Pokémon: Chronicles of Freedom-Chapter 487 - 486: Wow, What an Appetite!
Chapter 487 - 486: Wow, What an Appetite!
The hatching of Larvitar was known only to Cain and his Pokémon.
For now, Cain had no plans to reveal Larvitar's existence to anyone else.
Even though he wasn't weak anymore and had gained a certain status in the League that made owning a Larvitar plausible, there's a saying: "The tallest tree in the forest is the first to be cut down."
Just like when Professor Oak decided to keep Cain's discovery of Slowking's evolution method a secret.
Cain had great talent as a breeder, and if he also displayed exceptional skill as a trainer, many groups might feel threatened.
To most people, Cain's decision to build a gym seemed like nothing more than a youthful whim. After all, he was still young, and opening a gym for "fun" didn't seem like an issue.
But if others learned of Cain's high potential as a trainer as well, some might not take it lightly.
Not everyone was as tolerant as Giovanni.
Larvitar had not yet been placed in a Poké Ball. Since he was just born, it wasn't suitable to put him in one yet as it might affect his development.
However, since Larvitar's first sight upon hatching was Cain, there was no concern that he wouldn't recognize his trainer.
Cain just had to wait until Larvitar moved past his newborn stage to keep him in a Poké Ball.
For now, Cain faced a minor inconvenience.
Larvitar wasn't like Skorupi, who could conceal himself on Cain's body unnoticed.
And with Larvitar's weight, carrying him was out of the question. While he hadn't weighed him yet, Cain estimated he was between 150 and 200 kilograms.
There was no way to carry something that heavy, so instead of storing him in a Poké Ball—and to avoid detection—Larvitar would have to stay in the backyard.
Fortunately, Cain's backyard was currently secure, with a few Pokémon helping to keep watch.
Among the group of Slowpoke brought back by Slowking, three had evolved into Slowbro after Cain dropped a batch of Shellder into the pond.
With three Slowbro at levels 37–38 and an Absol capable of sensing the future, Cain's backyard was well-protected.
Cain also planned to leave Miltank to take care for Larvitar while the three Slowbro and Absol guarded the backyard. This setup should suffice.
However, even so, Cain couldn't venture far from the backyard. He needed to remain within Slowking's Teleport range.
This meant Cain would have to stay close for a while.
After being away for several days, the backyard pond had grown considerably, now home to many water-type Pokémon.
While not a fully wild habitat, it was close enough, and the Pokémon there showed respect toward Cain.
The Slowpoke group in particular held great respect for Cain, and since they were tasked with guarding the backyard, the other Pokémon followed suit.
That night, Cain decided to sleep in the backyard with Larvitar, forgoing a tent and simply lying on the grass.
In the middle of the night, Larvitar, feeling a bit cold, slowly moved closer to Cain's lap.
The other Pokémon, after finishing their playtime, gradually nestled around Cain as well.
Cain experienced alternating sensations of warmth and cold.
Torchic and Larvitar radiated warmth, especially Torchic, who felt like a small flame beside him.
Mudkip and Poliwag, on the other hand, felt like little blocks of ice.
That night, Cain felt both heat and chill simultaneously.
However, once Honchkrow and the others finished their training, the sensations balanced out.
All the Pokémon huddled around Cain, spending the night together.
...
At dawn the next day, dew covered the grass.
Cain felt his clothes slightly damp.
Gently freeing himself from the Pokémon's paws, he noticed Honchkrow and Slowking were already awake, sharing his daily rhythm.
Torchic and the others were still sound asleep.
Not wanting to disturb them—they deserved a bit more rest—Cain sent Honchkrow and the others to train farther away and began preparing breakfast.
Soon, the aroma of food filled the backyard.
The delicious smell quickly woke Torchic and the others.
Rubbing their eyes, the five small Pokémon turned their attention to Cain's prepared meal.
Even Larvitar, only a day old, ignored Torchic and the others, drawn by the smell of Cain's food.
Smiling, Cain distributed the food among his Pokémon and taught Larvitar how to use utensils.
At that moment, Larvitar noticed the other Pokémon around him for the first time.
He showed no fear, just brief curiosity as he watched them eat.
After a moment's thought, he decided that eating was more important.
He plopped down on the ground and started devouring his meal.
Compared to the noise he made sitting down the previous day, Larvitar seemed to have better control of his body today. While he left a small mark in the dirt, it wasn't as loud.
Still, the other Pokémon were surprised by the mark he left.
They could all sense Larvitar's weight. They couldn't believe such a small Pokémon could leave such a deep dent in the ground.
Larvitar, of course, was oblivious.
The most amusing reaction came from Aron.
Aron observed Larvitar, then looked at himself.
He tried mimicking Larvitar, plopping down on the ground.
The ground sank slightly, but when comparing the dents, Aron realized Larvitar's was deeper.
Aron smiled, satisfied.
Finally, there was someone heavier than him!
With a grin of relief, Aron returned to his meal.
As a hearty eater, Larvitar, despite being only a day old, already demonstrated a voracious appetite.

This time, he ate more than Torchic and Mudkip combined.
Though Cain was pleased, he couldn't help but think:
Wow, what an appetite!
