Private Marriage, Secret Love-Chapter 159: Someone Else Can Give Birth Too, Right?
She raised a hand to brush the corner of her eye. Ethan Lancaster’s gaze was a mixture of heartache and hatred.
He knew it with perfect clarity. Raina Reddington claimed to hate him, and this—this was the ultimate revenge she had chosen.
She had achieved her goal. Ethan Lancaster was utterly defeated, a pathetic wreck.
Raina Reddington walked past him. Ethan Lancaster spun around to watch her, but she acted as if nothing had happened. He lunged forward, grabbed her arm, and kicked open the bathroom door, shoving her inside.
Raina stumbled. Ethan Lancaster dragged her in front of the jacuzzi, slammed a hand on her shoulder to force her down, and grabbed the shower head with his other hand. He turned on the faucet, aiming the spray directly at her head.
The water was ice-cold. Raina flinched, shivering. She braced her hands on the edge of the tub, clenched her jaw, and remained silent.
Ethan Lancaster was seething with rage and hatred. The water soaked Raina, drenching her hair and collar.
"Why couldn’t you just calm down before you made this decision? Raina, do you hate me so much that you couldn’t even spare your own flesh and blood?"
Raina swayed, and if Ethan Lancaster hadn’t been pressing her down, she might have collapsed.
"If I hadn’t found out you were pregnant, you never would have told me, would you? Is being my child so terrible that I wasn’t even allowed to know he existed?" His voice choked on the last words, and a cold tear slid down the bridge of his nose. "How can you be so heartless? You’re vicious and cruel!"
"I am," Raina admitted. "We’re one and the same."
Ethan Lancaster released her. Raina pitched forward, catching herself on the edge of the tub before slumping down. He dropped the shower head, his gaze falling. Raina’s upper body was soaked through, and her teeth were chattering from the cold.
Ethan Lancaster walked out. When he saw the books, something snapped, and he tore them all to shreds.
Seth Sinclair had been waiting downstairs for a long time. Worried something was wrong, he decided to go upstairs and check.
Footsteps descended from the top of the stairs. Seth Sinclair looked up to see Ethan Lancaster and hurried over. "Fourth Master?"
The entire left sleeve of Ethan Lancaster’s shirt was soaked, and his eyes were vacant. He just stood there for a long moment.
"Fourth Master, are you all right?"
Ethan Lancaster’s voice was barely a whisper. "The baby’s gone."
Seth Sinclair’s expression darkened. "Don’t be disheartened. There will be other opportunities."
A hollow laugh escaped Ethan Lancaster’s chest. "There won’t be any more chances. She doesn’t want one, so I don’t either. It’s not like it’s a big deal. Other women can have my children, can’t they?"
"Fourth Master, please don’t be like this." Seth Sinclair tried to comfort him. "A lot has been happening lately, it’s true."
Ethan Lancaster slumped down onto the steps. "She can hate me all she wants, but she shouldn’t have... not like that..."
Raina remained sitting in the bathroom, unable to get up right away. She had fainted for a moment, only to be jolted awake by the biting cold.
She summoned all her strength to get up and grab a dry towel for her hair. Her body temperature was rising rapidly. Stumbling into the bedroom, she collapsed onto the bed and wrapped the covers tightly around herself.
Seth Sinclair drove Ethan Lancaster to Gwen Sharp’s apartment. The housekeeper who opened the door was startled by the sight of him. "Fourth Master, what happened?"
"It’s nothing," Seth Sinclair told the housekeeper quietly. "If anything happens, you call me directly. Don’t bother the Lancaster family."
"Okay."
Gwen Sharp came out to help support Ethan Lancaster inside. She shot a careful glance at Seth Sinclair. "What happened?"
"Don’t ask questions you’re not supposed to."
Gwen Sharp obediently shut her mouth and led Ethan Lancaster into the room.
He sat on the edge of the bed. Gwen Sharp went to get him a glass of water and offered it to him. "Here, have a drink."
He swatted her hand away, sending the glass crashing to the floor. This was just how Ethan Lancaster acted when he was in a foul mood. Gwen Sharp glanced at his sleeve.
She didn’t say a word. She simply cleaned up the mess on the floor, then went into the dressing room and brought out a fresh shirt.
Gwen Sharp sat back down beside Ethan Lancaster, but he ignored her when she spoke. "How about I help you change your clothes?"
Since Ethan Lancaster didn’t object, Gwen Sharp grew bolder. She reached out and undid the top two buttons of his shirt.
Ethan Lancaster caught her hand, his eyes shifting to her face. Gwen Sharp froze. "You’re soaked. You should really change."
"You should go."
"Go? Go where?" Gwen Sharp froze, stunned.
Ethan Lancaster didn’t answer. His eyes swept across the room, landing on a small, low table set on the bay window. There were a few books on it.
They were Gwen Sharp’s exam preparation materials. Ethan Lancaster looked away from them. "You don’t need to take the exam. I’ll get a certificate for you. You can go wherever you want."
"Did Mrs. Lancaster have a fight with you? Does she not want to see me anymore?" Gwen Sharp clutched his arm anxiously. "I promise I’ll never show my face to her again. I won’t go anywhere near The Verdant Garden or the hospital. I can stop going to malls, too. I’ll just stay home..."
The name "Mrs. Lancaster" grated on Ethan Lancaster’s ears. "I don’t want to hear about her. Shut up!"
Gwen Sharp seemed to understand something from his expression, and she chose her next words to strike right at Ethan Lancaster’s heart. "I know she’s only acting this way because she cares about you. That’s why she can’t tolerate my existence... I’m so sorry..."
To Ethan Lancaster, her words were the cruelest irony.
’Cares?’
The depths of Ethan Lancaster’s eyes turned savage. "And what, exactly, makes you think she gives a damn about me?"
Gwen Sharp was too frightened to utter a word.
"Cat got your tongue?" Ethan Lancaster ripped open the remaining buttons and shrugged off his shirt. He leaned back on the bed, staring at the ceiling. "None of you can see it. It must have all been in my head."
People always cling to false hope. You have to be skinned alive before you learn to face reality.
Afraid he’d get cold, Gwen Sharp brought a blanket over and carefully draped it over him.
The corner of his eye twitched. He tugged on the edge of the blanket, pulling Gwen Sharp down on top of him. She knew he disliked her touching him, so she scrambled to get up, but Ethan Lancaster grabbed the hem of her shirt. "Have you ever thought about the future?"
She shook her head. "I can’t think that far ahead. All I know is that right now is good."
’What did he ever see in Raina Reddington to fall for her so completely, to get in so deep he couldn’t get out?’
’He refused to believe it wouldn’t work with someone else. Could it really be impossible?’
’Her personality was so cold, so hard. She wasn’t a good person at all. Could she really not be replaced?’
Ethan Lancaster refused to believe it.
Raina was practically comatose all night. Her head was pounding, ready to explode, and her body ached as if every bone had been shattered.
Something wet and sticky on her face felt awful. The metallic smell of blood made Raina want to gag. She groggily opened her eyes and saw that her pillow was covered in blood. Nearly half of it was soaked through, which explained why her face and hair were bloody as well.
Raina lifted a hand to wipe her nose, but the blood just kept flowing, seemingly without end.
