Chapter 70: Fever

"All right, let him recover well; I won’t go up," Xu Si said.

On the surface, Xu Si agreed not to go up, but her thoughts were entirely different. Maybe she wasn’t normal either. She was actually moved by such a crazy act. She didn’t want to stay away from him; on the contrary, she was quite concerned and wanted to find an opportunity to see for herself what he considered his ’bad shape.’

「That same night.」

Xu Si sat in the banquet hall on the first floor, talking on her mobile phone with Wen Jiaojiao. Slowly and methodically, she answered all of Wen Jiaojiao’s questions about the Underground City. Detecting Wen Jiaojiao’s longing to know more, Xu Si then changed the subject, asking, "Has Gu Jing been looking for you again?"

Wen Jiaojiao chuckled. "No. I thought he was my safe harbor, but it seems he’s not. Now I have to start a new life."

Xu Si’s mind stirred, reminded of her exceedingly kind husband from her previous life. She laughed. "Indeed, something better is waiting for you."

"You sound so sure. So where is your safe harbor?"

Xu Si was somewhat averse to discussing matters of the heart right then. She took a sip of her hot tea, her tone very calm. "What do I need a safe harbor for? Money is the ideal in this world."

"Okay, Boss Xu," Wen Jiaojiao laughed. "We should balance work and leisure, right? Earning money alone is no fun. That said, now that the foreign exchange issue is resolved, why haven’t you come back? Have you been bewitched by something? Do you need me to rescue you?"

"Indeed." Xu Si also laughed. She recalled how Wen Jiaojiao had tried her best last time, so she didn’t mention the dangers she currently faced. Squeezing the phone, she glanced at the Triad Society’s presence outside the mansion and joked, "The sea breeze here is too strong; I’ve been entangled by a Sea Monster."

"That must be a handsome Sea Monster then. I won’t interfere; I prefer humans," Wen Jiaojiao said.

And so they chatted casually.

When the doctor came down from the top floor for the last time that evening, Xu Si was quicker than the servants. She excused herself from the call, hung up, and called the doctor over to ask about Pei Zhen’s current situation.

"I was actually looking for you," the doctor explained in detail. "The boss developed a fever during the night, something that hasn’t happened in years. He’s already asleep and hasn’t had his injection. Perhaps you could wake him. The syringe and medication are in the room."

"I’m sorry," Xu Si frowned slightly. "I can’t go up."

The doctor laughed. "Sister-in-law, you definitely can go up. The whole Triad Society has always known that the boss is very fond of you."

Xu Si just took that as a polite remark. Or one meant for the wrong person.

Hearing that Pei Zhen had developed a fever, she genuinely intended to check on him. After seeing the doctor off, Xu Si planned to head towards the elevator leading to the top floor again.

She was dressed in a white silk gown, looking very serene. Her gaze was as frosty as if touched by the first hoarfrost, fitting the era’s perception of a pure, beautiful woman. But the uptilt at the corners of her peach-blossom eyes lacked that pure and innocent vibe; instead, they were somewhat enchanting.

The servant still stood guard, as firm as a marble column. "Sister-in-law, you can’t enter. It’s an order."

Xu Si furrowed her brow, her eyes bright with determination. Her footsteps were unceasing as she walked step by step into the elevator. "Don’t stop me. If anyone is to say that, let Fei Yi tell me himself."

When she was in no mood for words, her pride was indeed towering; she seemed like a tough nut to crack. Light on her feet and with a long stride, she pushed past them into the elevator. Her eyes glittered, confident that no one would truly dare to stop her.

The servants were all armed, imposing men over 1.8 meters tall, but in the end, no one dared to touch her.

People in the Triad Society rarely gossiped, but some had heard whispers of this secret: the boss supposedly had an exceptionally fierce and jealous wife, which was why no other woman was ever seen around him.

They could only watch as the elevator soared straight up, ascending to the top floor.

Xu Si smoothed the ends of her thick hair, tilting her head back slightly. The scattered light seemed to dance in her eyes. Her heart couldn’t help but soften a bit; it seemed she had gambled correctly. In the face of an inviolable command—she was the exception.

Yet, the closer she got to the room at the end of the hallway, the more danger she felt. It had a different atmosphere from her previous visit—as silent as a tomb.

She felt someone watching. Xu Si stopped in her tracks and looked back, but there was nothing.

"Pei Zhen?" she murmured, a hint of puzzlement in her soft voice.

The gaze, as if sensing her awareness, dissipated completely.

「In the room.」

The man who had been smoking by the window shook his head at the sniper on the nearby lighthouse. He gently extinguished his cigarette in the ashtray, turned off all the lights, and walked slowly into the bedroom, pulling a dark blanket over himself.

His gray eyes were closed, but they could not conceal the trace of a smile at their narrow corners as he waited quietly.

The next moment, the night wind grew gentler, as if afraid to disturb the sick person.

Xu Si tiptoed to the door and knocked softly. There was no response.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK—she tried again.

Still, no answer.

Remembering the doctor saying the man had a fever, she figured he was asleep and hadn’t heard her. She reached for the doorknob and pressed it down slowly until the subtle click of the lock turning signaled the door was opening just a crack. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

The door was actually unlocked!

Xu Si was a bit surprised but pushed the door open and stepped into the cold, dim space. After observing for a moment, she found a syringe and a bottle of blue medicine on the marble table. She picked them up delicately, cradling them in her arms.

The whole process felt incredibly stealthy, her breathing heavy with a thrilling tension.

The moon of the Underground City never sets. It hung high in the sky, brighter and rounder than Hong Kong Island’s moon.

Xu Si walked into the bedroom where she had once spent a night. She chose not to turn on the light, not wanting to disturb his rest. Bathed in the soft, diffuse moonlight, she immediately saw the man lying on the bed.

He seemed to be in a deep sleep. His silver-white hair and left arm dangled lifelessly over the side of the bed. His robe was half-open, revealing his firm chest and abdominal lines. Bloodstained gauze partially covered his collarbone, but extending backward from his shoulder, she could see what looked like the faint trace of a demonic face tattoo.

A dark, thin blanket covered his long legs. His striking features, exposed to the moonlight, possessed a deceptively harmless yet alluring charm.

Xu Si blushed a little at the sight. The playful words from her conversation with Wen Jiaojiao echoed in her mind.

He looked just like that stunningly handsome Sea Monster she had joked about. So shockingly handsome. And indeed, he had her ensnared.

Even so, Xu Si did not forget the purpose of her visit. First, she carefully adjusted the blanket covering him. Then, she took out the syringe, unwrapped it, and drew the medication into it. After confirming it was ready to use, she sat on the edge of the bed and reached out to touch the man’s forehead. The heat that met her palm made her sigh. "So hot. No wonder you didn’t hear me."

Only the tranquil moonlight illuminated the bedroom. Taking advantage of the rare opportunity to observe the man’s sleeping face up close, Xu Si leaned in. She gently touched the tip of his nose, where the tiny red mole was still as beautiful as ever. It used to be her favorite thing to look at.

"You’re not even ugly, yet you don’t let anyone see," she murmured softly, a hint of nostalgia in her voice. "You were much more obedient when you were little."

But the next second, a hoarse, chuckling voice came from beneath her.

"Xu Si."
