Li Yunqiao hurried home, knocked on the door, and saw a woman wearing an apron smiling as she opened the door for him.

This was a scene he had never experienced before. Although Liang Caifeng used to cook, it was always the children who opened the door.

Looking at the woman who was charmingly gazing at him, Li Yunqiao hesitated for a moment.

"Brother Li, when are the kids coming back?"

The voice broke Li Yunqiao’s trance. "They’ll be home soon too. I forgot to tell you at noon, we all get off work at six and are home by about half past six."

Lu Fengzhen looked at Li Yunqiao as he pushed the cart in and immediately closed the door, leaving it unlocked as people would soon be back from work.

She ran back to the kitchen, currently mixing the mashed garlic. The family provided good ingredients, including sesame oil, so Lu Fengzhen added sesame oil, soy sauce, and a bit of vinegar to the garlic mash.

The stove was boiling water, which was then poured out. She heated some bean oil and poured it over the chopped chili peppers, instantly filling the kitchen with aroma.

Li Yunqiao washed up in the bathroom. After coming out, he could smell the fragrant chili and instinctively walked into the kitchen.

He saw the woman with the apron turned away, busily working.

Lu Fengzhen turned her head. "Brother Li, I’m still afraid to use this gas stove. Later, keep an eye on me; using the stove is too slow for cooking dumplings, they’re practically soaked instead of cooked."

"Alright, I’ll cook the dumplings later."

Since Li Yunqiao had told Lu Fengzhen about the power of the gas stove at noon, she hadn’t dared to use it.

She carried the garlic mash and chili oil to the dining table, and returned to bring the essential bean paste and pickled red vegetables.

Having lived by herself for so many years, she unconsciously prepared lesser quantities, but the dishes still looked quite delicate.

Li Yunqiao returned to his room to change clothes. By the time he came out, his son and daughter-in-law were already home.

"Come, let me introduce you. This is Lu Fengzhen, you can call her Aunt Lu from now on. Fengzhen, this is my eldest son Hong Lin and daughter-in-law Zheng Lihong."

Lu Fengzhen shyly greeted the two. "I’ll go cook the dumplings."

"I’ll handle it, you just watch. This gas stove has a big flame, it’s very dangerous, and if you’re not proficient in using it, try to use it less."

Lu Fengzhen nodded. "I’ll just use the stove."

The young couple washed up a bit and went upstairs to change clothes.

"Hong Lin, Aunt Lu looks too young. She doesn’t even seem twenty-eight."

"Hmm, but it’s correct. She’s from the nearby village. I heard her cousin gets along well with our second uncle. Let’s observe slowly."

"Our room’s been tidied up."

"Dad probably instructed her. At least it looks clean and industrious."

The couple knew the dumplings were being cooked, so they didn’t linger, and went downstairs after changing.

Being cabbage-stuffed, they cooked quickly. When the couple came down, Lu Fengzhen was already serving the dumplings.

It had been a long time since they had dumplings. With work consuming the day, they’d just want to rest after returning, thus opting for easy meals.

Li Yunqiao carried out the dumpling soup. "Fengzhen, join us for dinner. There’s nothing formal at our home, just treat it as your home."

"Alright." Lu Fengzhen sat down cautiously. The four began their meal.

Zheng Lihong ate a dumpling, her eyes lighting up immediately. Though they were just stuffed with cabbage, the taste was well-adjusted.

"Aunt Lu, these dumplings are quite delicious."

Lu Fengzhen blushed. "I just made them according to my taste."

Li Yunqiao felt at ease eating this meal, especially with the garlic mash and a bit of chili oil used for dipping the dumplings—it was very appetizing.

After the meal, each of the four drank a bowl of dumpling soup. Hong Lin wanted to clear the table, but Lu Fengzhen refused.

"Hong Lin, you guys worked all day, let me handle this."

The family of three sat in the living room. "What do you think?"

"Everything looks clean and tidy, and she seems genuine. Dad, I complimented her earlier, and her face turned red." Zheng Lihong found Lu Fengzhen likable.

"She seems fine to me too."

"Let’s observe slowly. If there’s anything you’re unhappy with, just say it. It’s important for everyone to get along."

They nodded. By this time, Lu Fengzhen had cleaned up the dining room and kitchen.

Seeing the family of three in the living room, she was unsure of what to do. Suddenly, she remembered she should ask if there were anything they didn’t eat or were taboo—her mother had repeatedly emphasized this.

Li Yunqiao saw Lu Fengzhen approaching. "Sit down."

"Brother Li, I just wanted to ask if there’s anything you don’t eat, or any taboos, so I can be careful when cooking."

"I’m fine with anything."

Hong Lin and Zheng Lihong felt the same—they didn’t have the luxury to be picky now. Being able to eat their fill was very satisfying.

"What time do you leave for work tomorrow morning? And what do you want for breakfast?"

"Tomorrow morning we leave at seven. You can decide on breakfast, but prepare something fine for Lihong; anything works for us."

Lu Fengzhen understood, stood up, and left.

"You two should go rest upstairs. Lihong, shall we arrange a room for you on the first floor? Is climbing the stairs tiring?"

"Alright, I don’t want to keep going up and down stairs, constantly being cautious."

"Okay, tell Fengzhen tomorrow."

Li Yunqiao entered his room and found it had been tidied. He ran his finger along the bedside table, finding no dust—it had been cleaned thoroughly.

He sat down to continue working but felt he had something on his mind.

Lu Fengzhen returned to her room, sat on the bed, feeling quite unaccustomed. Though the room was warm, the bed was too cold. It was truly uncomfortable. When she had the chance, she’d go to the hospital for two bottles, fill them with hot water, and warm the bed.

After a while, she noticed it was quiet outside, so she cautiously went out. She took her basin to the kitchen to pour hot water—she had to wash or she’d be unable to sleep.

Li Yunqiao heard the sound outside, noticing how cautious it was. He smiled and shook his head, continuing to read his files.

Later that night, Li Yunqiao got up to stretch, went to the yard to use the bathroom, then returned to the kitchen to pour hot water, covered the stove, washed his hands, face, and feet before going back to rest.

The next morning, Lu Fengzhen got up, saw it was already half past five, hurried back to her room, dressed, and planned to cook breakfast well. She thought of making pancakes. She first opened the stove to boil water for later washing up.

She found a clay pot, deciding to make corn grits porridge, adding sweet potatoes for sweetness. When the water boiled, she scalded the dough and cooked the porridge.

By half-past six, the family of three smelled the aroma of food.

Having pancakes for breakfast made Zheng Lihong quite satisfied.
