Pokémon Court-Chapter 835: Master Victor Arrives
After Terrance returned to Fallarbor Town, he finally settled down and began planning the upcoming opening of the Fallarbor Scenic Area.
This matter took up most of Terrance’s time; he even entrusted all Pokémon training entirely to the Rotom Pokédex.
However, today Terrance was not busy with planning for the Fallarbor Scenic Area, but instead was receiving an important guest.
"Master, you’re here."
Terrance hurriedly invited Master Victor into the Fallarbor Gym and said with a smile, "I thought you wouldn’t arrive until the day of the opening ceremony."
"Once things were taken care of, I naturally came," Master Victor said with a laugh. "Aren’t you curious what I’ve been doing during this time?"
"What have you been doing?" Terrance was momentarily taken aback.
"From the day you rescued me from Prison Island, I knew you wouldn’t be content with being just a researcher," Master Victor said, sounding rather helpless.
"But fortunately, you’re still young and have plenty of time to accomplish your dreams. That’s why I support your choice. I only hope that within my lifetime, I can see you reach the peak of being a Trainer, and then one day return and devote yourself fully to the field of research."
"What are you saying..." Terrance scratched his head embarrassedly, like a child who had done something wrong.
"No, you’re extremely talented," Master Victor shook his head. "Perhaps your choice is the right one. So as your master, I simply want to give you a helping hand."
"A helping hand..." Terrance immediately felt confused.
"That’s right," Master Victor replied with a hum. "During my time away, I gathered materials and, drawing upon my lifelong research, formulated several bottles of Genetic Potion." [TN: I’ve been using gene medicine earlier since the author was also using Chinese words for the same, but here the author is using words for Genetic Potion, so from now on, I will be using Genetic Potion in place of gene medicine.]
"I think that with the help of these Genetic Potions, your path to the top might be a bit smoother."
"Genetic Potions?!" Terrance’s eyes widened. "Are they the kind of potions that can awaken Inherited Moves?"
"Hahaha, they do indeed have that effect, along with many other functions. Don’t underestimate any Top Breeder. If Top Trainers are strategic weapons, then the intrinsic value of a Top Breeder far exceeds that of a Top Trainer," Master Victor declared domineeringly.
"Genetic Potions are taboo drugs. The League hasn’t issued clear regulations allowing research into such things. But I couldn’t wait any longer. Seeing my research path reach a bottleneck, I was unwilling to accept it."
"So I developed these. Terrance, what do you think about these Genetic Potions?" Master Victor stared at Terrance intently, clearly hoping for his approval.
Genetic Potions...
Terrance was naturally not unfamiliar with them. In the research notes Master Victor had given him, this miraculous stuff had already been recorded.
What Terrance had come into contact with were Genetic Potions that could assist Pokémon in awakening Inherited Moves. He had even used it to help Ash’s Pikachu, and had planned to research a Genetic Potion to awaken the move Morning Sun himself, so he didn’t particularly resist the idea.
In Terrance’s view, no matter what kind of breeding method it was, as long as one key issue was resolved, then it wasn’t a problem.
"The risk..." Terrance said slowly.
"As for the risk, it’s not very high," Master Victor said with a smile. "This isn’t some evil research, it all follows principles of biology and energy science."
"Let me ask you: can Altaria learn the move Feather Dance?"
"Of course. According to the notes you summarized, Altaria can inherit the move Feather Dance from the genes of Pokémon such as the Pidgey family, the Pidove family, the Ducklett family, the Rowlet family, the Pikipek family, Oricorio, Chatot, and other Pokémon," Terrance replied.
"That’s right. It seems you haven’t been slacking off in your studies of genetics. Theoretically speaking, Altaria’s genes overlap with those Pokémon. This is the most fascinating aspect of genetics—many Pokémon can be traced back to the same origin," Master Victor said.
"But let me ask you this: can Altaria learn Razor Leaf?"
As Master Victor posed the question, Terrance felt as if he had returned to the year he was ten years old, when he had just left Fallarbor Town and met Master Victor for the first time.
Back then, Master Victor had questioned both him and June in exactly the same way.
"Razor Leaf... that shouldn’t be possible, right? Unless it temporarily uses it through Mirror Move," Terrance replied.
"Correct. Altaria has absolutely no possibility of learning the move Razor Leaf. Forcing Altaria to learn it would not be breeding at all, but inhumane and evil modification," Master Victor snorted lightly. Clearly, during his time with Team Rocket, he had seen no shortage of such modifications.
"And my Genetic Potions are scientific. They conform to the principles of breeding science and energy science, so you don’t need to worry about that."
"Theoretically, Altaria can inherit moves like Dragon Rush, Feather Dance, Haze, and Roost. The effects of my Genetic Potions are also limited to this scope—they will not exceed what its species can withstand. After all, safety comes first. This is my research. I believe it is a true academic discipline, a groundbreaking research achievement rather than some crooked, unorthodox path. You understand, right?"
If Trainers were reckless warriors, then researchers, whether specializing in Pokémon or in technology, were the guides of the era. Master Victor had always held this view, which was why he hoped Terrance would devote himself to the field of research.
"I understand," Terrance nodded.
"It’s good that you understand," Master Victor let out a sigh of relief. Earlier, he had been worried that Terrance might misunderstand Genetic Potions, but now it seemed that Terrance’s capacity for acceptance was remarkably strong. In fact, he was quite interested in them, which greatly pleased Master Victor.
Birds of a feather flock together... With Terrance’s transmigrator mindset, he felt that his own ability to accept such things was indeed rather strong.
By this point in the conversation, how could Terrance not realize that Master Victor had spent these days running around for his sake... This was meant to use Genetic Potions to strengthen his foundation and pave the way for his challenge for a seat among the Elite Four!
"You’ve grown on your own all these years, and I haven’t really done anything. Even though I gave you some of my research findings earlier, your knowledge was still too shallow. So I thought about it—I, as your master, should also put in some effort."
"That way, your path will be smoother." Master Victor’s gaze drifted into the distance. He naturally understood how important the position of Elite Four was. The voting rights held by the Elite Four could alter major League decisions. From this alone, one could see their status. Terrance was still young; although he had factional support, Master Victor didn’t want Terrance to follow the same old path he himself had walked—being constrained by others due to insufficient strength. Thus, he paid a considerable price to find Terrance an opportunity to grow stronger.
Only when Terrance possessed sufficient strength could Master Victor truly feel at ease. After all, every member of the Elite Four had experienced at least one assassination attempt, and Master Victor did not wish to see Terrance die young.
"Th... thank you." Terrance took a deep breath. Even though he had not yet seen the Genetic Potions Master Victor spoke of, he understood that this was the old man’s goodwill, and he felt unworthy of such kindness.
"Let’s go to your laboratory. Next, I’ll explain the effects of these Genetic Potions to you," Master Victor said with a smile.
Terrance had grown at a rapid pace, so as his master, Master Victor naturally had to maintain some dignity. These Genetic Potions were his show of strength—a demonstration to show Terrance just how capable his master was, recognize the power of knowledge, and not let success go to his head too early.
