Plotting with You: The Forensic Scientist in Ancient Times!-Chapter 414 - 413: Knocking on the Door
Two days later, the weather was fine, the sun brightly hung in the sky, drying up the last cloud nearby.
At the edge of the woods in one corner of Lianxiang City, a young woman in tattered clothes, disheveled and dirty, limped toward a wooden building not far away.
The wooden building was very tall, and it was impossible to tell how many floors it had from the outside. It stood at the other end of the woods, backed by a towering stone wall, pitch-black and bare, without a blade of grass.
The young woman wore a painful expression, hobbling with one foot, moving with difficulty, exhausted after a few steps, seemingly drained of strength, forcing herself forward.
In this manner, she struggled to reach the wooden building, gritted her teeth, and stretched out her hand to knock on the two imposing and solid ebony doors.
After a while, the door creaked open slightly, and a man in his forties peered out with a puzzled look, seeing a young woman in tattered clothes and a dirty face outside the door.
"Go away! Beggars shouldn’t be knocking here!" He glanced at her clothes disdainfully, trying to shut the door, speaking rudely.
"Please! Don’t close the door! I’m begging you, save my sister!" The woman, seeing this, hurriedly rushed forward, blocking the door as if it didn’t matter if she was crushed by it, "My sister has fainted, just in the woods up ahead!
I beg you, have mercy, give me a bowl of water, a bun or anything, please!
My sister and I haven’t eaten for days. I can still hold on, but my sister has fainted from hunger and can’t hold on any longer. If she doesn’t eat soon, I’m afraid she won’t make it...
Please help us, just a bite of food, a bowl of water!"
The woman knelt on the ground, looking upward, hands clasped together repeatedly in a praying gesture, her big eyes on her dirty face looked exceptionally clear, glistening with tears, halting the gatekeeper’s motion to close the door.
Though her hair was messy, her clothes ragged and dirty, with torn shoes, her eyes were truly captivating, stirring pity.
The gatekeeper hesitated for a moment, sighed: "I’m just a gatekeeper, I can’t make decisions here.
Alright then, wait at the door for a bit, let me ask our steward."
"Thank you! Thank you! You’re such a good person!" Upon hearing this, the woman quickly got up, bowing repeatedly to the gatekeeper.
The gatekeeper hurriedly signaled her to save her strength, then closed the door and went to find the steward.
After the door closed again, the woman outside quietly breathed a sigh of relief, leaning against the door, slowly sitting on the ground.
This woman was Zhu Yu, who in order to make her appearance credible, deliberately went without food for two days, even drinking very little water the previous day, making herself appear emaciated rapidly.
And the "sister" who had "fainted" in the woods was, of course, Yan Daoxin.
Originally, Yan Daoxin did not agree with the current plan; he suggested Zhu Yu pretend to faint in the woods while he went to Little Mountain Building for help, thinking it was a safer option.
"If something goes wrong, at least I can handle it, not to boast, but I’m quite capable of retreating safely." He told Zhu Yu, "What about you? You may be able to make the dead speak, but dealing with deceitful living people, you might not be so effective!
Originally, Lu Qing was unwilling, and if something goes wrong now, he’ll surely skin me alive!"
"No," Zhu Yu shook her head resolutely, "I can listen to you on other matters, but not this one.
Can you really pinch your voice to sound exactly like a real woman?"
Yan Daoxin opened his mouth, squinting, trying to get the feel, pinched his voice and tried again, felt it was not right, tightened his voice further, and said sharply: "Please, have mercy..."
As soon as he said these words, he immediately closed his mouth and shivered violently.
"Do you think anyone would open the door if you asked for help in that voice?" Zhu Yu looked at Yan Daoxin helplessly; his voice gave her goosebumps.
Yan Daoxin had no temper now, initially thinking he could fake being a woman since Zhu Yu usually lowered her voice to pretend as a man.
But after trying it himself, he realized the issue: Zhu Yu could lower her voice because she naturally looked delicate, her build not robust, resembling a young man, so a not deep voice wasn’t surprising.
But no matter how he pinched his voice, he couldn’t mimic a woman’s tone, it sounded awkward.
So Zhu Yu was right, if he went for help, they might not even open the door.
"What should we do now?" Yan Daoxin realized he had been overconfident before, never thought voice would be an issue, now he was unsure, "Even if you ask for help, would they buy my voice?"
"I’ve thought about this, we’ll say you’re my mute sister, born unable to speak or hear but can read lips." Zhu Yu shared her plan with Yan Daoxin.
Yan Daoxin thought it was a reasonable solution, only asking if Zhu Yu had brought the defensive powder, and if she had taken his prepared detoxification pills. Once confirmed there were no issues, he reluctantly pretended to faint in the woods, letting Zhu Yu go alone.
Although Zhu Yu initially got the gatekeeper to soften, she still felt anxious, quietly adjusting her breath to calm her racing heart.
After a while, she vaguely heard noises from inside the door, quickly adjusting her posture, making herself appear weaker.
Soon, the ebony door beside her opened again, Zhu Yu restrained her racing heart, pretended to weakly close her eyes, peeking through slits to see the gatekeeper standing at the door, and beside him stood an elderly woman, barely reaching Zhu Yu’s chest height, both sizing her up inside the door.
