Chapter 189: Someone Made a Move

Vivian forced a smile and continued, "I just noticed Sophia earlier—it looked like she even put on makeup. She’s naturally beautiful, but wearing makeup during her period isn’t good. It can clog her pores. I usually don’t wear any at all."

Lucas was cutting Sophia’s steak into small pieces.

Every word coming out of Vivian’s mouth made him like her a little less.

Back when she saved him, he had been grateful.

He never imagined that after such a short time, she would turn into this.

Was all of it... because of Sophia?

"Vivian, I—"

"Lucas, I didn’t mean anything else. I was just giving my opinion. Sophia is very generous—she wouldn’t be petty."

"Auntie."

Angela suddenly spoke.

"What is it?"

"You said you didn’t put on makeup? Then what’s this?"

She stepped closer and swiped a finger across Vivian’s cheek—coming away with a thin layer of foundation.

"I—Angela, that’s just foundation. It’s not ’makeup.’"

"Oh? Really?"

Angela looked up just as Sophia returned. She immediately ran over and tugged her mother close. Then, without hesitation, she rubbed her black sleeve across Sophia’s cheek.

Nothing came off.

"Auntie, look. My mommy isn’t wearing makeup."

Angela was always well-behaved—and sharp.

Sophia ruffled her hair and sat down.

"Were you talking about me just now?"

Vivian’s smile grew stiff.

Across from her, Sophia’s face was bare, yet her skin looked like she was already wearing makeup.

"Sophia, are you feeling unwell? Your lips look pale."

"My lips are pale?"

Sophia lifted the corner of her mouth and chuckled softly. "Don’t worry—I’ve got someone."

"Huh? Someone?"

Vivian blinked, confused.

Then Sophia turned, grabbed Lucas by the tie, and kissed him.

Within seconds, her lips were visibly rosier.

Vivian froze.

She never expected that kind of counterattack.

"Vivian, sorry—I forgot you didn’t have a boyfriend. But you’re not young anymore. You really should go find one. Someone that actually belongs to you. After all, what’s on someone else’s plate... will always be someone else’s."

A clean, elegant, double-edged stab.

Vivian’s smile finally collapsed.

"Mommy, I’m full," Charles said, patting his round stomach and leaning back.

"Full already?"

All six kids nodded.

Sophia looked at Vivian and smiled graciously. "We had a wonderful meal. Thank you for treating us."

"Not at all, as long as you’re happy."

"Lucas, Miss Cooper is alone. It wouldn’t be nice to let her leave by herself. Why don’t you walk her out?"

Lucas didn’t object.

But having been humiliated inside and out, Vivian wasn’t about to stick around and embarrass herself further.

She quickly declined. "I have my car. I’m going shopping afterward—no need to send me."

"Are you sure? Wouldn’t it be too—"

"Really, no need."

Vivian smiled, went to pay the bill, and practically rushed out.

Sophia let out a quiet breath and sat back down.

"Mommy, does your waist still hurt?"

Six little faces stared at her with worry.

She smiled gently. How could she deserve six treasures like them?

"It doesn’t hurt anymore."

"Sophia, about Vivian—"

"You don’t need to say it. I already have a basic understanding of her. But... you’re mine. If she wants to steal you, she’d better see if she has the ability."

Her words made Lucas’s mood brighten instantly.

Listen to that—his wife was jealous.

"Come on. Let’s get back to the company."

As soon as they walked into Hilton Group, Alex hurried over.

"Mr. Hilton, Madam, Mr. Marcus has been waiting in the office for a while."

"Uncle Gordon?"

Sophia suddenly remembered—Marcus had said he was coming back to the company today.

She instantly walked faster.

"Uncle Gordon!"

Her voice arrived before she did.

Marcus put down the magazine in his hand and teased, "You’re back."

"Uncle Gordon, why are you at the company? You could’ve just gone straight to Blackstone Manor."

"I don’t have many relatives in the country, and Blackstone Manor is too quiet. The company’s livelier. I came today to tell you that I’ve already closed deals with the three business partners from yesterday."

Quite a few people at the banquet had wanted to collaborate with YL. In the end, three were shortlisted—Sophia already had a good guess who they were.

"That’s right," Marcus continued. "They’re the three you pushed to me. Their foundations are still a bit weak, but if they get the chance, they might break into the top ranks."

"That works. YL has plenty of branches in the country. I originally wanted you to go check them out yourself, but time is tight. When I’m free, I’ll go do the evaluations personally."

Marcus nodded, his gaze shifting to Lucas, then back at Sophia. The more he looked, the more satisfied he seemed.

"I’ll go visit your mother later. I’m leaving at six this afternoon."

"I’ll go with you."

"You stay put at the company. I do use a phone, you know—I see everything. If you’re not feeling well, don’t run around. Understand?"

The hot search was practically dominated by Lucas, with one drama premiere struggling to squeeze past his name.

"Uncle Gordon, don’t be like them—don’t let yourself be corrupted," she muttered, covering her face.

Was trending every other day really a good thing?

"Don’t be shy. When I was young, I also helped—"

He suddenly stopped talking.

"Helped who?" she asked, confused.

He chuckled, "No one. Just the past. It’s all over."

Marcus stood and straightened his clothes, his voice deepening. "Take good care of yourself."

He headed toward the door.

Sophia’s heart suddenly thumped—hard.

"Uncle Gordon..."

His figure grew smaller as he walked away.

Sophia abruptly ran after him and grabbed his arm.

"You child, what’s wrong?"

"Uncle Gordon... I want to come with you. I miss her too."

She leaned against Marcus’s shoulder, her eyes slightly red.

She wanted to call him something—one word—but the moment she opened her mouth, it got stuck in her throat.

Maybe she still needed... the right moment. Just a little more.

"Boss, aren’t you going to chase after the lady boss?"

Alex leaned toward Lucas with a kind, almost grandfatherly smile.

Suddenly—

He felt a wave of disappointment radiate toward him.

He looked up to see Lucas staring at him with a blank expression.

"Ahem—Boss, I have some very important data I haven’t delivered yet. I’ll... go find it."

And he fled. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Lucas braced himself against the desk and sat down, powering on the computer.

Then, something caught his eye—the drawer beside him.

His expression sharpened.

He turned his head, looked more closely... and frowned.

He had always been extremely cautious—he left contingencies everywhere, especially in his office.

On the edge of the drawer, he always placed a strand of hair.

If anyone opened it, it would fall... and disappear.

Now, every single strand was gone.

He crouched, picked up a few hairs from the floor, and rolled them between his fingers.

There were no coincidences—not ones like this.

He stood, staring at the door.

Someone tampered with the cabinet.

Was it Uncle Gordon?

If so... why?
