Chapter 536: Who could it be

Kathrine couldn’t help but smile. "Who knows, maybe by doing so I can finally win his heart," she teased lightly.

She expected him to roll his eyes or laugh it off.

Instead, Ethan scowled.

"There is no need for you to win his heart," he said bluntly. "You’ve already won mine, and that’s enough. We don’t need his blessing."

There was no hesitation in his voice. No softness. Only firm conviction.

Kathrine’s smile faltered slightly.

She knew Ethan’s feelings toward his father were complicated, but hearing the cold finality in his tone still surprised her.

Growing up, Ethan had never really had a father in the emotional sense. Marcus Emerson had always been present physically, but never truly there. His presence had been more like a shadow that loomed over Ethan’s life, shaping his future without ever understanding his heart.

Marcus had one goal. To prepare Ethan to inherit the empire he had built. To mold him into a successor who would dominate the business world with the same ruthlessness and brilliance.

Ethan had spent years being trained, pressured, and controlled, all for a future that had never belonged to him.

But everything had fallen apart the day Ethan chose acting.

It had not been a moment of rebellion. It had been a moment of truth. For the first time, Ethan had chosen something for himself.

And Marcus had never forgiven him for it.

Since then, Marcus had done everything in his power to make Ethan reconsider. He had used influence, pressure, silence, and even emotional distance. But none of it had worked.

Because by then, Ethan had already walked away.

He had left the business. Left the expectations. Left the version of himself his father had created.

And after what had happened with Kathrine, Ethan was certain Marcus would never involve himself in their lives again.

Which was exactly why he did not care about his approval.

Kathrine, however, pressed her lips into a thin line.

She could see the wall Ethan had built around his father. It was strong, unyielding, and filled with years of quiet resentment.

But how could she ignore what she had heard what the doctor said.

Because beneath everything, Marcus was still Ethan’s father. And because she knew something Ethan didn’t.

"Still, I don’t mind working hard," Kathrine said quietly. "After all, my future depends on his decision."

Ethan looked at her.

He didn’t respond immediately.

Something about her words unsettled him. He couldn’t explain why. It was not what she said, but how she said it. There was a quiet determination in her voice, something deeper than ambition.

Something personal.

For a brief moment, an unfamiliar discomfort stirred in his chest.

But he ignored it.

Because it was easier that way.

Kathrine noticed his silence but chose not to push further.

Instead, she clapped her hands lightly and forced a brighter tone.

"Now come on," she said. "Tell me everything about your father."

Her sudden shift eased the tension in the room.

Ethan exhaled slowly, leaning back as he studied her face. He knew she was changing the subject on purpose, giving both of them an escape from the heaviness that had settled between them.

And he let her.

"Where do you want me to start?" he asked.

Kathrine tilted her head thoughtfully. "What does he like? What earns his trust?"

Ethan hesitated, then began speaking.

Slowly, cautiously, he started revealing pieces of the man he had spent his entire life trying to escape.

And without realizing it, he was also opening a door he had long kept closed.

The next morning, Anna woke up as usual, but the first thing she did was check on her mother.

Anna quietly closed the door and walked back to her room.

Last night, before going to bed, both Anna and Daniel had come to a silent but firm conclusion. They now understood that Roseline was trying to manipulate the situation, and Collin was somehow connected to it.

And since Daniel already knew where Collin was hiding, he chose not to act immediately. Instead, he let Collin remain there, unaware that he had already been discovered. The man continued to believe he was safe, and that false sense of security was exactly what they needed.

If Collin believed he was winning, he would make mistakes.

And through those mistakes, they would uncover the true purpose behind his meetings with Roseline.

For now, they had to play along.

They had to make both Roseline and Collin believe that nothing had changed.

Anna sat on the edge of her bed and picked up her phone. Her fingers moved quickly across the screen as she typed a message. After reading it once, she pressed send.

A moment later, Daniel, who was sitting beside her, leaned back slightly and rested his head on his hand. His eyes remained fixed on her, watching her every movement with quiet intensity.

"By the way, I met Kathrine yesterday," Anna said casually after placing her phone aside.

Daniel’s expression shifted almost immediately. His posture straightened, and a seriousness replaced the calm look he had been carrying.

"Did she tell you how I died?" he asked.

Anna nodded slowly.

"And also about her," she added.

Daniel’s brows drew together, curiosity and tension mixing in his eyes. He did not interrupt her. Instead, he waited as she took a deep breath and spoke.

Anna told him how Kathrine had been killed by an unknown man. The same man had told her about Daniel’s death as well. He had even revealed that Kathrine had no idea how Daniel truly died until he told her himself, confirming the news report that declared it a suicide, claiming he had been unable to endure his downfall. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

"Don’t you find it strange?" Anna said quietly, her voice heavy with realization. "All of us were killed in our past lives without ever knowing who was behind it. Whoever it was had planned everything long in advance, only to execute it at the perfect moment."

Daniel, who had been leaning back, slowly sat up to face her. The weight of her words settled between them, thick and suffocating. These were the very thoughts that had been haunting him, circling his mind without mercy. With every revelation, the certainty grew stronger. The person who killed them was not different. It was the same individual.

"But the question is," Anna muttered, her voice barely above a whisper, "who could it be?"

Her words seized Daniel’s attention completely. He held her gaze, the heaviness of the truth pressing down on them both.
