Quills: the Rise of the Northern Matriarch-Chapter 102: It Pours (2)
Chapter 102 - It Pours (2)
Kai stood up and looked at the two cradles. He smiled as he looked down at Talan's daughter. She looked just like her Mother. What a treasure. He looked at his son with a smile. Time would tell on their facial structures, but he was certain they would grow up to look just like her. He looked forward to bonding with these children. These were Quills, through and through. He was stoked to have a male child to care for.
"They do not look a bit like a Hudai. It is wonderful, is it not?" Kai said, giving Talan a smirk. Talan laughed happily.
"I am so glad they do not look at me. I get to look at my children and see Nora." Talan said, giving a gentle smile. His son stretched and yawned, opening his eyes and staring up at him. He had his eyes. It was not as repulsive as he thought it would be. He loved all the children immensely, but an immense warmth filled his heart as he watched his own biological children. "I am going to have to be very protective of them." Talan said, happy tears coming to his eyes.
"You have got us buddy. Message me when you guys are ready to go", Kai said as he left the room. Kai and Kadir went downstairs to help Cerez and Liem. Talan sat down and worked as he waited for the transfusions and scans to be done. He went to the bathroom and came back just as she was rousing. Talan called for Janel to come into the room as Nora stirred under the blankets. He came into the room, looking so much better than he did hours ago when Nora was in danger. Talan was glad to have Janel and the caring medical staff around them that really put their whole hearts into their work. Janel disconnected the transfusion line and the infusion lines and passed a dermal scanner over the skin to heal the sites instantly. He injected her with some antibiotics and pulled out the oxygen.
"Nora, are you feeling any discomfort?" Janel said as she roused.

"Ugh." Nora croaked, opening her eyes. Nora took a look at the two small cradles in the room and felt relief. She felt incredibly drained still even though she had just woken up. The events were pretty muddled from when she stood up this morning. She remembered bits and pieces of the events leading up to getting to this room. It felt jarring as her eyes started to focus. She looked at the dimming sky, the rain still snaking down the window.
"I am cold, nauseous and still a little disorientated. What happened? Are they healthy?" Nora asked weakly. Janel approached her bed, it was easier to focus now.
"First of all, let me take care of the discomfort, we had to sedate you pretty heavily." Janel said as he injected her with medication to clear up her symptoms. He heard her sigh with relief.
"Talan, you're crying. It is alright. I am okay." Nora said as she looked over to the man now that her eyes could focus properly.
"Nora-" Talan choked. Nora looked at him puzzled.
"It was close, Nora. We had to give you some blood and fluids. It was honestly a fluke occurrence, the placenta started to detach. Your blood pressure was high, we do not know if it was gestational at that time. But it was pretty close for a minute or two when we delivered your male infant. An artery tore during the surgery, as well as your uterus would not stop bleeding from the separated placenta." Janel said as he recounted the birth. Nora could see Janel was distressed. "We were able to completely mend it, but it would be best not to return to normal activity for at least a cycle. You need rest. I have compression garments that I would like you to wear during that time to help you recuperate." Janel said in a rambling tone, with worry in his voice. Nora could tell that he was really shaken.
"I know that bleeding can occur during a surgical birth, it was an emergency situation. Please know that I am sincerely thankful to everyone for saving my and their lives," Nora said.
"I was really frightened, Nora, honestly. You could have died. I want you to consider taking a longer break," Janel said. Nora sighed. It did not look like he was being excessively worried. He was serious.
"I do think I could use a long break. Can I see them? I don't even know what they look like." Nora asked. Janel's worried face eased as a smile bloomed on his face. He had not had the chance to hold them, but they looked cute. Janel walked over to the closest cradle. He opened the cradle for the female infant. She was healthy. She stirred and gave the tiniest yawn, stretched and whimpered because her warm, comfortable environment had been disturbed. He disconnected her direct oxygen lines as she no longer needed them. She voiced two short grunts of discomfort. Janel smiled and stepped back.
"Hello, beautiful, you are breathtaking" Talan smiled as he picked up the now larger infant, he handled her like a precious treasure. Her fine hair had dried vibrant red hair. He kissed his daughter's forehead and reluctantly handed her to her mother. Nora took the warm bundle into her arms. She was filled with happiness as she heard the whimpering die down as she held her.
"Hello Sage." Nora said as she teared up as a small hand reached out for her. Nora looked surprised to see the red hair. She had her coloring, which surprised her considering she was part Hudai. Perhaps her eyes might change to Talan's beautiful violet, they were a dark color.
"I waited until I confirmed my pregnancy to have intercourse with anyone else but Talan. Are they Hudai?" Nora asked, genuinely concerned that they might be Allari or Halid. Talan stifled a laugh.
"So they look like their mother. All the better," Talan said.
"They are indeed Hudai. I checked when I did their screening. Interestingly enough, they both inherited your capability to have many female heirs. Both of them appear to be cleared of genetic anomalies. He is the first male to be free of the anomalies that cause Morrits Syndrome," Janel announced happily. Nora smiled widely. If the government wanted an easy cure, one of her sons might be the panacea the world needed.
A woman can only bear so many children. A man could have millions of children on a planet like this. It would always be her child's choice as to whatever they did. She was determined to help find a cure and this was a wonderful and easy start. Being the catalyst of change on a doomed planet was a wonderful experience. Whatever the solution she knew they would eventually come to, she would prefer the person to sacrifice anything would be herself and not those precious to her.
"My son?" Nora asked, curiously looking at the cradle across the room. Janel walked over to check.
"He will need more time before he is able to come out. 'Males lungs develop at a different rate." Janel said as he rolled the cradle over.
"But as you can see, he is just as handsome," Janel said with a warm tone. Her son laid in what looked like a complex incubation cradle. They were early, but already bigger than she thought they would be. Nora looked lovingly at him. He stretched and opened his eyes and seemed to look at her.
