Chapter 34 -34: Had a Stomachache
Both of them looked at Mei Mengzhen handing over the digestive tablets, quite speechless, waving their hands, “We just need to sit for a while and we’ll be fine. Oh, right, where did you buy these from? It’s my first time eating such delicious corn and sweet potatoes,” Fan Tianhua asked.
Mei Mengzhen appeared nonchalant, “I bought them just up front. It’s the store we talked about this morning. I also bought a lot of vegetables. How about it, Sister Tianhua, why don’t you stay here, too? You can try my cooking tomorrow?”
Fan Tianhua wasn’t someone who had a big appetite for food, but today’s two dishes completely conquered her taste buds. Although having an extra person to eat means adding a burden to her cousin’s family.
One must never think that having an additional person is just an extra mouth to feed. Even though she was young, she knew that many families barely made enough money to get by. If you eat an extra bite at someone else’s home today, they would have to eat one less bite tomorrow. One bite might not seem like much, but it can add up. Don’t think that families nowadays are not that strapped for cash – you just haven’t seen enough. The Mei family is in such hardship. Their parents only left behind 3200 yuan. How long can that last?
However, Fan Tianhua then thought differently. By having a meal there, she could rightly leave some money for her cousin. She didn’t have much money herself, so it wouldn’t be a lot, but having some is better than none.
Therefore, Fan Tianhua happily accepted the invitation, finding a legitimate excuse for her gluttony, “Okay.”
“Sister Tianhua, you’re not going back tonight, are you? Just sleep with me.”
Fan Tianhua had come over with Fan Tianyu to check on how the siblings were doing, but who knew she would eat so much that now she didn’t even feel like she could walk back, “Then, I won’t go back, sorry to bother you.”
“It’s no trouble at all.”
After Fan Tianhua took out her phone from her purse and made a call to Mei Yinan, she formally decided to stay.
The four of them slept until daylight. The next day, when Fan Tianhua woke up, she smelled the fragrance of food. As she went downstairs, she saw Mei Mengzhen busy in the kitchen and asked in surprise, “Why did you get up so early?”
Mei Mengzhen was rinsing goose eggs with water when she was startled by Fan Tianhua’s voice, “Oh my, you scared me to death.”
Fan Tianhua chuckled, “I didn’t do anything. Why did I scare you? Do you always get up this early?”
Mei Mengzhen nodded, “We sleep early so we get up early. Perfect, wake Brother Tianyu up and we can have breakfast.”
At that moment, Fan Tianyu was lying on the bed, spread-eagled, sound asleep. Fan Tianhua couldn’t pass up such a perfect opportunity and pushed the door open, shouting, “Fan Tianyu, get up! Breakfast is ready. What time do you think it is, still sleeping? Hurry up, get up.”
Fan Tianyu’s delightful dream was abruptly ended by Fan Tianhua’s calling, and before even opening his eyes, he threw a pillow towards the source of the noise, hitting Fan Tianhua, “Come on, can’t you be more reasonable? What time is it now?”
“It’s 10 o’clock, and you’re still sleeping.”
The wall clock: …I’m 7:30.
But this act was clearly learned from Mei Yinan, and he’d learned it thoroughly.
It was 10 o’clock and even if Fan Tianyu wanted to sleep more, he couldn’t afford to. After washing up quickly, he went downstairs to find that it was only 7:35 on the wall clock. Without a doubt, the siblings had another fight in her living room until everything was set on the table, at which point Mei Mengzhen interrupted them.
The two stopped without hesitation, coming to the dining table to look at the breakfast spread. Hmm, it did seem quite something indeed.
Mei Mengchen was huffing and puffing as he climbed onto his chair, waiting for Mei Mengzhen to serve his food.
Mei Mengchen’s arms were short; he couldn’t reach the dishes on the table, so Mei Mengzhen usually prepared a divided plate for him, one compartment with rice, and the others with various side dishes.
This was a recent privilege. In the past, his parents would serve him a bowl of rice and side dishes separately, using their own chopsticks to feed him during meals, which she found unhygienic, so she changed it.
With more people today, breakfast couldn’t be as simplistic as usual. She made plain porridge, using rice bought from the supermarket but cooked with Spiritual Spring Water for a better texture. Having porridge meant there needed to be side dishes. She stir-fried a dish of shredded potatoes—a super large plate of it—and paired it with small pickles processed from the space, along with pieces of layered cake, one goose egg per person. That was breakfast.
“Don’t be shy, breakfast is simple. I’ve just made the stove ready for cooking. We will have chicken soup at noon,” she said.

“Just make something simple, why bother being so formal?”
The two picked up their chopsticks and looked at the food on the table with some emotion. At such a young age, she was bearing burdens she shouldn’t have to bear. More than that, they felt useless themselves, not even knowing how to make such simple meals.
However, this thought disappeared the moment they tasted breakfast.
Can’t help it; the food was too delicious to contemplate anything else.
The siblings were unabashedly wolfing down the food, causing their brother and sister to watch with a bit of dismay. Mei Mengzhen commented lightly, “There’s more porridge in the pot. If it’s not enough, you can get more.”
After saying this, she started scraping off Mei Mengchen’s egg. She ate the egg white directly but mashed the yolk into the porridge for easier swallowing to avoid choking. Mengchen would take a while to consume one whole yolk, “All right, you eat now.”
After saying this, when the siblings got up for their second bowl of porridge, she had just started on her first bowl.
In half an hour, breakfast was completely devoured. The siblings were once again so full they leaned on the sofa, not wanting to move an inch, “I can’t do this. I’ve just digested yesterday’s food, and now I’m stuffed again. Zhenzhen, I really didn’t expect you to have such good cooking skills.”
“No, it’s not about my cooking skills. It’s the vegetarian food that’s delicious. These dishes were bought along with yesterday’s corn sweet potatoes. I didn’t add much seasoning, as Chenchen doesn’t eat spicy. So I just used salt, pepper, and vinegar.” She hadn’t added chicken essence or MSG.
Fan Tianhua wanted to get up to wash the dishes, but Mei Mengzhen immediately stopped her, “Zhenzhen, don’t move. Who lets you cook and then wash dishes? We didn’t come here to add to your burden.”
Fan Tianyu nodded repeatedly, “Today you’re actually being observant. Not bad, not bad.”
“Of course it’s not bad. I might have some insight, but you don’t. I stopped her to let you wash. Do you expect me to do it?” Fan Tianhua retorted.
“I’ve had enough.” Fan Tianyu sat up, trying to be serious, intending to reason with Fan Tianhua, but she wasn’t having any of it. The siblings’ bickering went on, almost leading to another fight. Mei Mengzhen felt it was noisy and quickly intervened, “Alright, you’re too full to stand up now. I’ll go wash the dishes. You can do the lunch dishes, okay?”
“No problem.” The siblings agreed in unison, while Mei Mengzhen suspected they were doing it on purpose, but she had no proof.
