Reborn as a Mechanist with a God-Tier System-Chapter 261: The Tale of a Poor Man [3]
"David, you’re back!" His roommates instantly became energetic and lively the moment they saw him. "How was business?"
"Normal, just the normal," David laughed. "But no giving up!" He said loudly.
He grinned at his roommates. "I’m an abnormal, I don’t judge myself by the standards of others, I won’t stop till I win!"
"That’s the spirit!" One of his roommates said enthusiastically.
"Cabin D World to the world!" David said loudly.
"CABIN D WORLD TO THE WORLD!" His roommates responded.
Of his 8 roommates, David was the liveliest and most optimistic one.
With all of them desperately focused on being billionaires, their lives was mostly filled with gloom and overthinking but anytime David came back home, the atmosphere would liven up immediately.
To his roommates, he was their daily therapy though they would never admit it in front of him.
While leading the conversation among his roommates, a tired David dropped his backpack containing his products and walked toward the wooden box by the corner of the room.
He was famished.
He opened the wooden box slightly, dipped his hand inside and picked up a neatly wrapped finger-sized nutrient pack.
Without hesitation, he opened it and started chewing away.
This was going to be his only food till night.
The wooden box was filled with nutrient packs. Unable to afford the expensive food in the city, as abnormals groomed by their leaders who were busy chasing their dreams, the group of 8 distributors didn’t mind surviving on just nutrient packs.
It was a necessary sacrifice towards their goal of being billionaires.
The only time that they had proper meal was when their leader allowed them to visit him in his apartment in the city.
After leading the conversation for a few minutes, livening the atmosphere with his presence and making his roommates laugh, David finally laid down on a corner of the interconnected mats.
With him lying down to rest, silence returned to this mold-filled underground room. Laying on his side and facing the damp wall, with the silence acting as the perfect backdrop for his mind, David became lost in his thoughts.
He tried to think of his future like usual, he tried to think of what it felt like being a billionaire, he tried to think of what meeting Bill Zefyr physically for the first time would going to be like.
He tried to think of the satisfaction he would feel, but this time the thought didn’t stay. His mind was scattered.
This time, instead of thinking of his billionaire future, he could not help it as fragmented memories of his customer confronting him replayed in his head.
He saw the dagger again and he relived the fear all over again.
’David you f*cking scam!’ The voice replayed in his head in a loop. ’You sold fake products to me!’
The voices replayed over and over again, refusing to leave.
Instinctively, David’s body curled in the coldness of the tarpaulin mat as once again, he challenged his doubts and fears alone.
David felt confused, he felt disoriented like the world was turning upside down, spinning fast like he was stuck in the middle of a storm. He felt like reality was unraveling before him.
All these mental sensations made David feel sick.
In the end, all of it culminated in one question. ’Why?’
’Why does the drugs not work for him?’
This was not the first time that he was forced to confront these questions.
He still vividly remembered 2 months ago when the middle-aged woman cried to the leader’s apartment, saying that her son lost the fight against the viral infection and died despite all the assurances that were made to her.
David still remembered how shocked he felt on hearing her say it. Afterall, he was there when desperate, she came to seek help with their products after hearing about Cabin D World.
This woman sacrificed all of her savings, selling all her tangible properties and using her little business as collateral, spending over 500 Neo Credits to purchase products.
He could still remember Mr. Creed, his direct leader reassuring her confidently, giving her his word that her son would be well in less than 2 days.
And yet, in the end, after all the sacrifice, her son died.
She didn’t just lose her son, she lost all of her savings and her business. She lost everything, all because of Cabin D World.
This event left her broken and traumatized, she became a shell of herself.
David still remembered her crying in front of Mr. Creed’s apartment, laying her heart out and begging for help, and yet all Mr. Creed had to say was that she didn’t buy enough products that was why her son died.
Mr. Creed never addressed the topic of helping her.
2 weeks later, David heard from one of his roommates that the woman committed suicide as she could not live with the circumstances surrounding the death of her son.
David still hadn’t lived past that guilt despite the fact that he was not the one who directly dealt with her.
Long before that, David already experienced similar events that left him questioning a lot of things but it was on that day that his doubt solidified.
’Are we truly helping people?’
’Are our drugs truly as effective and miraculous as we advertise?’
’Are we truly as philanthropic as we preach?’
’And will working here really make me a billionaire?’ The last question made David quietly think of his room and his 7 roommates, it also made him rethink a lot of his life choices.
He started working for Cabin D World 6 years ago at the age of 18.
His family opposed the business, telling him to go do something better with his life and because of it, motivated by his leader, he cut all ties to his family all so he could focus on his dream.
He ran away from home, enticed by the Cabin D World dream.
David grew up in an average family where they barely made ends meet, and as a teenager, David didn’t want such a life.
He wanted a life of affluence.
He wanted to live a rich and fulfilling life, he wanted to live a life of abundance, a life where he had money and had the connections to become an Ascended, gaining both the money to provide for his family and the power to protect them.
He didn’t want to live an average life and this was why he ran from home, he was motivated by Bill Zefyr’s story.
He wanted to become the next Bill Zefyr, he wanted to be great.
Resolutely sacrificing everything to pursue his dream, his Cabin D World leader became his adopted father as he taught him how to grow in the business, how to sell products to people, and how to make business presentations.
Mr. Creed also brought him to Canyon Hub where he put him in this room with roommates.
During the past 6 years of his life, David had done everything possible to succeed in the business and become a billionaire, yet here he was.
Mr. Creed made him a promise and set a goal for him that if he executed everything that he was taught, he would become a billionaire in 2 to 3 years, and yet here he was, 6 years in.
’Where did I go wrong?’ He thought. ’Did I not work hard enough?’
Every year, Mr. Creed and the crew motivated them, telling them to be ’abnormals’ and focus on the grind.
’No pain, no gain,’ Mr. Creed always said.
Most of them never thought of advancing their school education because according to Mr. Creed, going to school is equal to being a civil servant.
And being a civil servant means being a civilized slave.
According to Mr. Creed, the only way to beat the matrix and become a billionaire is to dedicate time and effort to Cabin D World.
As for his family, David always held on to Mr. Creed’s words. ’Don’t worry, when you succeed, they’ll be the ones looking for you’.
That was motivation to him and it left him burning with zeal every year.
For the past 6 years, with someone to motivate him every time, David never left, working himself to the bone just to grow and yet, yet...
David stared in a daze. ’It can’t be my fault now, is it?’
’I’ve done everything’.
’Dad died 4 years ago and I couldn’t even attend his burial... I couldn’t attend my own father’s burial!’ He couldn’t help it, tears instinctively started flowing down his eyes but he wiped them off before his roommates would notice.
’I wanted to be a billionaire and return home in a triumphant manner’.
’I’m 25 now and there’s still no billion in sight’.
’Last I heard, mom is sick and I’m not even confident in my products anymore to send some to her’.
David couldn’t sleep, he kept on overthinking till his brain hurt.
He also thought of the man who he sold products to this morning. Like a lot of other customers of his in the past, the man didn’t have the money but persuaded by his words, he had to borrow money just to save his daughter.
But the question lingered. ’Are our drugs even effective?’
’What if the drugs were never effective? What if it’s just a scam?’ The thought made David stare in a daze but this time, he no longer dodged it.
’If they’re not effective, I would be letting an innocent girl die while putting her poor father in debt’.
David was restless. ’Is Cabin D World actually a scam?’
’Is this whole system just a scam?’
But even he struggled to believe it. ’But it’s an international company, and it’s founded by Bill Zefyr!’
’Bill Zefyr is credible! Surely, Bill Zefyr won’t be involved in a scam right?’
The more he thought, the more anxious he became.
In the end, unable to sleep, David stood up and put on his clothes again as he resolutely decided to leave the room.
"Hey David, where to?"
"I want to go meet Mr. Creed".
His roommates were stunned. "But he didn’t summon us, right?"
"I know," David forced a smile. "I have something to discuss with him".
