Quills: the Rise of the Northern Matriarch-Chapter 79: Nora (Continued)
Chapter 79 - Nora (Continued)
'No, I do not want to see this again.' Nora thought, trapped at the moment in her dream. She could hear her own heartbeat and the sound. Time seemed to slow down as snowflakes passed by. It was fluffy, wet snow. Each flake was suspended, some hung in clusters. Such a slow moment.
'Now you are going to scream for help.' Nora thought, as things played out. It would have been a normal day at school if she and Ivy had not caught that head cold.
"Help us please!" Nora screamed, crying, feeling that her sister's situation had worsened. She saw someone try the door handle and wave their hand inside her side of the vehicle.
"Let's open this up, oof." the woman moved her hand about, she disengaged the child's locks and tugged again. "Damn. Looks like I will have to lie down to talk to you. Well worth it though" she said, and continued "Oh my. You are a brave girl. What is your name?" a young woman said to her outside the car.
"Lenora," Nora said to the stranger. "My sister is hurt badly. Please help her first." Nora begged. They tilted their head to see little Ivy with a tree limb sticking out of her. Unlike Nora, there were no visual signs of her breathing.
"Oh dear. Someone is coming for her. Look at me, Lenora instead. Focus on me. What is your mother's name?" said the young woman, trying to persuade her by waving her muddy arm.
"Fiona Du Pont. What is your name?" Nora asked.
"My name is Katie. I saw your Mum play once, probably before you were born. I am going to shine this light in your eyes, Lenora. Keep them open. Like the song," asked Katie. The light shone brightly in her eyes again. Sirens grew louder in the distance.
"Mommy, will you wake up? Help is coming?" Lenora said, turning her head slightly. When there was no answer, she wiped her face with her jacket sleeve.
"You need to look at me, Lenore," Katie said.
"It is Lenora. Can you give me my Bunny?" Nora asked, looking for something to hold on to; as a child the reality was setting in. She could not deny it any longer.
"Mommy is not asleep is she?" Lenora said with a frown.
"Miss, we need you out of the way," a male said.
"One sec, please." Katie said. Katie looked sad and slid partially into the cabin, and gripped her bunny, holding it out to the child as sirens blared from all directions.
"Miss, you can't do that." a male voice shouted.
"She needed it. I am moving," Katie said. "Nora, stay strong." Katie said as she wiggled out of the cabin. Nora held her toy tight, tears dripping. "Hold on Nora, they are coming," Katie said.
"Please do not go." Nora whimpered.
"I have to so they can get you all out," Katie said as she pulled herself out.
'My eyes keep opening and closing. I hate this. I cannot close them. Oh god. Mom. Mom. The blood. It is on you.' Nora thought.
"Lenora Quill, age five or six. Definite head injury. Her pupils are dilated, she is not tracking objects well and her eyelids are periodically droopy. She seems to be breathing alright. I did not want to touch her, her seat belt is thread bare. She might have been tossed about." Katie explained. A man came to the window.
"Hello Lenora. It is going to get loud while we get a special piece of equipment to get you out." He passed her a pair of children's earplugs that they kept for emergencies like this on the truck." Put these in your ears Sweetie." he said loudly over the loud sound of the engines. "Close your eyes. And keep them closed until I tap you. It would sound scary. But do not worry." he said in a stern voice.
Nora took the earplugs and put them in each ear, even the swollen one like a good girl. As the jaws of life started to cut through the frame, she started to get really scared and started to sing Katy Perry's "Firework" loudly as the firefighters cut the door open to drown out the noise. She could feel the car shake and tremble as they cut and sang louder and louder until her throat hurt. Tears ran from her eyes. She held her bunny tight. After the rattling stopped, she felt a light tap on her nose and opened her eyes to see the fireman looking at her.
"You are very brave, Lenora. Now I am going to check you for injuries." he said.
"What about Ivy and my Mommy?" Nora whimpered.
"We checked them first, while your eyes were closed. We have to get you out first to cut them out." he said as he quickly checked her. "I am now going to cut your belts. I will catch you okay, I need you to hold your head like this. Okay, Lenora?" the man said, demonstrating, refocusing the little girl.
"Okay." Nora heard herself say. He quickly cut her out of her seat and pulled her out of the vehicle. The driver's side of the vehicle was smashed, and the woman and other girl who were in worse condition had no pulses. It was a miracle that she had survived this crash. Some sadistic fuck had cut the belts to a thread. It was likely an attempt on the owner and occupants' lives.
"Okay, I need a board outside, now." he yelled to his coworkers as he shimmied out the narrow window with the little girl. They were tugged out, and she was strapped to a hard board.
"It is okay Lenora." Katie, the muddy lady said. She stayed with her with a blanket draped around her trying to distract her as the paramedics packed her into an ambulance. Her warm hand stroked hers.
"She's got a head wound, glass in her, other open cuts and contusions. Possible rib and spinal", the firefighter said as they finished. "Identification on DOA is Fiona Du Pont and Ivy Quill", a man with a radio said.
"No shit." another male voice said.
"Upton Hospital is the closest," Nora heard them.

"Call the next of kin to notify, when she is with the Pediatrics Emergency team." Nora heard the conversation outside the door before the paramedic climbed in and closed the door as the ambulance took off.
"No, wait for my Mommy." Lenora pleaded as the ambulance took off, and she felt the paramedic pressing on a painful area of her scalp to stop the trickle of blood.
"We cannot, Lenora. You have to see a doctor immediately." The paramedic said as her consciousness faded. She heard a lot in the darkness. She did not know how long it lasted. A familiar sound of the French language filled the room, the scent of Papa's cologne, cigarette smoke residue and black coffee emanated from beside her. She felt a warm calloused hand stroking hers. Papa was crying. Another voice, it could not be her.
'Mommy? Oh! it hurts.' Nora thought. Her eyelids tried to open, they felt like lead. She was so uncomfortable.
"I thought he was out of town. Where was he?" Angelina Du Pont said to her mother. "Don't tell me? I will fucking kill him." Angelina raised her voice. Nora opened her eyes slowly.
"Shh, she is waking up. Angel, go into the hall and calm down. She cannot see you now." Alden said sadly. When she awoke her grandparents were in the room. Her grandmother's red-rimmed eyes looked at the little girl.
"Mommy?" Nora asked weakly, and the woman began to sniffle and break down and shake her head. She walked up and stroked her cheek.
"I am so sorry Lenora, Fi- your Mother did not make it. Ivy too." Alden said. "I'm sorry bebe." he continued, and as grandfather broke down in front of her.
"But. I thought I heard her?" Nora whimpered
"That was your Aunty Angelina," Monique said sadly. "She will come back and see you soon. I know you are confused, Nora." Monique reached out and cupped her cut-up hand sadly. Her father was outside the room talking with police officers. She felt the hot tears of grief sting her eyes.
"Maman, Papa, no." Nora cried. Nora sobbed. She spotted her bunny who had a little blood on it. Malcolm peered into the room. Nora looked at her father, perplexed. "Daddy?" Nora heard herself say. She looked over at Malcolm in the doorway.
'Should he be in Dubai? If he was here, why was he not here with us? That is right. Today is Jennifer's birthday. That is where he was. ' Nora thought, feeling betrayed. She looked at her father, who was looking at her with pain in his eyes, and something else.
'Wait a minute.' Nora thought. She remembered the look in his eyes at that moment, it was disappointment and burden. His eyes changed to green, brown, violet and amber. The dream always ends this way. But the eye colors were new.
