Raised From The Wild-Chapter 376: The Cure
Nower Research Institute.
Princess Amaya woke up from her sleep when she heard a commotion outside her room. She got out of the hospital bed. She was wearing a thick white cotton pajama. She did not need to wear an overcoat.
Doctor Wallace was talking to Leon, and his tone was serious.
"What’s the matter?" the Princess asked.
The doctor spoke in a composed manner as he announced the news: "The crown prince of Albanya and his guard are both in critical condition." It was just a normal occurrence for him.
Princess Amaya was worried. She went inside the room, took what looked like ampules from her bag, and passed it to the doctor.
"I forgot about this earlier. This is an immune booster, and this could help Prince Raquim and his guard buy time before you find out about the cure. You can also administer this to General Jones and the two captains."
Doctor Wallace looked at the Princess and the ampules in her hand. Why did she suddenly sound so domineering? He hesitated and did not take the ampules.
"Hurry up and administer this to them. Or could you bear the outcome if Prince Raquim dies under your care? I told you before that we are together with them and should have been exposed to the same pathogen. We were not infected partly because we took the pill version of this immune booster. As to why we were resistant, I hope Doctor Wallace and your team have already made progress in your research by now."
Doctor Wallace did not hesitate anymore. He took the ampules and hurriedly left the room.
Leon looked at Princess Amaya with a complicated look. He had not taken the pill yet and was not infected, either.
Princess Amaya seemed to have guessed his thoughts. "The water dispenser in the hotel suite is infused with this immune booster. But I suspect this is not the sole reason we are not infected."
"Go back to sleep, Princess. It is still very early. We will let you know about the developments," Leon said, his voice gentle.
Princess Amaya just hummed but did not enter the inner room. She sat on the couch and checked her cellphone. Ren sent her a message.
’Sis, I came across a piece of highly classified information. The hostage from Chaneya has gotten sick and confined in a military hospital in the Chaneyan Capital and is currently isolated. I am worried about you.’
Princess Amaya felt troubled by Ren’s message. She couldn’t shake the concern that if the hostage had interacted with others, the virus might have already begun spreading.
"Did any other hostages get released after the Prime Minister’s daughter?" Princess Amaya inquired, fixing her gaze on Leon.
"Yes. The governor of North Island in Usturia also paid the ransom and had taken his son back to North Island." Leon replied in a serious manner.
Vasquez listened to the two and was silent as he busied himself with his cell phone.
"What happened to the rescue operation, as General Jones has become unconscious?" Princess Amaya asked. Then she stood and walked toward the water dispenser to get some water, but Leon had already handed her a glass.
"Another General took over. However, the defense minister, who was rumored to resign, mobilized Uropa’s elite forces, infiltrated the hotel, and subdued the hostage takers. Three men escaped, including the leader."
"How about the hostages? Weren’t they quarantined?"
"Something is off. General Jones had given the order to have them quarantined, but the latest news I got was that they were now on their way back to their countries at their parents’ insistence." It was apparent that Leon was displeased judging from the tone of his voice.
"Then, can they be prevented from getting off the plane?"
"There should still be time. Except for the hostage from Chaneya, the rest are still on the plane. It was clear that the mastermind behind the scheme was highly cunning, with a well-thought-out plan to unleash a global virus." A glint passed across Leon’s dark orbs. He opened his laptop and logged on to a website.
Princess Amaya stood and started pacing. She was deep in her thoughts. He was worried about Prince Raquim, and she was also thinking about why they have immunity to the virus.
"Princess, why don’t you go back to sleep?" Vasquez finally could take it. He felt dizzy watching the Princess walk back and forth inside the room.
"I can’t sleep. I am trying to figure out why we were not infected. They should be able to use our blood to develop the vaccine, right?." Princess Amaya finally settled beside Leon.
"They should be," Leon replied, then glanced at Princess Amaya. "Please go to sleep, Princess. You are starting to have dark circles under your eyes."
Princess Amaya finally relented and went into the inner room to sleep. When she woke up, it was already afternoon. Doctor Wallace was outside excitedly looking for her.
"Princess, the ampules that you gave me were a miracle. The Prince of Albanya’s condition stabilized. It triggered the immune system to fight off the virus and prevent it from spreading. It could not, however, totally eradicate the virus. It could only weaken it to the point of dormancy." The doctor paused, the smile on his face fading.
"However, at 6:00 am, Prince Raquim and his guard’s platelet started to drop. It seemed as if the virus mutated."
The door opened before Doctor Wallace could say some more, and another man in full protective gear entered.
"Doctor Wallace," he greeted excitedly. "We had a breakthrough. The disease was similar to the one that struck a group of scientists who explored the forests of Ra-iya five years ago."
"Doctor Peterson, are you sure about this?" Doctor Wallace asked the young doctor.
"Yes, Doctor Wallace. All the symptoms matched. The only difference is that the incubation period of the current virus is very short, and replication is high-speed. Based on their journal, the virus probably came from bats because they took shelter in one of the caves filled with bat droppings." Doctor Peterson continued to explain, holding a tablet in his hand.
"It looks like Princess Amaya and her two guards were previously exposed to a weaker variant of the virus and, therefore, developed immunity to it." Doctor Peterson looked at Princess Amaya with shining eyes as if he were looking at a very interesting lab subject.
Princess Amaya and Vasquez looked at each other. They had indeed entered Mount Paraiso more than two years ago.
Then, both of them turned their gaze to Leon.
