Chapter 66 -66: Knocking Off After Selling Out (3/3)
After looking around, Fan Tianyu took a liking to a small Jinbei van. The models of Jinbei varied, as did their prices, generally ranging from 30,000 to 60,000 yuan.
According to Tianyu’s thinking, he should just pick the cheapest one, which cost 33,000 yuan when he asked, saving 17,000 yuan from his original budget of 50,000 yuan.
On the other hand, the couple thought since they were buying it, it wouldn’t just be used for deliveries; they’d need it to transport people comfortably too. After a lengthy discussion, they decided on a van priced at 45,000 yuan.

The group paid for the van on the spot and drove away.
As for Tianyu’s driving skills, the couple didn’t have much confidence since he’d only had his driver’s license for a few days. Mei Yinan asked somewhat fearfully, “Are you sure you can handle it?”
Tianyu buckled his seatbelt and said, “If I can’t handle it, how do you plan to get this car home? Both you and dad don’t have driver’s licenses, so are you thinking of pushing it back?”
“No, what I meant was you drive the car back, and your dad and I will take the bus.” Mei Yinan said emotionlessly, and she really meant it.
Indeed, she had been holding back all the way, and now that the car was bought and only their family of three was present, Mei Yinan finally asked, “You’re doing this business with Zhenzhen, so how do you guys split the money, or are you paying her a salary?”
Fan Hongwei replied, “Why are you asking this? It’s their own business, and they’ll sort it out themselves.”
“I’m just worried that when relatives do business together, uneven profit sharing could affect their relationship later.” Mei Yinan said, concerned but also very curious about how they were splitting the money.
Tianyu didn’t hide anything, “Actually, at first I was planning on splitting it 50/50, half for me and half for Zhenzhen, since she made the connections. But Zhenzhen didn’t want that. Later, she suggested a 1/9 split, which I also didn’t agree with. Zhenzhen might not have sold vegetables but has contributed a lot of effort. After some more arguing, we finally settled on a 3/7 split, with 7 for me and 3 for her, just like she said — I do more running around every day, so it’s fair for me to take a bigger share.”
The couple had no objections to this arrangement; they were content that the two kids could make some pocket money, which would give them some financial peace of mind.
Fan Hongwei agreed, “You’re doing it right. Zhenzhen is very smart, and by following her, you might learn a lot.”
Tianyu, a bit embarrassed, said, “I’ve already learned quite a bit. You have no idea. Zhenzhen only set up her stall for a few days but got along incredibly well with the other vendors. As we pushed the cart along, everyone recognized her and greeted us. The vegetables had just been unloaded, and people immediately gathered around to buy. If you have time this weekend, you really should come and check out the situation. This morning, I was totally amazed.”
His words, full of excitement, truly piqued the interest of the couple. “Alright, on Saturday, your mom and I will come and help you out.”
“That would be great.”
As soon as Tianyu finished speaking, the van started moving out of the shop, and the couple immediately shut their mouths, fearing that any words might distract their son who was new to driving.
Meanwhile, it was Tianyu’s first time driving on the road, and he concentrated intensely, not noticing his parents’ sudden silence.
Xincheng wasn’t that big. From the time they left the house, to viewing and purchasing the car, to returning home, it didn’t take much time at all. They got back just in time to prepare for dinner.
Mengzhen heard them arrive and called Mengchen to greet them. When they opened the door, indeed there was Tianyu in the driver’s seat, beaming with excitement and grinning from ear to ear.
Seeing the Mei siblings coming out, Tianyu said excitedly, “How about it? The van is great, isn’t it? I’ve looked over it and our big crates can be stacked in two layers. If we put the back seats down, we can fit about eight big crates, and even squeeze a few small ones into the gaps. If I run two to three trips a day, I’m going to make a killing.”
Mengzhen looked it over and agreed that it could hold as many boxes as Tianyu said. “This van is good; it has a lot of space inside.”
“Yeah, the smaller ones only cost a little over 30,000, but my mom suggested buying a better one. This one’s a bit nicer and bigger, but it cost over 40,000, which really hurt my wallet,” Tianyu said while dramatically clutching at his heart.
“But Tianyu, if you can sell out three or four times a day as you mentioned, then in two months, no, in one month, couldn’t you have earned that money back?” Mengzhen’s mind was quickly calculating, wondering whether her savings would be enough not just for the down payment, but perhaps even to buy the van outright.
The siblings felt excited at the thought. “If that were true, it would be amazing.”
Seeing their optimistic imaginations, Fan Hongwei immediately said, “Your ideas are too idealistic. There’s a big difference between reality and your expectations.” He then walked into the house, and after parking the van, Tianyu followed his father inside.
Tianyu asked, “Dad, why did you say our ideas are too idealistic? You really haven’t seen how bustling the vegetable selling is.”
“I’ve eaten those vegetables before, so of course I know they’re good. But there’s one thing, there are only so many people here, and there’s only so much produce they need. If I ate this today, would I want to eat it again tomorrow? If I ate it for a month, would I want to eat it for another month? After you’ve set up the stall for a few days, there won’t be so many people, and your daily income will only keep decreasing.”
Fan Hongwei’s point of view was based on normal business, but the situation at Mengzhen’s stand was different. “Their farm delivers a different variety every day, not just vegetables but fruits, meat — everything. You were talking about selling radishes; even if I sold radishes for a month straight, the business could decline. But we have other vegetables. Today radishes, tomorrow cabbages. As long as we frequently change the types, this problem won’t occur.”
Fan Hongwei nodded, “That makes sense. Since you’re just starting, I won’t dampen your enthusiasm.”
When it came to business, Mei Yinan asked, “When are you starting to sell? The vendors start very early. So in the future, should I pick up and drop off Chenchen?”
Mengchen looked at Tianyu and then at Yinan but didn’t say anything. He was very sensible. Although Aunt Mei may not have liked his sister, she did like Chenchen. As his sister said, it’s a good thing to be favored by her.
Tianyu thought for a moment, “I don’t think we need to start that early. Let me drop off Chenchen first, and we’ll see after a couple of days.”
Yinan snorted coldly, “People start selling veggies at five in the morning. Chenchen goes to school at eight. What time do you plan on starting to sell?”
“Around 9 o’clock should be fine. No need to get up so early, and going too early wouldn’t mean more veggies to sell,” Tianyu said, becoming more convinced of his own reasoning. “Let’s make it 9 o’clock. I’ll start work at 9, and once sold out, I’ll clock off.”
Everyone chorused a dismissive “Haha” before dispersing to do other things.
Mengzhen also found time to finish her homework, completing it all just before dinner.
For dinner, they enjoyed duck soup and braised pig’s trotters, and Mengzhen suddenly thought of something, “Brother Tianyu, you’re going to need to buy a scale for selling vegetables, right?”
