Chapter 596: Chapter 309: Shi Fengju Returns Home (Part 2)

Shi Fengming can’t bear to hear words like "before" and "past," especially from his wife’s mouth. When she mentioned such words, he felt like he had a thousand words, yet none could leave his lips. After a pause, he said: "I know you’re anxious, but this matter can’t be rushed! Since the housekeeper has already gone personally, could he possibly make a mistake? I think, it won’t be long before elder brother returns, and then I will accompany him. It will be better to have someone to watch over him on the way."

Zhou Jingyi thought it over and felt it made sense, and thus nodded: "That’s the best course! With you accompanying big brother, everyone at the mansion can feel more at ease! Big brother is so good to his wife, in case he gets too upset and acts impulsively, you’d be able to talk him down."

"That’s what I intended too!" Shi Fengming nodded, but then said with a touch of sourness: "Jingyi, am I better to you than brother is to his wife?"

Zhou Jingyi gave him a glance, irritated and flustered: "Who is in the mood to discuss this with you! I just hope sister-in-law can return safely and soon!"

Shi Fengming was speechless, thinking how are these two matters at all directly related? But you refuse to answer me? It doesn’t matter; one day you will answer me.

Shi Fengju had just arrived in the capital for a mere two days when he received the letter, thinking it was about his mother, he became extremely anxious and quickly pressed for details from the messenger.

The messenger reassured him several times that Mrs. Wang was unharmed, causing Shi Fengju to be relieved. However, he fell into a different kind of unease, because the letter was not written by Sang Wan, and Sang Wan hadn’t sent him a single word. Something was definitely wrong.

He then questioned the messenger about what exactly had happened in the household. Despite the messenger being clever and having received repeated instructions from Mrs. Wang and Gu Fangzi, he was no match for Shi Fengju. With a bit of pressure, Shi Fengju made him spill everything.

Upon hearing the news, Shi Fengju was completely stunned, his mind and heart turning blank and bewildered; he couldn’t recover his senses for quite some time, leaving him feeling utterly hollow and lost!

His wife, his Miss Wan, had actually disappeared, her life and whereabouts unknown!

Shi Fengju was shocked and furious, interrogating the messenger with an icy face for specifics. The messenger truly didn’t know any more details; pressed beyond what he could bear, he could only kowtow and beg for mercy. Seeing that he could gain no more information, Shi Fengju felt a bitter hatred, and immediately, he took Chang Huan and four or five of his men, rode fast horses, and rushed towards home day and night without stopping. He returned to the estate in just five days.

After lunch that day, Mrs. Wang was walking along the corridor under Gu Fangzi’s company to digest her meal, listening to her diverting idle talk when suddenly, a maid reported that the young master had returned. Both were shocked and exchanged a look: So soon?

Mrs. Wang had no time for further instructions; Shi Fengju had already burst in. His dark blue gown was covered in dust from his hurried travel, his complexion was ashen, his expression haggard, and his lips cracked. He appeared so abruptly before Mrs. Wang.

Seeing him in this state, Mrs. Wang’s tears immediately fell, and she approached with a trembling voice: "Fengju! Fengju! How did you become like this! What on earth happened to you! What happened!"

"Mother!" Shi Fengju held some resentment inside, his gaze somewhat cold as he supported Mrs. Wang and said impassively: "I’m fine, but what exactly happened? How is Miss Wan? Have they found her?"

"Big cousin, you should change and wash up first, you look—"

"Shut up!" Shi Fengju didn’t even glance at Gu Fangzi, still staring at Mrs. Wang, his eyes filled with hope, "Mother, tell me, have they found Miss Wan?" 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

Mrs. Wang opened her mouth, but the words she had agonizingly rehearsed over several days just could not be uttered; she felt a sharp pain in her heart. Trembling, she touched Shi Fengju’s face with her hand, and tears streamed down uncontrollably.

"Auntie!" Gu Fangzi quickly came closer, saying sorrowfully: "Big cousin, auntie is also—"

"Didn’t you hear when I told you to shut up?" Shi Fengju’s gaze was ice-cold towards her, "Get out!"

"Big cousin..."

"I told you to get out. Do I need to have someone escort you before you’ll leave?" Shi Fengju’s tone was very calm but his countenance and demeanor were anything but.

Gu Fangzi felt a chill rise from her feet to her crown, instinctively letting go and slowly backing away. She had never seen Shi Fengju like this before. The aura he exuded was enough to make one go mad!

Shi Fengju continued to look at Mrs. Wang, his voice calm but empty, "Mother, what exactly happened to Miss Wan? Has she come back? Is her injury severe? I told her to take good care of herself, is this how she cares for herself! How can she treat me like this!"

"It’s my fault, all my fault!" Mrs. Wang could no longer hold back her tears and began crying bitterly, "Fengju, blame me, it’s my fault for letting her leave the house! Fengju, blame me!"

"Young master!" Mrs. Jiang was also a little scared, carefully stepping forward to support the sobbing Mrs. Wang, sighing to Shi Fengju: "Madam has been very upset about this affair, she hasn’t had a good day since it happened! Please don’t—"

"So you’re saying, there’s still no news of Miss Wan?" Shi Fengju let go of Mrs. Wang, feeling powerless, and asked.

Meeting his despairingly tranquil gaze, Mrs. Jiang couldn’t bear it and averted her gaze unwilling to meet his eyes, she bit her lip and nodded: "Yes, there’s still no news of the lady..."

Shi Fengju fell silent for a moment, nodded his head, and turned to leave.

"Fengju! Fengju!" Mrs. Wang cried out: "Where are you going! Where are you going! Do you hate mother? Fengju!"

Without looking back, Shi Fengju paused, shook his head, and spoke softly: "How could I hate you? You are my mother. I’m fine; I’m just a bit tired. I’ll rest at Ningyuan for a while, don’t let anyone disturb me."

Without waiting for Mrs. Wang to reply, he walked away from the main courtyard.
