Chapter 12: Woes of a Weary Monarch

The royalty had their hands tied with another issue.

A very tricky one at that.

And that was the wrath of the nobility directly being aimed towards the crown.

The defence minister of Ignaz, Raum Valentine Ignatius, an honest and upright youth, or so he was portrayed as, was furious with his half-brother, the Emperor Vasilios Valentine.

He, as a dutiful Defence Minister, had previously deployed nine grandmaster level knights to guard the Weaponry Archive to ensure the safe keeping of the valuable artefacts inside, and what did the foolish emperor do?

The emperor redeployed the grandmaster level knights to allegedly "rescue" a pretty faced brothel worker in the Vermilion Blossom Slopes, a minor peak which is a week's journey from the capital.

That too without notifying Raum Valentine.

And nine ordinary knights, equipped with face masks, were appointed as the temporary Weaponry Archive guards.

Not a soul was aware of this exchange.

It only came to light when the real identities of the dead knights was discovered, and the emperor was forced to spill the beans as to why they were guarding the Weaponry Archive instead of the Grandmasters.

The Weaponry Archive was practically a sanctuary hidden away from the prying eyes of outsiders, so the chances of robbery was already minimal.

The emperor believed that no one would be able to reach the location of the weaponry archive, let alone loot it.

But what slipped his mind was that all direct descendants of the crown was taught the location of the Weaponry Archive, including Helios.

That's precisely why Raum Valentine Ignatius had deployed nine grandmaster level knights to guard the hidden sanctuary, in case a successor turned rogue and attacked the Weaponry Archive to increase his chances of becoming the next emperor.

After all, the battle of succession was a bloody one, and there were no rules the participants had to adhere to.

The possibility of an attack was greater from the inside, not the outside. And that was what that precisely happened.

Helios, an unassuming twelve years old, took up the challenge and passed with flying colours, making the Ignaz Empire look like a fool by banishing such a talent.

Raum Valentine revealed everything in the next cabinet meeting, demanding appropriate compensation.

And the royalty was put in a bind.

The revelation of the truth made all the noble houses allied with the Ignatius family aghast, and they began spreading rumours about the incompetency and debaucherous nature of the emperor.

Even some politically neutral families began subtly turning against the Ignaz family.

After a long day of mitigating accusations and pacifying his own faction, the emperor Vasilios Valentine Ignaz was irritated and frustrated.

He couldn't fathom how that twelve year old little boy could muster the courage to rob the weaponry archive. And since when did Helios have his own followers?

Another nagging sensation gnawed at the back of the emperor's mind.

From what his own experience spelled, Helios was a cautious soul. He would never take up on a mission he wasn't 100% sure he would succeed in. That is the exact reason why he hastily sought to banish Helios to the Demantoid Wilderness.

He did not want the son of a mere slave sitting on the throne upon which he, the Great Vasilios Valentine had once sat.

But neither did he wish to see the boy who reminded him of Florence too much dead with his own eyes.

Hence, banishing him for a decade seemed to be the best choice.

But how was he to know that Helios would attempt something so daring right before his exile ?

Also, unless Helios was 100% certain that he could pull off The Weaponry Archive Robbery with his ragtag group of followers, he would not have attempted it.

This signified that someone had informed him of the switch in the guards.

But who would do that?

Only he himself knew what was actually going on. Even the replacement guards did not have a clear idea of what they were the guardians of.

Was there a mole? Or was it merely a fluke?

Alas, His Majesty The Emperor was not fated to get to the bottom of this mystery in his lifetime!

A bigger conspiracy was at play, and so many chess pieces were involved that even the royalty remained at dark of its existence until it was late, too late.
