Chapter 101: Lie Detector

The male officer frowned when he heard this.

He and the female officer had worked together since before the apocalypse.

Because of this, he knew her character and trusted her conclusions.

However, this case was too strange and involved important people.

Considering that, he didn’t dare to be careless so he shook his head before speaking.

"Let’s wait for the lie detector." He said.

"You..., did you?" The female asked and the male officer nodded.

"He will be here in a moment."

Before the apocalypse, the lie detector was a machine.

However, in the early days, one of the police officers awakened a spiritual ability that was akin to a lie detector.

As long as the person was around, no one could get away with a lie.

"You may be right." The female office nodded in agreement.

When she thought about it, she felt her colleague was right.

In this case, they couldn’t afford mistakes or ambiguities.

Since they had a lie detector, it was best to use it to ensure that the children were not lying.

Ten minutes later, a group of three approached the bungalow.

Among the three was a middle-aged man with a strict haircut, narrow eyes, and wearing a rigid suit.

At a glance, he looked like a bureaucrat who did everything by the book.

"He is here." The female officer said and stepped forward to welcome the group.

"Officer Wang, thank you for your help." She said.

"Are these the suspects?" Wang Fang asked, looking at the children.

However, he didn’t wait for an answer and after the brief look, he turned to the male officer.

"I need a room." He said.

"Please follow me." The female said, leading the group to a relatively clean room in the bungalow.

"Do we need to separate them?" The male police officer asked.

"No need." Wang Fang said and pointed at one of the children.

"Tell me what happened." He ordered.

Hearing this, the child trembled and looked at the other children.

However, the others were also terrified and were desperately trying to minimise their presence.

"Speak." Wang Fang urged.

"I..., I....," The child stuttered, swallowed, and clenched his hands.

A moment later, he bit his lip and forcibly suppressed his anxiety.

"I went to sleep one day and found myself here when I woke up." He started.

"There were other children besides me. However, the number kept decreasing every day. I don’t know where the others went."

"Do you know who brought you here?"

The little boy shook his head when he heard the question.

"I only know the people who used to bring food and those who took us to the bathroom. I have never seen anybody else."

"Who rescued you?"

"I don’t know." The little boy shrugged and quickly continued.

"We were all asleep when everything happened."

"Do you know the night shadows?"

"I don’t know."

Wang Fang frowned when he heard this.

From his observation, the little boy was not lying.

However, he was not prepared to conclude anything based on the word of one suspect.

Instead, he questioned the second, third, ..., and eighth.

But in the end, Wang Fang had no choice but to concur with the previous police statement.

"None of them is lying. They don’t know anything." Wang Fang said after he and the other police officers left the room.

"In that case, what should we do with them?" The female police officer asked.

"Let them go." The male answered.

Before the apocalypse, they would have held the children for a few days to confirm their stories.

However, the apocalypse was different.

First, the police station was a small building with barely enough room to hold adult criminals.

If they were asked to also jail the children, the male police officer didn’t know where they would put them.

Most importantly, the police station had a measly allowance for food, drinks, and clothing.

As a result, the station was always in a deficit and the male officer couldn’t guarantee that the children would have something to eat if they were taken back.

Considering that, he felt it was better to cut them loose and let them fend for themselves.

’What a strange time we are living in.’ He thought, feeling a little melancholy.

After all, children were the capital for the future.

Unfortunately, in the apocalypse, children were gold-eating burdens that few could afford.

"You can let them go." Wang Fang also said and the female officer nodded in agreement.

After that, the officer returned to the first room and led the children out of the bungalow.

"The children are out again." One of the crowd said and everyone turned to look.

"It seems they really know nothing." Someone stated.

"How do you know?"

"I overheard what the police officers said before they entered the house. Since the children have been released, it means they are innocent of whatever happened here."

"Poor children! They were almost fed to a zombie."

"Whose children are they? Why didn’t anyone report their kidnapping?"

"Are you stupid? What kind of time are we living in?" Someone snorted and quickly continued.

"Not to mention that their parents may not be alive. Even if they were, they may be happy to get rid of the burden. Why would they report in that situation?"

"Do you think the Fang family will be held accountable?"

"Aren’t you dreaming in broad daylight? Who are the Fang family and who are those children? Do you think the base will give justice to some random children from zone E?"

"You are right." The speaker sighed.

However, he didn’t really care.

After all, everyone had their problems and no one had the spare time to seek justice for some random strangers.

Just when several people were lamenting the absurdity of the world, a commotion broke out and everyone turned to look.

"What’s that child doing?" Someone asked.

At this moment, one of the children, a little girl of about five, was standing in front of a couple.

Seeing the child, the couple looked surprised and were about to question the little girl.

However, before they could do so, the little girl grabbed the man’s trousers and raised her head to smile at him.
