Chapter 289 [South City of the Ghost Race]
After finishing his meal, Chen Yan sent Niu Bufan away and left the room alone, his hands clasped behind his back.
Leaving the Four-direction Building, he walked along the street.
The area of North City was bustling; although the streets weren’t particularly wide, they appeared tidy.
Walking uphill along the slope, past two hills in the city, he could see in the distance a city wall under construction.
This wall was not connected to the outer city’s walls; it was somewhat shorter, built from square red stones, and surrounded by workers bustling like ants, with cultivators using spells to move large amounts of earth.
From afar, one could see the dust rising, and though there was an array spraying moisture to suppress the dust, it still spread over an area.
Chen Yan noticed that the closer he got to the construction site, the fewer people were on the streets; even the shops and houses on both sides were closed.
When he reached the end of the street, he saw a squad of North City Government soldiers had set up a checkpoint, preventing further passage.
This squad blocked the intersection, checking literary tokens, and if one had no tokens, they were not allowed through.
Clearly, past this point was no longer under North City’s influence.
Chen Yan stood to the side, arms crossed as if watching the excitement, and saw, beside the soldiers, a table with a person who seemed to be the leader sitting behind it, quietly sipping tea, with his helmet placed nearby.
As Chen Yan glanced over, the leader seemed to sense it and turned to look in Chen Yan’s direction. After their eyes met, Chen Yan maintained an unwavering smile, appearing composed. The leader, seeing Chen Yan’s elegant demeanor and cultivator’s robe, deduced his extraordinary identity and, after a brief hesitation, nodded as a gesture of greeting.
Chen Yan simply walked over to the leader, clasped his hand in salute, and smiled, "General..."
"Not at all, I’m just the captain of a squad, not worthy of the general’s title," the leader, a clever man, smiled slightly and said, "I wonder what business this Fellow Daoist might have?"
"I am a disciple of the Joyful Sect," Chen Yan smiled.
The captain was momentarily stunned, then stood up from his chair and saluted Chen Yan, "So, a disciple of the Holy Sect."
"You’re too kind," Chen Yan waved his hand, smiling, "I just arrived in the City of No Return and don’t know why this checkpoint is set up here?"
The leader frowned and said in a deep voice, "Ahead is the junction between the southern and northern regions of the city. Now, the Ghost Race and the Demon Race are fighting inside the city, even building walls to divide this City of No Return into territories for governance. But the two sides argue endlessly over this boundary, fighting back and forth.
I am here on the orders of the government to set up a checkpoint, to protect our North City territory and prevent those disorderly folks from crashing through."
Chen Yan nodded, "Then... if one wants to cross, is it not allowed?"
The leader shook his head, "It’s possible, but one needs to present a token from each party and register before crossing.
Let’s make it clear first, if Fellow Daoist wants to go over there and take a look, please present your token, and after we register, we don’t really interfere much.
However, once you’re there, your life and safety are your own responsibility. If anything happens, our North City Government will not bear the responsibility."
After pausing, the leader seemed to hesitate, saying, "If you have no pressing matters, it’s best not to go over. If you wish to purchase goods, what can be found over there can be found in the Four-direction Building in our North City. There’s really no need to wade into troubled waters."
As they were speaking, suddenly there was a distant explosion.
A crash like thunder, a loud blast!
Then people began to shout uproariously.
"They’ve attacked! They’ve attacked!!"
Looking to the site where the wall was under construction, a massive arm used for moving earth had collapsed with a thud, and the array maintaining the moisture was torn apart in an explosion!
Amidst the flying dust, they saw an unfinished section of the wall over which countless figures leaped, climbing over from the other side.
At least one or two hundred figures were jumping and leaping from the wall, heading towards the workers building the wall.
The invaders wielded sharp blades, charging like tigers descending from the mountain. The workers on the ground immediately dropped their tools and materials, screaming, and scattered in all directions.
Fortunately, the invaders didn’t kill the workers wantonly; they only frightened and drove them away, then proceeded to destroy the construction equipment.
Quickly, a few flames shot up into the sky, and a few giant arms were pushed over, then blasted apart by beams of golden light.
Finally, on the construction side, more than a dozen cultivators burst out from some low houses, wielding magical artifacts, brandishing blades as they charged forward, engaging the group in battle.
The defenders were few, and after some fighting, several quickly fell. Someone wielded a magical artifact, and two flying swords darted back and forth in the air, occasionally taking one or two of the intruders’ lives.
But it was clear the ambushers had a plan and strategy; seeing the cultivator commanding the flying swords, several lurkers stealthily approached amid the chaos, quietly closing in and then suddenly attacking from several directions.
The guardian cultivator using the flying sword, caught unprepared, although he managed to summon a new magical artifact, sending out an extra flying sword to swiftly slay two attackers, he was nonetheless overwhelmed by the remaining attackers and knocked to the ground. His throat was slit in an instant, blood spraying as his body convulsed before life left him.
