Reborn As An Extra In My Own Novel-Chapter 62: Deerheart’s Attack [4]
Chapter 62: Deerheart’s Attack [4]
On the outskirts of the academy in an area paved with obsidian tiles, the sky was still tinged with purple and death still lingered over the heads of the countless teachers and students.
At the very edge of a slime-infested alleyway, where blood and slime clung to the walls like roots to the earth, Neko-sensei stood among three teachers as they came to an abrupt halt.
The sounds of wailing and cries were still very much audible from the distance they stood from the academy.
Neko-sensei gritted her teeth, fury burning in her emerald eyes, then it gleamed brightly as she began channeling mana through her bloodstream.
Professor Kelvin looked at her then sighed. In an instant, his body began to harden as an outer shell made of stainless steel encased him, making him look like some kind of futuristic robot.
He slicked his hair back and stood beside Neko-sensei.
"So Lisa, what’s the plan? I doubt whatever’s lurking in there is going to be friendly."
Neko-sensei gave him a glance, her expression unreadable. She raised her hand rather slowly and snapped her fingers.
The sound was sharp, not the kind that would send physical tremors but the kind that shakes the soul.
The whole world seemed to fall silent as a golden-glowing zone enveloped the entire alleyway.
With another snap of her fingers, all the teachers that were with her, including herself, teleported into the inner part of the obsidian alleyway.
The light from the zone soon shifted from the entrance to the inside layout, which looked far worse than the outer region.
The walls and tiles had lost their color, making the materials used in creating them unrecognizable. The only thing that remained was a blood-soaked, slime-coated floor that reeked of ammonia.
Seeing the carnage, Neko-sensei pulled her hair back, tying it into her usual ponytail, and activated her combat suit.
One step at a time, she and the others made their way into the narrowing alley.
The sounds of bones snapping, flesh smearing, and worst of all: the sight of corpses, filled the hallow path.
Some of the bodies she recognized, others not so much. The band of professors were silent, not because they wanted to be but because instinct had taken over.
And just as they had intuitively known—there it was: a man with tentacles dressed in a Victorian suit, devouring the corpses of students while resting on his tentacle-like legs.
There was no doubt that he was once human, even his energy didn’t feel frenzied or overtaken by madness.
Neko-sensei swallowed hard, her hands trembling and eyes dilating. ’This bastard is strong... Higher A-rank, no...’
As if hearing her thoughts, Kelvin spoke through his shaking voice. "Lisa, he is.... a lower S-rank."
Neko-sensei couldn’t respond for a moment, a sharp sting piercing her throat. "I know..."
S-rank wasn’t a level anyone could reach even if they trained all their lives, since there was a catch to entering the rank, one that many didn’t know about.
That was because the high nobles and royals hoarded that secret method so they wouldn’t have to compete for their power.
It was also the reason why Neko-sensei hadn’t reached S-rank even after five years as an A-rank.
Since only those serving high-rankers could even dream of stepping into that power level.
That also meant one thing: the gap between an A-rank and an S-rank was like heaven and earth, as long as they had the technique and experience to match their rank.
The man who crouched meters ahead of them, just enough distance to strike and to dodge stared at them for a brief moment, but even then they could feel the pressure from his domineering presence.
His face was beautiful, unnaturally so, yet at the same time Neko-sensei couldn’t help but feel a sense of familiarity from it.
In his hands was a long jagged sword crafted from drifter bones, his lips stained with blood and his cold, dead, lifeless eyes stared at them, not even a flicker of emotion in them.
No hate, no fear, no joy... Nothing.
He opened his mouth as if about to say something but quickly closed it.
Neko-sensei felt like her life was being drained from her body with each passing second, cold sweat slid across her skin.
The pallor of her skin, glowing faintly under the purple moon... Even through the gasmask she could still sense the creature’s miasma soaking into her being, freezing not just her body but her soul.
Through her zone’s lens, she could see her other two comrades trembling violently, fidgeting with dread at the countdown to their end.
One of the other two professor’s backs was slightly hunched, his lips cracked as he struggled to stay upright.
Neko-sensei bit down on her lips, her hands clenched tightly into fists, she couldn’t afford to show weakness now... Even if it meant sacrificing her fellow colleagues, she wasn’t going to let this monster slip away.
The rather young, pale-skinned man finally spoke, but it wasn’t words that came from his mouth, like a ticking time bomb, he began counting down.
Slowly the numbers dropped from ten to seven, Neko-sensei quickly turned her trembling gaze to the other two teachers, who were now dashing toward the exit of the narrow path.
The figure seemed to grin faintly as he lifted one arm, and with a sweep of the jagged blade, the two teachers froze.
Their chests lifted high as if trying to vomit, while their bodies began to swell like balloons filled with air.
Kelvin’s gaze narrowed, his face tensed tightly as his knees buckled.
Blood and chunks of flesh burst in all directions, leaving not even a trace of the two professors behind.
At last, the man’s lips parted again. "That was fun. Wasn’t it?"
Neko-sensei’s eyes widened; even though her stomach churned, the fury in her gaze didn’t waver for a moment.
The man went on. "I like your eyes, and you’re rather pleasing to the eye—why don’t you become one of my..." He cut his words short, then smiled. "I suppose I can’t. Not even I would dare covet what belongs to the young lord."
Neko-sensei couldn’t comprehend his words or his reasoning. His posture was upright, and he spoke casually.
Plucking a bone stuck between his teeth, he continued. "If that’s how it is, then I’ll kill the man over there and rough you up a little. You know, like a proper villain, right?"
Neko-sensei lifted her hand, ready to snap her fingers, but before she could even twitch a muscle, the figure flashed past her and seized Kelvin’s arm, which held a gun.
"Shall we commence with the feast, young ones? The night is still quite young, let the parade of death, screams and pain begin."
