Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1684 - 859: Joyful Events Continue (Part 2)
This little stove wasn’t serving any extravagant dishes, it just replaced Si Lang’s main staple with white rice and flour. In the old house, even regular patients didn’t get such treatment. Si Lang suddenly became quite the "precious" one.
But Si Lang remained sullen, with a gloomy face all day, speaking very little, and he didn’t refute nor nod at whatever Old Master Lian said, just listened with his head down. However, he didn’t refuse the special care from Old Master Lian, enjoyed it quite justifiably, and even started to order side dishes.
Lady Zhou pinched her nose and endured it twice before quitting.
Because she was somewhat afraid of Si Lang, Lady Zhou didn’t confront him directly but waited until Si Lang returned to the east wing before she overturned the table with Old Master Lian.
"He’s just a half-grown kid, what did he do? Is he sick, or did he achieve some great feat? He ran away for several days without telling anyone, disgraced the Old Lian Family, caused the whole family to worry and fear, everyone was running around searching for him, our legs have grown thin from all the running, and still, he acts like it was all commendable, does nothing all day, and he still gets to enjoy white rice and flour. Even I, the heavens and the earth, haven’t enjoyed that."
"Keep your voice down." Old Master Lian gave Lady Zhou a look, "Isn’t Si Lang just back home?"
Old Master Lian’s meaning was to coax Si Lang a bit so this Chapter could be closed for good.
"So what if he’s back, he’s eaten quite a few meals, it’s enough. Didn’t you see, he’s getting arrogant, even asking for more food? Hah, just like his mother, oblivious. If he eats more, his mouth will get spoiled, and his appetite will only grow. If you don’t give him white rice and flour later, he’ll eat you instead."
Lady Zhou straightforwardly told Old Master Lian to stop Si Lang’s meals from the little stove. Of course, Old Master Lian didn’t agree, telling Lady Zhou to give Si Lang a couple more days.
"Once the mood clears up, it’ll be fine."
Lady Zhou was determined not to comply. At the next meal, sure enough, there was no little stove for Si Lang.
Si Lang made a fuss, Old Master Lian tried to persuade, but Lady Zhou wouldn’t budge an inch. It wasn’t just the cost of white rice and flour that pained her, she couldn’t stand the lawlessness of it all.
In the end, after eating from the little stove for two days, Si Lang returned to sharing the same meals as everyone else. No matter how much he fussed or put on a face, Lady Zhou’s heart was as firm as iron.
"I’ll go check on him." Lian Shouxin told his wife and children, then went to the front courtyard to see Si Lang.
Soon, Lian Shouxin returned.
"What did Si Lang want with you?" Lady Zhang asked Lian Shouxin.
"Nothing much, he just told me he wants to go back to work at the shop." Lian Shouxin said.
Si Lang came back from Jinyang County Town for a matchmaking, he had taken a two-day leave from the shop, but then stayed back for several days. Moreover, Old Master Lian had suggested not letting Si Lang work at the shop anymore. So Si Lang wanting to return to work had to come through Lian Shouxin first.
"Has he figured things out?" Lady Zhang said, "If he can work well at the shop, it’s better than just staying at home doing nothing."
"That’s what I thought too." Lian Shouxin nodded, "As soon as Si Lang asked, I agreed."
"Dad, didn’t you say Grandma told you to not let Si Lang go back to work in the town?" Lian Manman asked Lian Shouxin.
"She did say that, just worried that Si Lang, being close to his aunt’s house in town, might cause them trouble." Lian Shouxin said dismissively, "These past few days, the Old Master has been talking a lot to Si Lang, advising him. I’ve thought it through, if Si Lang has such thoughts, not letting him work in town won’t stop him from going there."
"In these matters, you simply can’t listen to the old woman’s words." Lian Shouxin spoke naturally, "The Old Master is happy for Si Lang to go work."
Lian Manman exchanged a glance with Wu Lang and Xiao Qi, and the three children started to snicker.
"Dad, if Grandma finds out you’re not listening to her and are saying these things, she’ll scold you for sure." Lian Manman said on purpose.
"Let her scold, it’s better than listening to her and doing something foolish." Lian Shouxin said.
Now, while Lian Shouxin might still be somewhat "afraid" of Lady Zhou, he has come to a proper understanding of her, thus often making the right decisions.
The next day, Si Lang indeed cleaned up and went to Jinyang County Town. Lian Shouxin sent someone to leave word with Chiang Zhanggui, letting him know that the paper craft shop would still accommodate Si Lang, allowing him to stay overnight in the shop.
Si Lang going to work made Lady Zhou happy in some ways, as she didn’t have to see Si Lang every day and one less mouth to feed, but it also left her constantly worried that Si Lang being in town might do harm to Lian Lanlan. Old Master Lian, however, saw Si Lang off to the village boundary, looking very pleased about Si Lang’s decision to work.
Si Lang having a livelihood gave hope to his days, making unexpected incidents less likely.
But as soon as Old Master Lian turned around, out of sight, the pleased smile on his face vanished, replaced by worry and weariness.
"I can see through every child in this family, except for Si Lang, the more I look, the less I understand, and it leaves me uneasy." Old Master Lian said the same to both Lian Shouxin and Lian Shouli.
"He’s just no good, just wait and see, he’ll amount to nothing, it’ll be a blessing if he doesn’t end up in jail." Behind the scenes, Lady Zhou’s words remained harsh and cutting.
In fact, she wasn’t specifically targeting Si Lang, but had the same harsh tone towards all her other grandchildren except Lian Shouren and Lian Jizu, as if they were all her enemies.
"...Underworld, Tongue-Ripping Hell..."
In reality, you don’t have to wait for that day. In this world, cause and effect are intertwined, and the seeds Lady Zhou has sown are already reaping their corresponding results, though she has yet to realize it.
Before you know it, February comes around. February brings greater joys to Lian Manman’s family.
