Chapter 181: Not Seeing Him

"Baby, I know exactly what’s on your mind. The truth is, I’ve never forgotten a single one of our anniversaries. I know we’ve been together for a long time, and if we’re talking about giving you a good life... I probably haven’t done enough. I didn’t give you the best days you deserved. You settled for a man like me—and on top of that, you gave me a son. You walked through the gates of hell once. How could I ever forget that? Believe me, I do love you. It’s just... every time, you never fully trust me. Little by little, that distance between us grew deeper."

Every word Aiden said slid into Julia’s heart like a gentle blade, cutting right into her softest place.

"I can’t believe I actually forgot our anniversary... Aiden, am I already old and fading? Twenty-eight years gone in a blink, the kid’s grown... Aiden, I—"

Julia’s eyes were already turning red. Aiden rushed to comfort her. "Don’t cry. You’re a grown woman—crying like this? Isn’t that a little embarrassing? I know I worried you, but I need you to trust me. No matter when or where, the first thing I think about is home. When we got married, I swore I’d only love you in this lifetime. That hasn’t changed. Not once."

Maybe his words were too tender—Julia actually believed him.

She leaned into his arms, but Aiden couldn’t fully wrap her in his embrace.

Her health had never been great. After giving birth to Richard, she was left with a list of ailments. Years of medication eventually puffed her up into the person she was now.

But inside Aiden’s mind, what flashed instead was Olivia’s body—soft, slender, sinuous like water.

Compared to the woman in front of him, wilted like a frost-bitten eggplant... the difference was ridiculous.

He frowned.

Back when she was young, Julia used to be pretty—really pretty. But now? She was a completely different person. There wasn’t even a shadow left of who she used to be.

Now that Julia had lowered her guard, he finally let out a silent breath of relief.

At least for now... he’d managed to smooth things over.

Barely.

Good thing before he left Olivia, he’d brought her perfume and mixed it with some water. Julia didn’t notice a thing.

Looked like from now on, when he went out, he’d have to watch out not just for Julia... but people at the company too.

"It’s getting late. Go upstairs and rest. Be good."

He supported Julia and walked her up the stairs.

Receiving the gift made Julia genuinely happy. The moment she stepped into the bathroom, Aiden immediately began searching for the emerald necklace he’d given her.

Then, from inside his jacket, he pulled out a fake one and swapped them.

A perfect bait-and-switch.

"I’m done showering. Your turn."

"Mm. Okay."

He walked in pretending nothing was wrong. When he came out, he saw Julia lying on the bed.

She was wearing a red silk nightgown.

Julia propped her head up with her hand, looking at him. "Aren’t you coming over?"

Aiden lifted a brow and walked toward her with a playful smile.

...

The next morning.

Sophia and Lucas arrived at the company together.

People were excited the moment they saw her. Everyone seemed to want to say something, yet didn’t know how to begin.

She smiled lightly. "I’m fine. Get back to work."

"Ma’am, we’re just glad you’re okay!"

She let out a soft laugh and pulled Lucas into the elevator.

"Happy?" Lucas asked. She’d been smiling all morning.

"I just didn’t expect so many people at the company to actually care about me."

Technically speaking, she wasn’t close to most of them. She didn’t even visit the company often.

But somehow, they all treated her like she was family—at least enough to celebrate the fact that she survived.

Just as the elevator doors were about to close, Lucas suddenly said, "Should we give them a little... benefit?"

"Benefit?"

Sophia blinked in confusion—until suddenly—

Lucas hooked an arm around her and kissed her.

A loud gasp erupted from outside the elevator.

By the time they reached the upper floors, Lucas’s lips were noticeably red.

Sophia shot him a glare and hurried to fix her lipstick.

Lucas’s mouth quirked upward. He suddenly realized how much he enjoyed seeing his wife glare at him.

He hadn’t even stepped into his office yet when he heard a chorus of wails and chaos.

He shoved the door open—Alex looked completely devastated.

"Boss, thank God you’re finally here."

Six kids running wild was absolutely beyond his ability to control.

"Faye. Charles."

His voice dropped cold.

The two most energetic troublemakers were always those two—Faye and Charles.

"Daddy..."

Faye reached out for a hug, but Lucas took a step back. "It’s been two days. What exactly did you two do?"

"Daddy, I bought you a theme park~"

"A theme park? You spent tens of millions to buy me a theme park? Faye, do you think I’m made of money?"

Faye blinked, tilting her head. "Aren’t you?"

For once, Lucas actually had no comeback.

"Mr. Hilton, Jacob’s secretary called. He wants to meet you."

Alex couldn’t help feeling a little pleased watching the kids finally give their boss some trouble. They had nearly ended his life in the past two days.

At the mention of business, Lucas let out a quiet, "Oh?"

"He hurt Sophia, and he still has the nerve to show his face?"

"Mr. Hilton, I heard he’s planning to step down completely and hand his company over to Damien."

"Handing it to Damien... It was only a matter of time. He just moved the timeline up."

Lucas sat down beside the desk. Alex handed him a phone. "Pictures from Jacob. He bought two properties back in his home country. Many of his relatives have returned as well. He already held a family meeting. Now he’s just waiting for Damien to take over. Suddenly wanting to meet you now? His motives aren’t clean."

Lucas rested his chin on his hand. Jacob’s intention wasn’t obvious, but from what Lucas knew, Jacob had been contacting people overseas to help him break into domestic markets.

And now he suddenly wanted to see him...

"Boss, are you going to meet him or not?"

"No."

He answered without a hint of hesitation.

Last time Jacob showed up, it was intentional.

After playing tricks on him, he still expected Lucas to act like nothing happened?

"Ha."

"Alex, tell him if he wants to see me, he can get in line like everyone else. Make an appointment."

There were countless people who wanted to meet Lucas—enough to wrap around the block outside his building. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Even with a line, it would take ages.

So why exactly should Lucas drop everything just because Jacob showed up?

If they weren’t going to work together anymore, why give him the courtesy?

"Mr. Hilton, will Jacob’s influence overseas affect any of our branches?"

"Hilton Group got where it is because of strength. Unless you think he’s stronger than we are?"

"That’s not what I meant."

Of course he believed Hilton Group outclassed Jacob’s company by far.

Lucas tapped his fingertips lightly against the desk.

"Get back to work. Tell me if anything else comes up."

Alex nodded, turned around, and took two steps—

His phone rang again.

He turned back to Lucas.

"Boss, it’s Jacob."
