Private Marriage, Secret Love-Chapter 131: She’s Like You, Better Than You
Raina Reddington walked over and placed her hand on the doorknob, intending to push the door open.
"Miles Hawthorne isn’t in here," Ethan Lancaster said, leaning against the doorframe.
"I don’t believe you."
Ethan Lancaster kicked lightly at the ground a couple of times. "That’s right. When have you ever believed anything I’ve said?"
The manager, having just finished apologizing to someone, emerged. Seeing Raina Reddington gave him a huge headache. "The person you’re looking for really isn’t here. Please, you should go."
For once, Raina Reddington was compliant. She let go and turned to leave. Just as she reached the lobby, she heard a voice call out, "Raina Reddington!"
She froze, watching Zoe Scott hurry toward her. Zoe’s expression was absolutely livid as she grabbed Raina Reddington’s clothes, trying to drag her outside.
"What a disgrace."
"Mom, stay out of this."
Zoe Scott was trembling with rage, but then she saw Ethan Lancaster right behind them, and she felt her last shred of dignity vanish. "Ethan, you’re here too."
"Someone gave me a call, so I came over."
Zoe Scott grabbed Raina Reddington’s arm and dragged her outside. "Your father is waiting for you at home. Come on, we’re going back."
"I’m not going back."
"What do you think you’re doing? You’ve completely disgraced the Reddington Family!"
Raina Reddington listened to her mother constantly bringing up the "Reddington Family." She stared at Zoe Scott with a faintly amused expression. "Why don’t you just pretend I’m not part of the Reddington Family? Wouldn’t that solve everything?"
"You—" Zoe Scott raised her hand to slap her, but mindful of Ethan Lancaster’s presence, she forced her hand into a fist instead. "Raina, stop this."
"I’m really not just acting out."
"Let her be, ma’am. If she wants to cause trouble, let her." Ethan Lancaster stepped forward to stand beside Raina Reddington. "She’s never going to find the person she’s looking for. Just let her cling to that one hope. Otherwise, wouldn’t living a life worse than death be even more unbearable?"
The moment Zoe Scott heard this, she knew things had gone wrong. "Ethan, this is all a misunderstanding."
"Yes, you’re right," Raina Reddington said, pushing past them and walking forward. "It’s the only hope I have."
Ethan Lancaster’s lips curled into a cold smile. He quickly strode forward and grabbed her. "You really don’t give a damn about our families’ reputations, do you?"
"If you would just relent, Fourth Master, wouldn’t both our families keep their reputations?"
"In your dreams!"
Raina Reddington forcefully threw his hand off. Ethan Lancaster, unable to contain his fury, wrapped his arms tightly around her shoulders, pinning her. She struggled and thrashed in his arms, but was ultimately no match for him. Ethan Lancaster lifted her up, walked to the car where Seth Sinclair had opened the door, and pushed her inside.
"Ethan Lancaster, you’re the one who told my mom to come, right? Are you disappointed she didn’t hit me?"
’Fine. She can blame everything on me now anyway.’ Ethan Lancaster slapped the back of the front seat. Seth Sinclair, who had just gotten in, turned around at the sound.
"Make a call. Tell them that if she dares to make a spectacle of herself again, they don’t need to be polite. They can break her legs."
"Yes, sir." Seth Sinclair said, and actually took out his phone.
Raina Reddington shot up, lunging forward to snatch Seth Sinclair’s phone. Just then, the car started to move. She swayed and fell backward, landing right in Ethan Lancaster’s lap.
She realized what had happened and tried to get up, but Ethan Lancaster held her down. He freed his left hand and took Seth Sinclair’s phone back.
Raina Reddington turned her head to glare at him. "You have quite an appetite, don’t you, Fourth Master? Did that girl from last night not satisfy you?"
Ethan Lancaster tossed the phone forward. Seth Sinclair fumbled it, and it clattered to the floor by his feet.
"That’s right. This isn’t the first time you’ve learned I have a big appetite. How could a little bit like that ever be enough?"
"In that case, don’t waste your time here. It wouldn’t be good to neglect your new flame."
Ethan Lancaster’s arms tightened around her, as if he wanted to crush her. She twisted her body, trying to get off his lap. "Let go."
"Tell me, if Miles Hawthorne knew you were going to such desperate lengths to find him, wouldn’t he be moved to tears?"
Raina Reddington’s gaze drifted out the window. She saw all of Stoneworth submerged in the bleak, cold night. If not for the few scattered streetlights, how could anyone see the road ahead?
"Ethan Lancaster, you don’t have to provoke me like this."
"I’m not provoking you. I’m just having a nice chat with you."
He stared at her face. ’She’s so stubborn, she must have gone to the hospital today after all. There’s a noticeable bruise under her eye. She probably hasn’t even eaten dinner.’
"Do you have any idea how many private clubs there are in Stoneworth? Not to mention all the karaoke joints and bars, big and small. It would take you years to check them all. Besides, all I have to do is make one phone call, and someone will hide him. Even if you pinpoint the exact place, you’ll never find him."
’So, what was the point? As long as he didn’t want her to find Miles, it was useless for Raina to search, even if she turned the world upside down.’
She suddenly fell silent. Ethan Lancaster gently patted her on the back. "Have you had dinner?"
"That girl’s face was badly injured. If it’s not treated in time, it might scar. Did you take her to get it looked at?" Raina Reddington’s words were like a bucket of cold water dumped on Ethan Lancaster’s head. Their eyes met. She would never, for the rest of her life, forget what he had said to her face last night.
’He had said it with his own mouth—that he was going to ’keep’ Gwen Sharp. He was the one who took her away. How could he act like nothing happened and ask her if she’d eaten?’
’This kind of concern was built on her immense pain. She didn’t need it at all.’
"We got it looked at," Ethan Lancaster replied lightly. "I even looked at her photo. She’s got delicate features, very pretty."
"Then congratulations."
They were so close, yet their words were like knives stabbing at each other. Ethan Lancaster was utterly exhausted. "That girl looks a bit like you. But she has a better temper, and she’s more obedient."
Raina Reddington shifted. Ethan Lancaster’s arms loosened, and she took the opportunity to sit beside him. "As long as she’s obedient."
Seth Sinclair’s phone DINGED. A message had come in.
He opened it and glanced at the screen, but because Raina Reddington was there, he didn’t show it to Ethan Lancaster.
Raina Reddington had sharp ears, and on top of that, she was on edge. She felt that any message had to be related to Miles Hawthorne. She moved to lean forward, but Ethan Lancaster saw her and held her back.
"What, are you addicted to grabbing things now?"
Seth Sinclair glanced back, only then realizing she had been about to make a move. He shoved the phone back into his pocket. "It’s just work stuff."
Raina Reddington pushed Ethan Lancaster’s hand away. "Where are you taking me?"
"To dump you back home."
"Then you might as well just drop me on the side of the road. It’ll save me the trouble of coming out again later."
Hearing this, Ethan Lancaster actually did tell the driver to stop. The driver didn’t dare to delay and pulled the car over to the side of the road.
Raina Reddington pushed the car door open and got out without a second thought. Ethan Lancaster’s head throbbed. His anger surged, but he couldn’t unleash it.
"Fourth Master, Miles Hawthorne almost escaped just now, but he’s been caught again."
"Then watch him properly, you bunch of incompetents!" Ethan Lancaster watched Raina Reddington’s figure walk away without looking back. ’Call me heartless, call me cruel. I will never let Raina Reddington find Miles Hawthorne again.’
