Chapter 58: I might kill you.

The ultimate pleasures of the Underground City were reserved only for outsiders with both identity cards and money, or for the upper echelon of the Mafia whose influence spread across the globe.

Every floor tile here reeked of opulence; the waiters’ meticulous care and the most advanced methods of indulgence made one feel as if they were treading the clouds, euphoric and detached from reality.

But lose your Identity Card, be without money, and this place would instantly transform into a man-eating hell.

Xu Si had heard Chen Mo mention this when she first arrived.

Don’t misunderstand the nature of humanity here, thinking that as long as they are people, they will possess some modicum of conscience.

The man asked her where she wanted to go.

Her last gun, kept for self-defense, had been confiscated during a search. So, apart from the relatively safe Gambling City, she couldn’t think of anywhere else.

But when the luxury car stopped at the entrance to the Gambling City, the moment she stepped out, she sensed numerous gazes—a feeling she had never experienced before.

There was sympathy, greed, calculation, and lust. All of it filled her with unease.

Before she could even step into the Gambling City, a woman holding a fan approached her. As they brushed past each other, the woman spoke in a soft, local accent, "Miss Xu, I’m from the Sanlian Chamber of Commerce. As far as I know, those two bandits have been killed. A word of advice: don’t go in for the next few days. Many people know you’ve been robbed. Without your Identity Card, they’ll have all sorts of ideas. Wait until it’s clear which faction those robbers belonged to and you’ve applied for their protection. It won’t be too late to come back then."

This news must have been released by the Triad Society. Coupled with the numerous eyewitnesses, word had spread incredibly fast.

On the sweltering summer night, Xu Si actually felt a chill.

She touched the navy-blue diamond necklace at her throat. Her long hair was meticulously coiled behind her ears, and her black dress reached her calves. In the darkness, her already exquisite and radiant face was like a wild, purebred black Rose.

One disaster followed another, and now even her only apparent escape route seemed unsafe.

She didn’t collapse on the spot, nor was she overcome with bewildered panic. Crying was useless. This situation was like a wilderness survival test; the most important thing was to find shelter first.

Among those present, no one showed overt malice towards her. It seemed the only one left was the man who had saved her time and again.

She glanced back slightly. The luxury car behind her hadn’t left; it remained parked. The car windows, crafted from some unknown material, revealed nothing of the interior, no matter how close she got.

Yet, she could still sense someone inside, silently observing everything.

In a way, Xu Si was someone who dared to think and act, a person who cared little for right or wrong, only for results.

She didn’t care about his motives or what he hoped to gain. First and foremost, she needed to survive before she could even begin to consider gains and losses.

Looking up, she gently tapped the dark, tinted car window. The surface felt cool to her touch, like the undisturbed surface of a vast, calm sea.

The bald man, having received his orders, hadn’t started the car. His burly arm, adorned with a gold square-faced watch, rested on the steering wheel as he listened to the decadent music drifting from afar.

Hearing the tap, the bald man said tentatively, "Boss, you were right. She came back."

A sliver of moon hung in the deep night sky. The man revealed only the lower half of his face. A faint smile touched his reddish lips—casual, yet with the smug satisfaction of a schemer whose plan had perfectly unfolded.

He lifted his mask with one hand, fitting it back onto his face. With the other, he lowered the sound-dampening window a fraction. Across the glass, his gaze met her gleaming, smiling peach-blossom eyes. His thin lips parted slightly. "What is it this time?"

Ignoring everyone’s stares, Xu Si placed her hand on the slightly open car window. She looked down to smooth the hem of her skirt, then lowered her gaze, her lips parting as she spoke, "Sir from the Triad Society, your territory is too chaotic. I have nowhere to go."

She hoped that showing an appropriate amount of weakness would yield some benefit, but it had little effect.

Even as her deep, gentle eyes gazed at him, the silver-haired man merely toyed with the gun in his hand, avoiding her stare. His somber, piercing eyes had already seen through all her petty calculations.

Yet, he still asked, feigning ignorance, "Then where do you want to go?"

The city blazed with light, as bright as day. Xu Si bit her lower lip. Her brow furrowed for only an instant before relaxing. The shifting glow of the streetlights reflected in her eyes.

"You told me to beware of bad people. Everyone here is a bad person. I think... perhaps you’re the only good one."

A CRACKLE of electricity sounded, and the streetlight behind her flickered. The man’s low chuckle reached her ears again.

It carried on a warm breeze, like one that blows over summer hills, entering her ears so clearly, so pleasantly, that it threatened to scatter her thoughts.

The man’s fingers, resting on the window ledge, twitched. He set down the weighty gun, and the corners of his lips slowly curved upward. fгeewebnovёl.com

"If I were a good person," he said, "there wouldn’t be any bad people left in this city."

"..." Xu Si offered a faint smile. "At least, you haven’t been bad to me."

Just as she was about to say more, the man suddenly interrupted her. He leaned closer, separated by the car window, his voice a low, seductive murmur, like the Devil coaxing a human.

"I know your objective. There’s no need to try and please me. Pay the price, and you can come with me."

Her breath seemed to catch at his words, only returning with a struggle.

Xu Si asked, "What do you want?"

Beneath the mask, his gaze darkened for an instant. He slowly lifted his eyes and smiled. "Many things. But I won’t tell you now. Are you coming?"

This man was incredibly skilled at ensnaring people’s minds. He left everything unclear, giving limitless room for wild speculation and fostering a dangerous sense of false hope.

If Xu Si had any better option, she would never agree to such a demand.

But the sky grew darker, and danger lurked everywhere.

Xu Si hadn’t missed the looks cast her way earlier. One, from a portly man in a suit, was particularly lewd, as if he saw her as an easily bullied prostitute.

She stood there, pondering for a long moment, and nearly reached a decision.

Whatever his motives, this man held the key to her survival over the next few days.

Better to get in the car and leave than to be trapped in such a revolting predicament.

She lifted her clear, bright eyes and nodded slightly. "There’s nothing I wouldn’t dare. I’ll go with you."

The words had barely left her lips when the car door unlocked automatically.

The man extended his slender fingers, proactively took her hand, and guided her into the back seat of the luxury car. He murmured with an almost inaudible sigh, "Truly bold. Let’s go then."

A subtle tension immediately filled the air. The car’s air conditioning stirred the hair pinned at the back of Xu Si’s head. Though at a disadvantage, she held her chin high. She exuded the aloof and proud aura of a wealthy young lady.

The car started, heading towards the forbidden zones deep within the Underground City.

Xu Si’s heart hammered relentlessly against her ribs.

The warmth of the man’s long fingertips lingered on her hand. Though he had barely moved, his touch sent continuous flutters through her heart.

She was mortified—he hadn’t done anything overt, yet he so easily captivated her.

She didn’t want to seem like a wanton fool. She wanted to silently withdraw her hand from his tight grip.

The next second, the man’s hazy, ethereal voice filled the cramped car—captivating, like the Devil’s whisper, and brimming with menace.

It was accompanied by the distinct CLICK of a handgun being cocked. "If you pull your hand back," he said, his voice soft but deadly, "I might just kill you."
