avoid him, yet here he was, shamelessly tagging along.

However, what gave her some relief was that Olive fell asleep shortly after getting into the car. Glancing at Olive's peaceful, slumbering face, she tilted her head and softly asked him,

"Mr. Wilson, could you let Olive stay with me tonight? There are some things I need to discuss with her."

Now that Olive had seen her, she wouldn't be so easily convinced to leave her again. Cynthia planned to have a proper conversation with her little girl, believing that Olive would understand and listen.

Olive's greatest strength was her obedience. As long as you explained the reasoning or the pros and cons of a situation, she would usually accept it. Occasionally, she might cry or throw a small tantrum, but a little coaxing would settle her down.

However, her greatest weakness was also her obedience. Because she was so compliant, she rarely had her own ideas or opinions. This kind of personality meant that Olive was destined to grow into a simple, warm-hearted, and down-to-earth young woman.

Albert glanced at Cynthia, a trace of reluctance flickering in his eyes.

"Cynthia, can't you both just stay at my place? You two can share a room. I promise not to disturb you, and I swear I won't act improperly like I did yesterday. Please? As long as I get to see the two of you every day, I'll be happy!"

"Mr. Wilson, please drop me off at my apartment. The address is..."

Cynthia calmly gave him the address, then took out her phone to call Bonnie, asking her to bring over the keys to her apartment. She hadn't seen Bonnie since returning home.

Just as she was about to make the call, her phone suddenly rang. Worried that the ringtone might wake Olive, she hurried to answer it. On the other end, a low male voice came through—it was Quinn.

Cynthia's heart skipped a beat, realizing she hadn't called him yet to let him know she was safe. Yesterday, that man had left her so distracted that she hadn't thought about anything else!

The moment Quinn's voice came through the phone, Cynthia could feel the wave of displeasure radiating from the man beside her. Ignoring him, she lowered her voice and spoke softly to Quinn in Japanese.

"Sorry, Quinn... I—I was a bit tired yesterday and didn't call you. But don't worry, I'm perfectly fine!"

She felt that her explanation sounded weak and unconvincing. There was silence on the other end, and unease and guilt began to creep across Cynthia's face. From the moment she got off the plane yesterday, she had been caught up with that man and hadn't been able to break free since. She was so frustrated that she hadn't even had the mental space to think about other things.

Quinn's voice remained low but carried a hint of sadness.

"It's okay. I figured you'd be busy on your first day, so I didn't call you either. How's Olive?"

Cynthia quickly replied,

"She's doing great! She's asleep right now, though, or I'd let her talk to you..."

Another silence followed. Quinn wasn't much of a talker, and during their time together, most of their conversations had revolved around Olive. Between the two of them, it seemed there had never been any truly deep discussions.

After a long pause, Quinn finally spoke again.

"Since everything's fine with you... I'll hang up now."

Before she could say anything else, he ended the call.

Cynthia held her phone tightly, her heart suddenly feeling heavy. Could she really... never bring herself to truly care for Quinn?

Albert, gripping the steering wheel, glanced at her despondent expression and felt a wave of irritation. To pull her thoughts away from that man, he decided to speak up first.

"The key's with me."

His words hit her like a bolt of lightning, snapping her back to reality. She turned to him, startled, and asked in disbelief,

"Why do you have the key to my apartment?"

Without looking at her, he replied calmly,

"I got it from Bonnie."

"You—!"

Cynthia was so furious she couldn't form words.

At that moment, the car pulled up in front of her apartment building. He parked, then suddenly turned to look at her. There was a trace of hurt in his eyes, as if her distrust had wounded him.

"Don't worry. I mean no harm. I just hired a cleaner to tidy up and stocked up on some daily necessities for you," he explained.

Cynthia stared at him, momentarily at a loss for words. Had she misunderstood him? She had assumed he pressured Bonnie into giving him the key to make things difficult for her. But now, hearing him say this... Finally, she murmured,

"Thank you."

Then, lowering her head, she got out of the car with Olive in her arms.

He followed her out, retrieving her luggage from the trunk before trailing behind her toward the building.

The apartment Bonnie had arranged for her was located in the central business district of the city. Its prime location offered excellent convenience and high-end surroundings. It was only about a 20-minute drive from there to the TV station.

The large apartment felt eerily empty. Cynthia thought about living alone in such a spacious place and felt a twinge of loneliness in her heart.

Bonnie had mentioned this to her before, and Cynthia had told her that she didn't need such a high-end, oversized apartment. But Bonnie had insisted, saying that as a specially appointed producer at the TV station, she would inevitably have social engagements in the future and couldn't live in a place that looked too shabby.

Still, what Cynthia missed the most was the small apartment she had lived in for four years. She wondered... what had become of it now? Had it been sold again? Or was it still preserved just as it was?

The apartment was on the 10th floor. Albert pulled out the key and unlocked the door. Carrying Olive, Cynthia stepped inside first. She hadn't had the chance to take a good look at the place when his voice came from behind.

"I won't come in. You and Olive should get some rest. Before you officially start work, let her stay with you for a few days."

She turned to look at him. He calmly carried her luggage inside and placed it in the entryway. Handing her the key, he then turned and walked away without looking back.

Watching his tall figure disappear into the elevator, she suddenly felt an inexplicable emptiness in her heart...
