Chapter 172: Whisney’s First Love

"N–no sir... the seller at the seafood market said that... they–they might..."

"Or might not sell it to us. But Derreck leans to the positive side of his optimism that they might sell it to us." Chasey blurted out the words Derreck failed to finish.

The car dropped into silence. Lethia could see Zeran holding back his temper, the veins in his hand bulging as his palm gripped the wheel tightly.

She reached over, patting and stroking his shoulder to stop him from snapping.

"There’ll be a turn ahead on the right. We should take that road." Lethia spoke up while keeping glancing at the phone screen.

"There’s no right turn on the map," Zeran shot back.

"I know. I’ve been searching. The farm Derreck mentioned is behind this forest. The locals purposely don’t put up signs so tourists will think there’s no beach at all, since all you see on the main road is endless trees. We’ll never find the shore if we just keep driving straight." Lethia explained in detail.

["Tch... keep on taking credit for someone else’s thoughts."]

’I didn’t say I thought, I said I was searching, and I’m the one who did the searching.’

From the way Zeran frowned, Lethia knew he wasn’t entirely convinced. But still, he turned anyway.

Lethia rolled the window down, closing her eyes as the fresh air brushed against her face, easing her tension.

It carried the same ambience as her countryside hometown. She thought about how wonderful it would be if one day she could raise her child in a place this lush and alive.

"Is that the locals’ village?" Derreck asked as the car approached a stone gate up ahead, a few people moving about the entrance.

Lethia glanced down at the phone in her hand, comparing the gate in the photo to the one right before her eyes.

"Yeah, I think we arrived," she said.

But as they drove past the gate into the village road, they were stopped by several locals.

They were interrogated, the villagers’ wary, suspicious eyes keeping a clear distance between them.

Derreck and Chasey tried explaining politely that their purpose was only to buy purple sea urchin directly from the farm.

One of the locals, broad and muscular, told them they could reach the farm, but only if they went on foot.

When they stepped out of the car, Lethia barely cared about the three men still arguing with the villagers. Her eyes instead scanned the dense forest surrounding them.

’Are you really sure you’ve been here before?’ she asked inwardly.

["There’s something I haven’t told you."]

’What is that?’ 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

["I told you I might be getting my old memories back, right? But what I didn’t say was, before I came into your body, my old host was still alive. And sometimes I keep wondering if these fragments coming back belong to me... or to her."]

’Wait, didn’t you say if you left your host’s body before your nine tails appeared, that host would die? That’s what you told me, no, that’s what you threatened me with.’

A sudden hand on her shoulder made Lethia turn sharply, gasping when she saw Zeran behind her.

"What?" she yelped, trying to mask her startle.

"Are you okay? Let’s go. We need to head there by walking."

"Ah, sure. C’mon."

"Do you need me to carry you?"

Lethia shot him a glare. "No. I’m still strong." She quickly strode ahead of Zeran. "Stronger than I ever felt before."

And that strength itself was the danger. Ever since that heated make-out on the jet plane, every skin-to-skin touch with Zeran ignited a flame inside her that burned wildly.

She craved him more and more. And deep in her heart, she didn’t want to wait until the wedding.

The four of them walked along the path that led to the farm.

’Whisney, finish what you were saying. Answer me!’

["I know... I said that. And that’s what I know about my being. But since the seventh tail appeared... I’m not even sure anymore. These fragments of memory are more fucking disturbing than I ever expected."]

’And about us coming here, you said you had been here before. Don’t you think this much coincidence doesn’t make sense? You might be completely wrong about your memory.’

Whisney didn’t answer. But that silence, that sudden shift in her, even her tone, it was different. Lethia had never heard Whisney speak in such an unsteady, uncertain voice before.

Heat spread inside Lethia’s body. She could feel Whisney herself unsettled by her own feelings.

And to Lethia, that was far more terrifying than when Whisney lashed out with her sarcasm.

They finally arrived at the farm, and Lethia was struck in awe by the open sea before her.

This beach had little to no sandy shore. Instead, she could see a world of colorful coral reefs shimmering under the crystal-clear water.

And among the reefs, Lethia spotted the purple sea urchins. Her jaw dropped in awe at how surreal the sight was.

All her life, she had only seen dirty, murky seas. So this felt unreal to her, almost like a dream she wasn’t meant to touch.

As her gaze swept across the area, she caught sight of trees with a narrow path leading into the forest.

Unexpectedly, without her will, her feet began to move on their own, carrying her toward that path.

Lethia glanced back at Zeran, but he, Derreck, and Chasey were caught up in conversation with someone who seemed to be the owner of the farm.

She couldn’t even raise her voice to call out to them; her voice refused to come out. Her legs just kept carrying her forward, deeper into the forest.

’Whisney... are you possessing me?’

Whisney still refused to answer.

Her body kept walking through the thick undergrowth.

A chill wrapped around her skin, her breath came faster, and her steps quickened against her will.

Her palm clutched tightly over her stomach.

She glanced around from time to time, but she wasn’t sure she could even find the way back.

After what felt like thirty minutes, Lethia’s lips parted in disbelief when she found herself staring at a house, built of raw mahogany wood, aged and abandoned.

Her body stopped without her command. And suddenly, she felt her composure return, her control settling back into her limbs.

["Here... this is it. This is where I first met my first love."]
