Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1570 - 799: The Second Day of the New Year (Part 2)
The three children burst into laughter, and Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang also smiled with joy.
When they called for the table to be set and the steaming dumplings to be brought up, the family had just started eating when the visitors came to offer New Year’s greetings.
As in previous years, the first day of the New Year went by in the busy and lively atmosphere of receiving and entertaining guests.
On the second day of the New Year, the family got up early again. Lady Zhang, along with Lian Manman, led a group of little maidservants to tidy up the house again, and had the kitchen prepare various exquisite snacks. This year’s second day of the New Year was special for Lian Manman’s family because it was the first year aunt and uncle-in-law would come to visit and extend New Year greetings.
The Wu family got along well with the Lian family, and both Wu Yugui and Lady Wu Wang were experienced and socially adept. Therefore, after breakfast, without needing Wu Jiaxing or Lian Zhizhi to ask, they urged the two to set off early to the Thirty Mile Camp.
When their daughter and son-in-law arrived, both Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang were overjoyed. Perhaps because she was married, Wu Jiaxing appeared more mature, and Lian Zhizhi’s face and figure had become slightly fuller, gradually showing the charming grace of a young married woman.
Lady Zhang and Lian Manman escorted Lian Zhizhi to the rear courtyard, where the three of them sat on the heated bed. The little maidservants came in one after another and filled the table with various pastries and snacks. The wife and little maidservant who came with Lian Zhizhi received their reward from Lady Zhang and were ushered out, leaving only the three women to talk freely inside.
Because Lian Zhizhi got married at the end of winter, and then everyone was busy with New Year’s matters during the twelfth lunar month, she had hardly returned since the wedding apart from the homecoming visit, so this meeting was particularly affectionate.
"Are your father-in-law and mother-in-law well?" Lady Zhang first inquired about Wu Yugui and Lady Wu Wang.
"They are well, and they asked me to extend their greetings to you and father," Lian Zhizhi replied.
Since today was the homecoming day for the aunt, it wouldn’t make sense for Wu Yugui and Lady Wu Wang to come. However, as the Wu family was hosting a banquet on the fourth day and the Lian family on the sixth day, the two families would see each other soon. Additionally, the two families had agreed that once things settled down, they would arrange another gathering on their own.
Lady Zhang then asked about Lian Zhizhi’s daily life at the Wu family. The main concern was whether she was living well at her in-laws. Lian Zhizhi remained smiling and said that everything was good.
The three continued chatting about family matters, and Lian Zhizhi told Lady Zhang and Lian Manman about how Lady Wu Wang guided her in preparing for the New Year and the gifts for various places, and how during the New Year, both Lady Wu Wang, she, and Wu Jiayu cooked personally, among other things.
Listening to Lian Zhizhi’s account, Lian Manman was delightfully surprised by Lian Zhizhi’s transformation.
"Mother, have you noticed? My sister seems to be more capable now than when she was at home," Lian Manman said with a smile. As Lian Zhizhi talked about relatives and other matters, she already appeared to be a capable young wife.
"Indeed," Lady Zhang nodded.
Lian Zhizhi’s increased capability was tied to her change in status. As the only daughter-in-law of the Wu family, there were things she had to learn. On the other hand, through Lian Zhizhi’s storytelling, Lian Manman also realized the significant influence Lady Wu Wang had on Lian Zhizhi.
Lady Wu Wang took Lian Zhizhi under her wing, teaching her many things.
"Some things, I had never done at home, and mother-in-law taught me with great patience," Lian Zhizhi added.
In fact, the relationship between Lady Wu Wang and Lian Zhizhi as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law was what a normal relationship should be. It was also most beneficial for the harmony and development of a family.
A mother-in-law can become a good teacher for her daughter-in-law.
During this era, many girls married at a young age. Due to their limited age and experience, they didn’t understand many things after marrying into their in-laws, and their minds weren’t mature enough. This was when the mother-in-law’s influence was tremendous.
Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi, as mother and daughter, could be seen as two extreme examples in this aspect.
When Lady Zhang married into the Lian family, Lady Zhou did not teach her much. Even when Lady Zhang’s children were grown, all she could do in the Lian family was follow orders and work, without any say in family matters. Moreover, Lady Zhou brainwashed her into being a blindly filial daughter-in-law, unable to protect even her own children.
However, when Lian Zhizhi married into the Wu family, Lady Wu Wang taught her many things, gradually turning her into a clever and capable young wife.
As a mother-in-law, Lady Zhou wanted an obedient and voiceless daughter-in-law, ignoring all other issues. In contrast, Lady Wu Wang guided her daughter-in-law in managing household affairs, truly considering the family’s future and the well-being of descendants.
"Your mother-in-law is indeed capable and experienced. Learn well from her, so you can manage the household in the future, and I can be at ease... Be a good filial daughter-in-law to your father-in-law and mother-in-law..." Lady Zhang said.
"Yes," Lian Zhizhi naturally nodded.
"Mother," Lian Zhizhi hesitated slightly, her face blushing, then she lowered her voice, saying something in Lady Zhang’s ear when there was no one else in the room.
"Really?" Lady Zhang’s expression changed immediately.
"I’m not sure yet, so I’m asking you, mother," Lian Zhizhi said, a bit shyly.
"Silly child," Lady Zhang’s expression softened so much that it nearly melted, "it’s almost certain. Have you told Jiaxing or your mother-in-law?"
"Not yet, and it’s not confirmed. I haven’t felt anything," Lian Zhizhi said shyly again.
"Mother, sister, what are you talking about?" Lian Manman looked between Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi, "Is it, my sister is expecting?"
