Chapter 316: Chapter 316: Painful Past (23)
Ji Group was in a complete mess under Ji Yiyun’s management, and even racked up a significant amount of debt.
Although Ji Tingyang took over the group, he had never been exposed to these fields and knew nothing about management.
Fortunately, he had the foresight to choose a finance major when he filled out his college application.
So, he managed Ji Group slowly while studying at the university.
The process was even more arduous than he had imagined, and Ji Tingyang had spent several nights in his study with bloodshot eyes.
“You’ve been very busy with your studies lately, haven’t you? The look on your face is terrible, and your eyes are full of blood vessels.”
In the coffee shop, Wen Li looked at the young man sitting opposite her, her tone laced with concern.
Ji Tingyang picked up the coffee beside him and took a sip, his mouth instantly filled with the bitter taste that awakened the mind.
He took a few more sips before replying, “It’s a bit busy, but it doesn’t matter.”
“Even if you’re busy, you need to balance work and rest. Don’t read any more tonight, go to bed early, and…” Wen Li muttered.
Ji Tingyang listened to her nagging, and his vision momentarily became blurred, with the scenery around him seeming to return to the old times.
Lin Xu was leading him, who was still young, back to his room to sleep, when she saw the light still on in the study and knocked on the door.
“Honey, you’re not planning to work all night again, are you?” Lin Xu’s calm voice contained a barely noticeable anger.
Ji Yanli tiredly pinched the bridge of his nose, “There’s some stuff I haven’t finished yet. You take our son to rest first, and I’ll join you later…”
Before he could finish, Lin Xu walked in, poking his chest with her index finger, furiously, “Even if you’re busy, you need to pay attention to rest. You’re not allowed to work tonight. Go back to the room and rest early.”
Ji Yanli: “I…”
Lin Xu: “What ‘I’? If you dare work yourself sick, I’ll take our child and remarry. Believe it or not!”
Ji Yanli’s eyes twinkled with amusement as he hugged her and admitted his fault, “I’m wrong. I won’t work these next few days and will stay at home with you.”
Lin Xu huffed and turned her head away.
A soft laugh escaped from Ji Yanli’s throat as he beckoned to Ji Tingyang at the doorway, “Son, come and coax your mother. Let her stop being mad at Dad.”
Ji Tingyang obediently ran over, hugged Lin Xu’s calves, and said in a soft voice, “Mom, don’t be mad.”
Past memories flashed through his mind again as Ji Tingyang gently caressed the cup with his fingertips.
“Ji Tingyang, are you listening to me?” Wen Li’s voice, tinged with annoyance, stared at him.
Ji Tingyang suddenly snapped back to reality, looking up at her while a slight smile formed, “Yeah, I’m listening.”
Wen Li was struck by the tender look in his eyes, momentarily startled, her cheeks involuntarily warming slightly, “You, you should go to bed early tonight, don’t stay up.”
“Okay.” Ji Tingyang’s eyes still fixed on her.
Wen Li hastily bowed her head, biting her red lip, feeling the atmosphere around them turn subtle.
Just as she was pondering what to say next, Wen Li’s phone rang.
She glanced at the caller ID, her expression stiffening, and immediately hung up.
Perhaps noticing her odd behavior, Ji Tingyang asked, “Whose call was it?”
Wen Li leaned on the table, her expression weary, “It was from my dad, just ignore it.”
Ji Tingyang nodded, without pressing further.
After a while, unable to suppress the frustration building inside her, Wen Li vented to Ji Tingyang.
“My parents can’t earn their own money, yet they want me to marry a wealthy man and then use that money for their retirement and to save for my brother’s marriage.”
“I’m still in high school, and they’ve already started setting me up on dates. As long as the other person is rich, even if he’s blind or divorced with a child, they introduce me—the nerve!”
“Can you believe parents like that even exist?” Wen Li said, then angrily punched the table.
Ji Tingyang looked at her. “Is your family really short on money?”
“Yes, didn’t you see me rushing to part-time jobs after school? I earn all the money for my tuition and living expenses myself,” Wen Li said.
Ji Tingyang thought for a moment. “I could introduce your parents to a well-paying job so they won’t trouble you anymore.”
“You’re going to introduce them?” Wen Li blinked, laughing as if she’d heard a joke. “You sound like a big boss. Don’t forget, I used to bring your breakfast.”
Ji Tingyang: “I…”
“Alright, you don’t need to worry about my family issues. There will always be a way to solve them. If worse comes to worst, I just won’t go home and will stay at school,” said Wen Li with a smile.
She remembered that Ji Tingyang’s situation was even tougher than hers, with both parents deceased and having to take care of his younger siblings by himself. It was best not to trouble him.
Even when it came time to pay the bill, Wen Li rushed to prevent Ji Tingyang from doing so.
Afterwards, Wen Li didn’t dwell on it much and focused intently on her studies at school.
Who would have thought that after a couple of days, she received an exuberant call from her parents?
“Wen Li, your friend is so kind, introducing us to such high-paying jobs. We can make tens of thousands per month, and it’s so easy! You must thank your friend warmly for us,” her father laughed, almost unable to contain his joy over the phone.
“My friend? Which friend?” Wen Li puzzled.
“I only know his surname is Ji, nothing else,” said Father Wen.
Ji?
Could it be Ji Tingyang?
Wen Li was shocked, suddenly remembering the previous conversation about introducing her parents to a high-paying job.
She had thought he was joking, unaware that…
Lost in thought, Wen Li was interrupted again by her cheerful father, “Wen Li, what does your friend’s family do? They seem so wealthy and are so good to you. You definitely need to treasure him. When the time comes to marry into his family, you’ll be set for life.”
There it was again.
Wen Li frowned in annoyance, her tone impatient, “We’re just ordinary friends, don’t talk nonsense. I have a class to attend, so I’m hanging up.”
Wen Li ended the call and after hesitating, called Ji Tingyang.
“Wen Li?” Ji Tingyang seemed surprised to receive her call at this time. “Don’t you have class today?”
“There’s something I need to ask you,” Wen Li said, sounding a bit urgent.
“What is it?”
“My dad mentioned you introduced them to a job that pays really well. Where did you find it, and how could you get them such a job?”
“It’s fine, it’s just a job.”
“How can it be fine? What if you have to pay some price because of this? They aren’t worth you…”
“It’s my family’s company, so it really doesn’t matter.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Wen Li was stunned.
