Chapter 486: Duties and Distractions ( 486 )
“OPEN THE SMALL GATE!” the beastkin captain shouted.
With a loud crank, the reinforced side gate at the base of the wall swung open.
“RUSH FORWARD!”
Beastkin soldiers surged through the gate, weapons drawn, forming a protective formation around the wounded dwarf.
“HEALER UNIT! READY!”
A group of beastkin healers moved quickly, mana glowing in their hands as they reached the fallen messenger.
“SOLDIERS! MARCH TOWARD THE DWARF! PROTECT HIM!”
The frontline guards closed in, keeping watch for any remaining threats from the hills beyond.
The dwarf struggled to lift his head, clutching a scroll sealed with the emblem of the Dwarven Kingdom.
“Message… from Chieftain Gumarak…” he gasped. “Request… for aid…”
“Give it to the captain!” one of the soldiers called out, kneeling beside him.
The healer dropped beside the dwarf, already casting recovery magic to slow the bleeding.
The captain took the scroll firmly, eyes locked on the dwarf’s bruised face.
“You did well. You made it. That’s enough.”
The soldier nodded as more beastkin moved to secure the area.
The monsters had disappeared.
The battlefield was silent, but tension still lingered in the air.
“Captain! Captain!” one of the beastkin soldiers called out.
“Yes?” the captain replied, stepping forward.
“This dwarf… he’s delivering this to us. A royal request.”
The soldier held out a scroll sealed with the mark of Chieftain Gumarak.
The captain took it with both hands, narrowing his eyes.
“A formal plea for assistance…”
He turned toward the wall.
“Prepare the fastest mount. I’ll deliver this personally to the capital.”
“Yes, Captain!”
He looked over his shoulder again.
“Call Kubart, Kaijan, and Hukam. Now. I want them ready at the stables.”
“Understood!”
“Also,” the captain added, glancing down at the wounded dwarf, who was now breathing steadily under the care of a healer.
“Once the dwarf is fully stabilized, send him to the recovery room. Make sure he gets food and water. Something warm.”
“Yes, Captain!”
Orders were issued swiftly. The camp moved into action.
And the message that could decide the fate of the Dwarven Kingdom was now on its way.
Meanwhile…
Javier had already finished planting several mana devices around the outer perimeter of the Beastkin Kingdom’s border.
Each one was buried at set intervals, faintly glowing with runes that pulsed with his mana. These devices were designed to neutralize dark miasma before it could infiltrate the territory.
Delya and Mimi were helping, carrying smaller sealed cores while following behind him.
“There,” Javier pointed. “And there. We plant one every mile. No gaps.”
He crouched down, adjusting the placement of one of the devices, pushing it deeper into the soil.
Delya stood nearby, hands on her hips, watching him carefully.
“Oh~ my Danna-sama is so serious and charming when he works.”
Javier looked up from the dirt, giving her a flat stare.
“Delya… can you get serious for now?”
She smiled, resting her chin on her knuckles.
“Okay~ if Danna-sama wishes it.”
Mimi was nearby, poking the ground with a small stick.
“Nya~! I’ve already planted two!”
“Good,” Javier said. “Let’s finish this row and move west. We still have more ground to cover.”
Inside Javier’s mind, he sighed.
If Liana and Gloria were here… this job would’ve been done already.
Faster. Cleaner. No pointless flirting. No random purring.
He looked at Mimi and Delya as they helped plant the next mana core.
Ugh… this is why I hate mounts that move like snails compared to Pekko birds.
Mimi was riding a striped fang-tiger, a beast-like feline with sharp claws and a thick mane. Strong and reliable, but not meant for speed across long distances.
Delya was on a dark war wolf, bigger than the average mount and good in rough terrain, but still not fast enough for long runs.
Both were faster than horses.
But nothing compared to Buddy.
Javier turned and saw Buddy happily digging into the dirt with his big claws, kicking dirt behind him like a giant bird-shaped child. He was making small chirping noises while tossing a rock aside.
Just like a chicken searching for worms.
“…Buddy.”
“Cuquawked?” he looked up, head tilted.
“You don’t miss Pikko and Peanut?”
Buddy blinked. Then tilted his head the other way. He gave a short cuquawk, then went back to digging the ground like nothing mattered.
Enjoying himself.
Javier sighed.
“…Yeah. Figures.”
Javier looked up just in time to see Buddy suddenly dash forward, letting out a loud “Cuquaaawked!” as he charged straight into the forest.
Leaves rustled. Branches snapped.
Then silence.
A moment later, Buddy returned, proudly stomping back with something clamped tightly in his huge beak.
It was a giant snake monster, easily longer than two wagons. Its body dragged behind him, and its head dangled lifelessly, fangs still bared.
“Whoa!” Mimi blinked in shock. “W-where did that come from?”
Delya raised an eyebrow. “My, that’s quite the gift offering.”
“Cuquawked!” Buddy flared his feathers proudly and dropped the snake with a loud thud.
Javier said nothing.
He just stared at him.
Long.
Quiet.
Then finally, he sighed.
“Haaah… we still have plenty of meat. Why do you need to hunt something like this?”
Buddy tilted his head, confused.
“Cuquawked?” (What do you mean?)
Then, without a care, Buddy turned around and happily resumed digging the ground again, kicking dirt behind him as if nothing had happened.
Javier rubbed his temples.
“I swear this bird hunts just for fun now…”
“Wow!” Mimi’s eyes sparkled as she poked the snake’s thick body with a stick. “With this, we can make lots of leather bags, leather shoes and even armor!”
Delya crouched beside it, nodding. “The meat’s not bad either. Tastes good when grilled or made into soup.”
Javier sighed and shook his head. freewebnoveℓ.com
He glanced up at the sky.
It was already afternoon.
The sun was hanging just above the trees, and the shadows were starting to stretch.
“Alright,” he said, brushing off his hands.
He walked a few steps away and picked a flat, shaded spot beneath a tall tree. Then, from his magic storage, he pulled out his portable grill, unfolded it, and placed it on the ground.
Next, he reached into the storage again and took out another slab of meat, already seasoned and fresh.
The grill lit with a soft hum as he channeled mana into it.
Soon, the sizzle of meat filled the air.
Mimi and Delya both sat nearby, eyes fixed on the grill.
Buddy? Still digging. Still happy.
