Rebirth: A Second chance at life-Chapter 30
Chapter 30: 30
Sebastian’s gaze flickered toward Aurora, studying her with quiet intrigue.
The moment her senses picked up on his stare, she turned away, her attention shifting to the passing city lights outside the window, feigning indifference. Yet, Sebastian didn’t miss the subtle detail—the slight flush creeping up the tip of her ear... amusement flickering in his eyes.
He leaned back, a ghost of a smirk playing at his lips, but said nothing. Instead, he simply watched as she remained lost in thought, pretending his presence didn’t exist.
Noticing his lingering stare, she finally sighed and turned slightly toward him.
"Mr. Harper, is there something troubling you?" she asked, her tone calm yet carrying a hint of impatience.
Sebastian was momentarily taken aback, his composure faltering for just a fraction of a second. With a faint, almost imperceptible cough, he quickly looked away, masking the slip in his usually controlled demeanor.
But he recovered just as fast.
His expression smoothed into its usual unreadable calm as he leaned back slightly, his gaze once again settling on her. This time, however, he took his time—truly observing her.
Her sharp, intimidating gaze met his, unwavering, as if she had seen through every layer of indifference he wore. Her skin was soft, luminous under the dim city lights, and her lips—sculpted with an effortless perfection—parted ever so slightly, as if she were about to speak.
But it was her eyes that held him captive.
Deep amber, rich and hypnotic, they carried an intensity that made it seem as though she held the entire world in the palm of her hand. There was a quiet elegance about her, an aura that was neither forced nor demanding—yet impossible to ignore.
Sebastian had met many women, but none quite like her.
"I was just wondering," he said smoothly, his deep voice carrying a trace of curiosity, "will you be able to focus completely on treating Jenny when you seem to have... trouble elsewhere?"
His eyes gleamed with meaning as he added, "Particularly with your husband?"
"Ex-husband, Mr. Harper," Aurora corrected him smoothly, turning her gaze back to the window.
A hint of amusement flickered in her eyes as she continued, her voice calm yet laced with quiet disdain. "And as for them... they’re nothing more than a bunch of flies—insignificant and bothersome, but hardly worth my attention anymore."
Sebastian felt a thrill of intrigue ripple through him.
According to the reports, Aurora had been hopelessly in love with Alexander for the past ten years—chasing after him, enduring his cruelty, and clinging to a marriage that gave her nothing but humiliation.
And yet, within a single year of marriage, she now spoke of him with nothing but indifference, as if he were nothing more than an afterthought.
Fascinating.
Leaning back, Sebastian studied her carefully, his amusement deepening. Just what changed to make her this way?
Sebastian’s expression remained composed, but a flicker of something unreadable passed through his eyes.
"Apologies, I didn’t know about your divorce," he said smoothly.
Yet, for some reason, he felt an unexpected sense of relief upon hearing it.
Strange.
He wasn’t the type to concern himself with another’s personal affairs, especially not something as trivial as a failed marriage. And yet, knowing Aurora was no longer tied to Alexander left him... oddly satisfied.
Liam could hardly believe his eyes. From the very start, he had been watching in stunned silence, struggling to process the sight before him.
"None that matter," Aurora replied smoothly, her tone laced with indifference.
There was no hesitation, no lingering emotion—just a simple, final statement that left no room for further discussion. It was clear she had no intention of dwelling on the past.
Is the ice monster... actually talking to a woman?
Sebastian Harper—the man who had built an impenetrable wall around himself, who regarded women as nothing more than insignificant nuisances—was not only engaging in a conversation but had gone so far as to help Miss Smith.
Unbelievable.
His boss had always kept his distance, treating any form of interaction with the opposite sex as an unnecessary hassle. Women were nothing but background noise to him—easily dismissed, effortlessly ignored. He had seen countless socialites try to flirt, only to be met with a cold stare that sent them running.
And yet, here he was, not just tolerating Aurora’s presence but actually speaking to her—conversing, observing, and even assisting her without a second thought.
Liam nearly pinched himself.
Liam subtly glanced at the rearview mirror, his gaze flickering toward Aurora.
Well, she was beautiful now—there was no denying that. But from the pictures he had seen earlier, she had been far from it. Back then, she was heavier, timid, and entirely unremarkable. Though she had shed some of the weight and now carried herself with an air of quiet confidence, she still didn’t seem like someone worthy of standing beside his boss.
Sure, she was the godly doctor, a genius in her own right, but Boss deserves someone who can match his power, someone who can rule the world at his side.
And also... she’s barely nineteen, isn’t she?
Liam’s thoughts spiraled as he stole another glance at Sebastian, who remained calm and unreadable as ever.
Oh, Boss, what are you thinking?
You’re not a monster, are you?
Liam nearly shuddered at the absurdity of his own thoughts.
Look at you—you’re old enough for her to call you ’Uncle!’
The rest of the ride remained cloaked in silence, neither of them speaking as the city lights blurred past. Soon, the car pulled up in front of Azure Mansion, its grand structure standing tall against the night.
Aurora had never intended to reveal her abode to anyone, preferring to keep her sanctuary hidden from prying eyes. But considering Jenny would be coming here tomorrow anyway, it hardly mattered now. Besides, she couldn’t quite explain why she felt an inexplicable connection to the girl.
Her gaze shifted toward Sebastian, who remained composed beside her, his presence neither overbearing nor intrusive.
Well... he’s not my enemy, she mused.
For a brief second, something flickered in her amber eyes—something unreadable, enigmatic.
But whatever it was, it remained a mystery, even to her.
Sebastian’s gaze flickered toward the towering structure ahead, his thoughts narrowing in suspicion.
Is she really living here?
The mansion loomed in the dim glow of the streetlights, its vast yet eerily silent presence giving off an almost haunted aura. The place seemed abandoned—lifeless, shrouded in mystery.
Or is she deliberately misleading us?
He wouldn’t put it past her to conceal her real address. But then again, looking at the desolate surroundings, she wouldn’t be foolish enough to bring them here if this wasn’t truly her home.
Snapping out of his thoughts, his attention shifted back to Aurora just as she spoke...
Thanks Mr Harper, I would be going now. Don’t forget to bring Jenny here. With that she bid goodbye and went to her home.
Sebastian watched in silence as Aurora’s figure disappeared beyond the gates, swallowed by the shadows of her mansion. Even after she was out of sight, he remained still, his thoughts lingering longer than they should.
After what felt like an eternity, he finally exhaled and ordered his driver to go.
Today had been nothing short of exhausting.
The thought of Jenny being poisoned under his own care unsettled him, a rare sense of unease creeping into his otherwise unshakable mind. It wasn’t just an attack—it was a direct provocation. Someone had dared to move against him, and that alone was unacceptable.
His expression darkened as he shifted his gaze toward Liam, who sat in the passenger seat. freewēbnoveℓ.com
"Find out who’s behind this," Sebastian ordered, his voice deceptively calm, yet carrying a chilling edge. "I want answers as soon as possible. And..." He exhaled slowly, his fingers tapping against his knee. "Look into where Jenny can stay for now."
He could no longer afford to trust anyone—not until he had the culprit in his grasp.
