Raised From The Wild-Chapter 394: The Chase
Princess Amaya had one arm resting limply in her lap while the other cradled her head against the window as the car hummed along the highway.
The white broken vertical lines on the highway, awashed by bright yellow light from their headlights, the low, constant murmur of the engine, and the rhythmic thrum of the tires on the asphalt, created a soothing lullaby that pulled the princes deeper into drowsiness. Her eyelids fluttered, heavy with fatigue, struggling to stay open.
Suddenly, the car veered to the left. The inertia threw her body to the left, but the seat belt restrained her.
The princess jolted, and her drowsiness was gone.
"What happened?" She asked anxiously.
"Vehicles are coming after us, and a helicopter is above us, " the man on her left said calmly and unperturbed.
Only then did Princess Amaya hear the roar of engines above them. A thunderous beat filled the air, the unmistakable sound of helicopter blades slicing through the sky.
The chopper hovered overhead, its spotlight locked onto their car and sweeping over them, illuminating their car and its surroundings.
Princess Amaya glanced at the side mirror and saw the blinding headlights of the cars behind them.
Their pursuers were relentless, with the cars moving in formation, trying to box them in.
"Hang on tight!"
The man in the driver’s seat floored the accelerator. He turned the steering wheel, causing the black SUV to swerve sharply, narrowly avoiding the center island, leaving a trail of screeching tires.
Then, the car accelerated like an arrow, putting distance between their car and the pursuing cars.
But no matter how excellent the driver was, the car reached its limit. The distance between the vehicles chasing them was getting shorter.
Princess Amaya opened the car compartment, took out a backpack, and hurriedly opened it. She groped inside until she found what she was looking for.
"Move to the inner lane." She instructed the driver.
The man veered to the left while Princess Amaya opened the window and dropped a golf-sized black ball into the road.
The moment the object made contact with the cemented road, it exploded and released a thick smoke.
The explosion caught the drivers of the chasing vehicle off guard.
One of the drivers lost control, and the car veered to the right and crashed into a metal lamppost on the side of the street.
The force of the crash sent the car spinning out of control, metal crumpling and glass shattering in a deafening cacophony.
The rest of the cars were in no better shape. The second black car was pushed sideways, its front end mangled and twisted and the hood was crushed. The once bright headlights, flickerd weakly as shattered glass littered the asphalt like tiny diamonds.
The fourth car rear-ended the third car as it abruptly stopped.
The aftermath was a scene of stillness and destruction, a sharp contrast to the speeding motion of the chase just moments before.
The explosion and the heat wave had also affected the helicopter hovering above. The pilot lost control and was forced to land to avoid a fatal accident.
Princess Amaya dialed the emergency number and reported the accident.
The Dragon Lord continued to travel at maximum speed, turned right at the next exit, and entered a small dirt road leading to the woods.
He parked the car under a tree and turned off the headlights. The car was shrouded in darkness. Princess Amaya became vigilant.
’What is he trying to do?’ Princess Amaya asked herself silently. She clutched the dagger hidden in her inner thigh. She thought it was wrong for her to trust the man.
"Stay here!" The man dressed as Dragon Lord opened the door, using his watch as a flashlight. He then went to the back and opened the cargo door.
He retrieved a weatherproof car cover designed for outdoor use from his motorcycle and carefully draped it over the SUV. The cover was crafted from a lightweight, transparent plastic material, which conformed snugly to the car’s contours like cling wrap. Its vibrant red hue made a bold statement, and it even obscured the license plate with a fresh combination of three letters and three digits.
The Dragon Lord swiftly transformed the car in just a minute, then resumed his position behind the wheel. As the car merged onto the highway, he began to drive with a relaxed and unhurried pace.
"Who are you exactly?" Princess Amaya asked. She did not get off the car to watch him as she originally intended but with the help of ExZee she learned that he changed the color and the plate number of the car by wrapping it with a special car cover.
"You can call me Dragon Lord, Princess," the man replied with a light tone. He suddenly veered to the outer line and exited the highway.
Princess Amaya was distracted by a notification on her watch.
’Princess, this is not the way to your hotel.’ ExZee reminded her.
Before she had the chance to express her dissatisfaction, the car pulled into an underground parking lot and came to a halt in a secluded area not covered by cameras.
He took out his cell phone and played around with it for two minutes.
"I took care of the cameras. There will be no trace of us entering the parking," he said nonchalantly.
Dragon Lord exited the car and walked to the other side. Like a gentleman, he opened the car door for Princess Amaya.
"I’ll drop you home," his voice was very gentle.
Princess Amaya remained seated and did not move. Dragon Lord shrugged his shoulders. He went to the back, lifted the door, and effortlessly took out his motorbike.
The princess finally understood his intention. She got out of the car and walked toward the back of the SUV, where Dragon Lord had already put on his helmet and was handling her helmet.
However, before the Princess could touch the helmet, Dragon Lord held her wrist with his free hand and pulled her a little closer. He helped her put on the helmet.
Princess Amaya was she was about to push him away when he pulled back and started the motorbike’s engine.
"Hop on, Princess."
Princess Amaya had no choice but to climb the motorcycle and sit at the back, her hands circling his firm waist.
Her nostrils detected a faint yet familiar scent, barely perceptible but unmistakable nonetheless.
Princess Amaya was stunned.
