Chapter 50 -50 I Don’t Want to Owe Favors
Luo Qiao didn’t stop picking until her basket was almost full.
Then she took out a fish, about two jins in weight, from her own basket and placed it into Grandma Lin’s basket.
She said softly, “Grandma Lin, I caught this fish in the pond. Take it home and use it to nourish yourself and Grandpa Lin.”
Old Lady Lin was startled and hastily objected, “Girl, this won’t do. The grain you’ve given us already weighs heavily on our conscience. How can we accept your fish? It’s true that there are fish in the pond, but they’re not easy to catch.
Girl, you should avoid that pond in the future. It’s very deep. I remember my father-in-law saying that even a rope of fifty or sixty meters didn’t reach the bottom. Please, girl, stay safe and steer clear of that place.”
Luo Qiao replied, “Grandma Lin, I didn’t go into the water, I used a net. Please don’t worry.”
Without pausing her movements, she placed the fish at the bottom of the basket and then added more firewood on top, while Old Lady Lin fretted, clapping her hands anxiously.
Luo Qiao continued, “Grandma Lin, I have another fish in my basket. Please, don’t be shy. It’s getting late; you should head home.”
Old Lady Lin, with mixed emotions, could only nod her head and prepared to leave. Luo Qiao, seeing the load of firewood on the old woman’s back, couldn’t bear it and said, “Grandma Lin, wait here for me, please don’t go anywhere.”
She then quickly shouldered her own basket and hurried home. It wasn’t far from the mountain to the Educated Youth spot, so the journey was short.
Rushing to put the basket back in the yard and locking the door, she ran back to Old Lady Lin, lifted her basket of firewood onto her back, and said, “Let’s go, I’ll help you take this home.”
Old Lady Lin protested, “Oh my, really, it’s not necessary. I thought you had something urgent to attend to. I can carry it myself.”
Luo Qiao insisted, “It’s no trouble, Grandma Lin. Let’s go, or you’ll be late for cooking dinner.”
Seeing Luo Qiao’s determination to help, Old Lady Lin could only accept and they headed towards her home together.
Along the way, the old woman and the young girl chatted amiably. They encountered many villagers; some praised Luo Qiao for her good deed, others were critical, saying there was no benefit in trying to get on the good side of Old Lady Lin, accusing Luo Qiao of putting on a show for the village.
These words didn’t hurt Luo Qiao; if it weren’t for seeing Grandma Lin so thin and frail, to the point a gust of wind could topple her, she might not have felt so compelled to help. After all, it was just lending a hand.
Now wasn’t the apocalypse, after all. One had to integrate into the community. Besides, when she first arrived at the Educated Youth spot, if not for the help of the brigade leader and his wife, she wouldn’t have settled in so quickly.
One must always look forward, look to the good and to the kind. And working in the fields, she had often heard the aunties talking about the Lin family’s situation. Having encountered them, she couldn’t just ignore their plight.
After delivering the items to their home without lingering, she left. Luo Qiao didn’t mention the offer to help them gather firewood in the mountains another day, not wanting to unsettle the old couple.
The Old Couple of the Lin family were only in their sixties, but they looked to be over seventy. Helping them was the least she could do and for her, it wasn’t a hassle.
As for what others said, it didn’t matter. After all, mouths belonged to others, and they were free to speak as they wished. It wouldn’t cost her a piece of flesh.
Back at home, Luo Qiao prepared the two fish, mainly because she feared that Lu Yichen wouldn’t have enough to eat. After all, he had brought so much firewood. In truth, she would have preferred to tell him it wasn’t necessary, convinced that she could handle it herself.
But after mentioning it several times, Lu Yichen thought she didn’t want to owe any favors, so she let him be. As a matter of courtesy, the only thing she could do was prepare some food to return the favor.
