Chapter 619: Chapter 389 Flickering Candlelights
Fourth Middle School Cafeteria.
The man in a suit delivering a meal to Qi Tianheng attracted the attention of a crowd of students. Qi Tianheng was beaming with pride—who else in the entire cafeteria could enjoy such treatment? He alone, that was who.
This feeling of superiority made him extremely happy.
However, when Geng Lu went to scoop rice from a nearby container, her striking figure and good looks—serving food to a male classmate, no less—suddenly made Qi Tianheng’s happiness taste bland.
He forced a smile and divvied up a few dishes: "Today, I’m treating everyone to lunch."
Yun Tingting’s eyes lit up at his table, and she put on a smile, "Ah, aren’t you eating?"
Qi Tianheng sized up Yun Tingting.
He was a rich second generation with high standards for girls, which was why he initially had eyes for Yang Sheng.
Yun Tingting also had an attractive figure. Every time she played badminton downstairs, she would draw the watchful eyes of many male classmates and was quite well-known within Fourth Middle School.
However, Qi Tianheng was not very interested in her. He always thought Yun Tingting seemed dirty, filled with worldly impurities.
He admired pure girls with a "spiritual energy" like Yang Sheng.
Hearing Yun Tingting’s words, Qi Tianheng showed a smug look and said dismissively, "Eating the same stuff every day, I’ve grown tired of it."
At that comment, the expressions of everyone at the table varied. Nice, you’re tired of it so you’re giving it to us, huh?
Zhao Xiaofeng, the top sycophant, was good at reading the room. Seeing that things were going south, he quickly added:
"Hey, Brother Tian is worried about the cafeteria food not being tasty, and he had someone send over a meal specially. The wrong meal ended up arriving, and lately it’s all been these dishes, of course he’s sick of it. Last time I had braised pork rice, I got so fed up with it even after a few days."
"Come on, you all try it." Zhao Xiaofeng doled out a bit to everyone.
He didn’t even skip Wei Xiu Yuan, to whom he offered two lamb chops.
Wei Xiu Yuan refused expressionlessly: "Jiayi, next time I’ll take you to Nan City for a meal."
...
Lunch ended.
Bai Yuxia didn’t go home and planned to rest at Chen Siyu’s dorm.
Xue Yuantong, though, insisted on going home.
She told Jiang Ning that it was just past twelve, and if she went home to play a game and catch half an hour’s sleep, she could come back to school for class.
Jiang Ning was persuaded and went to the bike shed to get the mountain bike.
The weather was hot, the sun fierce, and the cement floor of the main school walkway seemed to reflect searing light, with heat waves surging up.
There weren’t many students on campus, and Xue Yuantong hopped on the back seat.
Riding out of the school, they passed a dessert shop she liked which had a discount sign hanging up, and she tugged on Jiang Ning’s hem:
"Jiang Ning, stop the bike, stop the bike!"
At her words, Jiang Ning hit the brakes, and with inertia, Xue Yuantong’s head bumped into his back.
Xue Yuantong rubbed her head and yelled, "Jiang Ning, it’s been so long since I’ve had anything to eat!"
Jiang Ning: "Didn’t you just have lunch?"
Xue Yuantong: "I mean dessert."
She hopped off the back seat.
Seeing this, Jiang Ning parked the bike properly and followed her into the shop.
The blackboard read: [New product launched – handcrafted fruit ice cream, limited time 20% off for everyone, 50% off for Fourth Middle School teachers and children under 10 (smiley face)]
Jiang Ning glanced at the blackboard, then at Xue Yuantong, his eyes signaling.
How perfectly in sync were they?
Xue Yuantong understood and walked up to the counter with an air of confidence, looking up at the server and saying:
"Hello, I’m a teacher at Fourth Middle School."
Jiang Ning: ’6.’ novelbuddy.cσ๓
The young girl at the counter was taken aback, looking down at the petite Xue Yuantong, incredulous.
"You’re really a teacher?" she doubted.
Xue Yuantong spoke assuredly, "Indeed, I just look young."
With that, she showed her teacher’s meal card.
It was Teacher Guo Ran’s meal card. Even though the cafeteria had changed, Xue Yuantong had kept it.
In the end, Xue Yuantong got the 50% discount. She spent only 5 yuan and bought a delicious ice cream at a great deal.
On the way back, Xue Yuantong enjoyed the breeze along the river dam and gazed upon the reeds along Huishui River.
"Jiang Ning, am I smart or what?" Sitting in the back, she swung her legs, licked her ice cream, and savored the taste of victory.
Jiang Ning wasn’t sure what to say and could only perfunctorily respond, "Smart."
...
Before the afternoon classes.
Jiang Ning led the groggy Xue Yuantong into the school; she had slept so deeply at noon that she nearly didn’t wake up.
It was Jiang Ning who had to drag her up, place her on the back seat, and bring her to school.
Passing through the corridor, "Brother Gang, Brother Gang," Zhang Chi came rushing from behind. He had been getting along well with Duan Shigang recently, often hanging out together.
Outside the classroom in the hallway was a girl wearing black-framed glasses, walking while absorbed in her phone, oblivious to her surroundings.
Zhang Chi was a rough-and-tumble guy, and his way of greeting his brothers was unmistakably masculine. He leaned in with his shoulder and bumped into Duan Shigang.
Duan Shigang lost his balance and swayed to the side, bumping into the girl next to him.
As a result, with a "smack," the girl’s phone dropped to the ground.
Zhuo Na was in the midst of using her phone, and watched helplessly as it slipped from her grasp. She quickly bent to pick it up, only to find the screen had cracked.
The culprits, Zhang Chi and Duan Shigang, also saw the broken screen.
The atmosphere immediately became tense.
Surrounding students who were passing by stopped to watch the drama unfold.
Jiang Ning and Xue Yuantong entered the classroom and took their seats only to find that Bai Yuxia and Chen Siyu were already there, looking out the window.
Chen Siyu informed him, "Something seems to have happened outside, take a look!"
Zhuo Na adjusted her thick glasses and said to Duan Shigang, "You bumped my phone off, and now the screen is shattered. What are you going to do about it?"
It was a real injustice for Duan Shigang. Even though he was the one who made the bump, it was because of Zhang Chi’s push.
He turned his head intending to discuss with Zhang Chi.
After all, replacing a broken screen wouldn’t be cheap; it could easily cost a hundred yuan or more, and he didn’t want to be the one footing the bill for this mishap.
Zhang Chi, hearing this, was hardly willing.
