Chapter 56 -56 getting a driving license (3/10)
Amid the crying and fussing of children, they were led to their classrooms, and some of the parents who had to go to work left, while the ones who didn’t work perched outside the school, trying to sneak a peek inside the kindergarten. The sight was quite amusing.
Mei Yinan and Fan Tianyu naturally wouldn’t do such a thing. Mei Yinan had to go to work, and Fan Tianyu needed to head back home. His phone had been off since yesterday and he hadn’t turned it on until now. After watching Mei Mengchen go in, the two parted ways.
When Fan Tianyu got home, there wasn’t much to do. It was early, so after washing some fruit, he lay down on the sofa while eating and turned on his phone.
23 missed calls and 45 unread messages appeared before his eyes.
The calls were undoubtedly from those three classmates planning to start a business together, while the messages were about signing contracts and wanting to celebrate together.
Naturally, the messages were full of emotions. Some expressed pity for Fan Tianyu, some mocked him for not cherishing this opportunity, and of course, there were those with a hint of provocation, implying they were already making a fortune and wouldn’t include him in the future.
Fan Tianyu skimmed through the messages without replying. There was no sadness, no anger, not even regret, only the realization that he missed out on the entrepreneurial opportunity and saw these people’s true attitudes toward him. Reading these messages, he somewhat agreed with his sister’s opinion; these people really didn’t seem reliable.
But since others were starting businesses, what should he do? Fan Tianyu lay on the sofa, seriously contemplating his future direction.

When Mei Mengzhen came home at noon, she saw Fan Tianyu, who was deep in thought on the sofa and momentarily zoned out, “Brother Tianyu, what’s up with you?”
Fan Tianyu didn’t move at all. After popping a grape into his mouth, he said, “I’m thinking about my future path.”
“There are many paths to take, and you’re standing at the crossroads of life right now. The choice is important, but how to walk the chosen path is equally significant. Indeed, this issue is worth pondering. However, it’s getting late, don’t you think eating is important too? How about we have lunch first then continue this discussion?”
Fan Tianyu sat up from the sofa, “Alright, let’s eat. You rest a bit, I’ll go get the food.”
“No need, I’ve rested all morning. I actually want to move around now, you lie down for a while.”
“I’ve also been lying down all morning.” However, Mei Mengzhen had already gone to the kitchen and taken the lunch out of the fridge to put in the microwave. He sat up but didn’t move any further.
Once the food was ready, the two sat at the dining table eating their lunch. Both were quite talkative and easily found a topic to chat about.
“Brother Tianyu, do you have a driving license? Since you’ve got nothing else going on, why not take the driving test? You’ll eventually have to do it anyway, so it might as well be now. It won’t conflict with thinking about life while trying for your license.”
Mei Mengzhen felt that figuring out a career path wasn’t something that could be easily sorted out by lying around at home. Better to get out more, perhaps opportunities would emerge. Besides, getting a driving license wasn’t something trivial; knowing how to drive was a skill after all, and in the worst-case scenario, you could always drive for Didi.
Of course, Didi didn’t exist in 2007, but that didn’t mean it wouldn’t in the future.
Mei Mengzhen’s suggestion was a wake-up call. Indeed, Tianyu usually got up late and lazily found things to do in the afternoons, so he hadn’t felt bored so far. But after spending just one morning at home, he felt an overwhelming sense of tedium. The proposal to get a driving license was actually a good idea. It wouldn’t hinder his planning for the future and would provide him with a new skill.
“I remember there’s a driving school just ahead of us. I’ll go check it out this afternoon. If it’s the right place, I’ll sign up on the spot. Hey, you’re quite sharp. If I just sit at home, it won’t be long before my parents start nagging, but if I’m learning to drive, it’ll shut them up.”
It’s not that he didn’t want to work; he just didn’t want his family worrying over minor things.
Mei Mengzhen laughed, mainly because she also planned to get her license, just not now, but after her college entrance exam. That’s why she had thought of suggesting Tianyu get his driving license.
After lunch, Mei Mengzhen returned to school, and Fan Tianyu went to the driving school.
After making inquiries at the driving school, Fan Tianyu paid the tuition on the spot and later that night reported back to his parents.
Fan Hongwei and Mei Yinan didn’t say much this time. In particular, Mei Yinan’s thoughts were surprisingly similar to Mei Mengzhen’s, “It’s good for you to learn a skill, so you can always drive a taxi if things don’t pan out.”
A taxi is just another word for a cab, which is exactly like the Didi mentioned by Mei Mengzhen, but the difference was that Mengzhen hadn’t voiced it out loud, while Yinan didn’t hesitate to say it in front of her son.
Fan Tianyu was speechless, “Seriously, am I that unambitious to start driving a cab right after graduation from college?”
Of course, there’s no shame in any profession, and it’s not that driving a cab is bad. It’s just that he felt he should be striving for a few more years after college graduation before resorting to it, which was frustrating.
“I didn’t tell you to drive a taxi now. I said you can consider it if nothing else works out. Although, it’s almost time already,” Mei Yinan stated matter-of-factly.
“That’s the same thing. Can’t you be a little hopeful about my future?”
Fan Hongwei interjected in a timely manner, “Alright, your decision to get your license is a good one. You’re not working, so how much money can you have? I’ll reimburse you for the driving school fees.”
Fan Tianyu immediately brightened up, “Thanks, Dad.”
With the tuition reimbursed, Fan Tianyu hardly kept the little money he had left. But since he was learning to drive, which certainly wasn’t a quick process, he handed over the 3,000 yuan of living expenses that Mei Yinan had prepared to Mei Mengzhen.
“Here, take this. It’s my living expenses. I guess I’ll stay until I get my license, and definitely have to pay for this period.”
Mei Mengzhen naturally refused, “No need, you don’t eat that much. It’s just an extra pair of chopsticks, how can I accept money for that?”
Fan Tianyu shoved the money into Mei Mengzhen’s hand, “Take it. It’s from my mom. If you don’t, they’ll feel awkward asking you for vegetables later. Besides, my appetite is no joke.”
He knew he ate a lot.
Mei Mengzhen hesitated and pushed the money back. She didn’t really need the money; whether she took the 3,000 yuan or not didn’t matter. But Tianyu offered a practical convenience by picking up and dropping off Mengchen, which made her feel embarrassed to accept the money as she felt she was benefiting from it.
Seeing Mei Mengzhen’s indecision, Fan Tianyu turned and walked away, “Keep it. Just cook something nice for me in return,” he said without giving her the chance to refuse, and retreated to his room.
“Hey.” Seeing him evade so quickly left Mengzhen with no choice but to accept the money. She thought it over and decided she could always give back by sending extra vegetables their way later. Then she went upstairs with Mengchen.
The pleasant brother-sister chat time began. Mei Mengzhen soothed her brother to bed, and then they talked about the day’s events, mostly listening to Mengchen recount the amusing stories from kindergarten.
