Chapter 142: Chapter 142 - Panicked state

The air inside the office was suffocating, thick with the metallic tang of blood and the acrid stench of sweat and fear.

Yunfeng and Jai stood near the massive glass wall, their reflections ghostly in the dim morning light. The flickering office lights above cast erratic shadows that danced across the carpeted floor, adding to the eerie atmosphere.

Outside, the city was a wasteland. Fires raged in the distance, their flames licking at the sky, while plumes of smoke curled upward like dark serpents. The streets outside were a graveyard of abandoned cars, shattered glass, and the undead, their guttural moans echoing through the desolate urban canyon.

Jai ran a hand through his messy hair. "There’s no way we’re getting back the way we came."

Yunfeng nodded grimly. The main entrance they had used to enter the office was now overrun. The broken lock wouldn’t hold back the growing horde of zombies drawn by the earlier commotion.

Their options were bleak: stay trapped with a group of murderous survivors or find another way out.

Yunfeng turned toward the glass wall. The office window faces the back alley with a few zombies roaming outside. It wasn’t the safest escape, but compared to staying here, it was their only chance.

Jai followed his gaze and smirked, his voice laced with dark humor. "You think you can break it?"

Yunfeng rolled his shoulders, his muscles taut with anticipation. "I can try."

But before he could act, the survivors erupted into chaos.

"No! You can’t break the glass!"

"This is our only safe spot!"

"You’ll get us all killed!"

If it was any other situation Yunfeng would not dare think to hurt anyone. But these peosl were vicious. They planned to us them as shields to escape the attack. It was useless to show kindness to these heartless people.

The wiry man from before lunged first, his eyes wild with desperation. He swung a metal pipe at Yunfeng’s head with a guttural scream.

Yunfeng dodged effortlessly, his body twisting like a coiled spring.

The pipe whistled through the air, missing him by inches.

Before the man could recover, Yunfeng grabbed his wrist and, with inhuman strength, yanked him off the ground and threw him over his shoulder.

The man crashed onto a desk, the wood splintering under his weight with a sickening crunch.

The others hesitated for a split second—then charged all at once.

A burly man lunged from the left, aiming to tackle Yunfeng.

Yunfeng met him head-on, gripping the man’s arms and using his own momentum to spin him mid-air.

With a heavy slam, the burly man crashed into the glass wall. The impact sent a spiderweb of cracks radiating outward, but the glass held.

"fucking bitch!!!! Die!!!" Another woman, wielding a stapler like a weapon, swung wildly at Yunfeng’s face.

He ducked, his movements fluid and precise, and with one hand, grabbed her by the waist and flung her away. She yelped as she landed on a rolling chair, which sped her straight into a filing cabinet with a loud clang.

The last attacker, a bald man, pulled a knife. His hands shook, but he still lunged forward, slashing at him with a desperate cry.

Yunfeng dodged left—but a sharp pain nicked his arm. The first cut he’d taken all night. His blood dripped, bright red against his torn sleeve.

Something inside him snapped.

His glowing blue-green eyes darkened, a storm brewing within them.

Before the bald man could react, Yunfeng grabbed his wrist, twisted the knife from his grip, and smashed his elbow into the man’s gut. The bald man wheezed, the air forced from his lungs, and collapsed to his knees, clutching his stomach.

Jai whistled, leaning against a desk with a smirk. "Damn, Yunfeng. You’re getting good at this."

Yunfeng exhaled, his heart racing. The strange power in his veins still simmered, but he forced himself to stay calm. The survivors lay groaning on the floor, too injured to fight back.

He turned back to the glass wall.

They had wasted enough time.

"Jai," he said, his voice steady. "Stand back."

He clenched his fists, the muscles in his arms coiling like steel springs, and then punched the glass with all his strength.

CRACK!

A web of fractures spread through the glass like lightning. Yunfeng took another step forward—and this time, he kicked.

The entire panel shattered, the shards raining down onto the street below with a cacophony of breaking glass. A rush of cold air hit them as the outside world opened up, the sounds of the undead growing louder.

Jai grinned, his teeth flashing in the dim light. "Now that’s what I call an exit."

But below, the streets weren’t empty.

More zombies had already gathered, their heads snapping toward the sound of breaking glass. Their guttural groans rose in a chorus of hunger, their rotting hands reaching upward as if they could claw their way to the living.

Yunfeng wiped the blood off his arm and took a deep breath. "Let’s go." He grabbed Jai’s arm and dragged him out onto the narrow ledge.

The moment Yunfeng and Jai hit the streets, they broke into a full sprint. The office building behind them was already compromised—the broken glass, the fight, the noise—everything had drawn attention.

Yunfeng kept his head low, scanning the wreckage of the city. Burned-out cars, bodies littering the streets, distant gunfire. The air was thick with the smell of blood and smoke.

Jai panted beside him, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "Where now?"

"We keep moving."

They ducked behind a rusted sedan, pressing themselves against the cool metal.

Yunfeng peered over the hood—zombies shuffled in the distance, dragging their rotting limbs across the pavement. Some feasted on the dead, their gnarled hands tearing into flesh with grotesque abandon.

Jai swallowed hard, his face pale. "Shit..."

Behind them, loud screams erupted.

Yunfeng whipped around.

The office workers had poured out of the building, panic written all over their faces. And behind them? The undead. The bulky man from earlier—the one Yunfeng had thrown into the glass—came barreling after them, his face twisted with rage.

"You little bastards—!" he snarled, his thick arms pumping as he chased them down.

Yunfeng gritted his teeth. They didn’t have time for this.

They ran. Dashing between abandoned cars, slipping into alleyways, keeping low. Every time they thought they lost him, the bastard kept coming. It was like the man had tunnel vision. He wasn’t worried about the zombies. He just wanted revenge.

Yunfeng glanced back.

The horde was closing in.

The bulky man finally caught up, reaching for Yunfeng’s shoulder. But as soon as his fingers brushed Yunfeng’s jacket—

A zombie lunged.

The creature—its face half torn off, its jaws gaping open—grabbed the man’s arm. A look of pure terror crossed his face. He wasn’t chasing them anymore. He was about to die.

Instinct kicked in.

With his uninjured hand, the man grabbed Jai—

And threw him at the zombie.

Jai screamed, flailing mid-air, his eyes wide with terror as the zombie’s rotting hands reached for him.
