Reborn with a Necromancer System-Chapter 164: Sigils and Skinship
Chapter 164: Sigils and Skinship
Kai sat on the chair at the desk between the two beds in the small inn’s room he shared with Vepice. The faint glow of the extinguished lantern still lingering in the air like an afterimage burned into the wood. Parchment surrounded him, dozens of sheets, layered with rough sketches, flowing glyphs, and arcane sigil designs that crackled faintly with residual mana.
’Come on... I must be missing something. Am I layering them out of order? Do two of these sigils just not connect?’
His fingers were stained with ink, chalk, and traces of silver dust. His eyes were red with fatigue, but also shining with excitement.
Finally, the design before him pulsed.
The sigil. The culmination of nearly six hours of overlaying six separate magical constructs, meticulously adjusted, trimmed, reinforced, and made compatible.
Each layer fed into the next like a breath through a body, with no obstruction or conflict. Magic from the elemental schools, shadowwork, necromancy, strengthening arts, and even a sliver of divinity woven in.
Kai grinned.
"This is it. My masterpiece."
He rolled up the sleeve of his shirt and took a breath. With steady fingers and honed control, he pressed the sigil against his skin and activated it.
Everything went black.
Searing pain assaulted his body.
The lantern, the bed and the walls were all gone. But he could still see. He could feel. The world was not dark, only unlit by ordinary light.
[Mana Sense has been promoted to Mana Sight.]
He could see the weave of mana around him, the subtle strands of energy that made up the world. A breeze outside painted streaks through the room. The slow breath of Vepice in the other bed created soft ripples on the edge of his vision.
And he felt the magic work within him. Constantly. Effortlessly.
[Sigil of Sixfold Perfection] — Effects:
1. Perpetual Strengthening: Muscles reinforced passively. Weight feels lighter. Movements are more precise. Bone structure is subtly reinforced.
2. Passive Mana Conduction: Spells flow with less resistance, and the exchange of life essence for mana has a better conversion rate.
3. Mana Sight: Can see the world, through the flow of mana, even in total darkness or magical blind zones.
4. Soul Dampening Aura: Makes Kai’s own soul harder to detect, ideal for cloaking from divine or spiritual senses. Hopefully allowing him to cast some necromancy without drawing attention to himself.
5. Reactive Barrier Layer: A thin, skin-tight barrier which activates automatically when hit by any attack, lessening the impact.
6. Automated Healing: Whenever Kai takes damage, life essence will be automatically used to heal the wounds.
He smiled to himself. "Now this... was worth the effort. Maybe my naming sense is a little on the nose, but I like it."
Satisfied, he finally peeled himself off the chair and stumbled to the bed. He slid under the covers, each of his muscles humming quietly with magic, and for the first time in weeks, he let himself sleep.
---
The next morning, Kai’s eyes flicked open slowly.
The air was warm. The room quiet. He felt... oddly at peace.
He tried to shift, and he froze.
There was something, someone, wrapped tightly around him beneath the covers. Skin against skin. Smooth, unbroken, and startlingly warm.
He tilted his head down slowly and was met with a tousle of silver hair. Vepice.
Completely bare, save for the sheets tangled around them.
The illusion disappeared after she removed Mirage’s Veil with the rest of her clothing.
She clung to him like ivy growing on stone. Her arms around his waist, legs tangled with his, cheek pressed gently against his chest.
Kai flushed immediately.
’Wh-what...?’
He swallowed hard, instinct screaming to back away, but he stayed still. Very still. His heartbeat started to thunder. He gingerly lifted the edge of the blanket and peeked down...
’Yep. Very naked. Why is she-?’
He covered her again with a slow motion, his hands trembling slightly. Then leaned his head back on the pillow and stared at the ceiling.
’Lucky I don’t sleep naked... though she probably wouldn’t have joined ne. Maybe. Hopefully. ...Gods, I hope she wouldn’t have.’
Still, despite the flustered panic clenching his chest, he didn’t move. She looked peaceful. Calmer than she’d ever been, no dark shadows under her eyes, no tension in her brow, no nightmares clawing at the edges of her sleep.
She was safe. She felt safe.
And that was worth the discomfort.
Eventually, her breath shifted. A soft sigh escaped her lips, and she stirred. freewёbnoνel.com
"Morning..." she murmured, not moving away. Just slightly loosening her grip and rubbing her face against his shoulder.
"...Morning," Kai answered quietly, his voice a little hoarse.
She opened one eye, blinked up at him sleepily, then stretched her arms overhead and yawned. "Best sleep I’ve had in... years."
"I could tell."
She blinked again, then looked down at herself, and then back at him. Not the slightest bit embarrassed.
"Oh. Right." She shrugged. "Sorry if this makes you uncomfortable."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "I’d say surprised more than uncomfortable."
"Well... the cave was always cold," she explained, matter-of-factly. "I always slept like this, and... this room’s so warm, it made me restless. So I got rid of the extra heat."
"...By getting naked?"
"And I wanted to feel you nearby. It’s comforting."
Kai coughed into his hand, ears pink. "Right. Naked cuddles. Totally normal."
She tilted her head. "Is it not?"
"I mean... no. Well, it depends. Kind of. It’s complicated."
She narrowed her eyes. "You’re being weird."
"No, I’m being normal. You’re the one who stripped naked and used me as a body pillow without asking."
"You didn’t stop me."
"I wasn’t even conscious..."
She smiled and snuggled back down beneath the covers. "Don’t worry. It won’t become a habit... probably."
Kai groaned softly and ran a hand down his face.
’She definitely doesn’t understand the implications of this. Or maybe she does, and she’s just this chaotic.’
Still, a small smile tugged at his lips as she drifted off to sleep again.
The day was going to be long. But for a few more minutes, he could pretend that he wasn’t a death-slinging necromancer about to enter a high-profile tournament under a fake name while being hunted by divine forces.
For a few more minutes, he could just be... alive.
Kai lay on his back, staring up at the ceiling.
Vepice remained pressed against his side, her breath warm on his chest, her limbs still tangled around his. The sheets slipped slightly as she shifted in her sleep, and Kai instinctively reached out to tug them back over her. The motion gave him a full view of her bare back, smooth and unmarred, the soft rise and fall of her breath steady and peaceful.
He swallowed.
’I am laying next to a naked woman... almost without a care in the world.’
A beautiful, naked woman.
His face flushed red, and he quickly looked away, desperately trying not to focus on the feeling of her skin against his. He turned his thoughts elsewhere. Anywhere. But it was hard to focus when she was right there, soft, vulnerable, and utterly without shame.
He let out a slow, shaky breath.
’No. No, not going there. Absolutely not going there.’
To distract himself, he let his fingers gently stroke through her hair. He trailed his fingers along her scalp in slow, idle motions.
Vepice let out a quiet, pleased sound. A soft groan. Then she burrowed closer, draping a leg over his waist.
Kai tensed, then muttered to himself, "I am thankful I’m fully clothed... otherwise..." He forced himself to focus on anything else.
He ran simulations of fights over and over in his head, rotating combinations of techniques, sigil placements, barrier use.
All against the fighters from the arena and the techniques he witnessed.
By the time Vepice stirred again, the sun had risen fully.
She stretched beside him, her fingers brushing his chest. She looked up, bleary-eyed but smiling.
"Still here?" she asked sleepily.
"Where else would I be?" Kai said, his voice tight from suppressed tension. "You sort of... anchored me."
She blinked. "Oh. Right." She didn’t even try to move away. "You’re warm."
"Warm? I thought you were trying to keep the warmth off you?"
Instead of responding, she sat up slightly, dragging the sheets with her, thankfully, and rested her chin on her palm. "It didn’t bother you, did it?"
Kai hesitated.
"...No. It was just... surprising. You hardly know me, you know."
"You saved my life. You brought me out of that cave. You treat me like I matter." She tilted her head. "That’s more than anyone else has done for me in... well, in forever."
Kai went quiet. Then turned his head toward her.
"Did you have anyone other than your master?"
Vepice looked at the ceiling. "My mother. Just her. She died just before I changed and showed my variant bloodline. My father... Well, my master, be discarded me as soon as I changed and then blamed her death on me. My mother lived in a small settlement outside of Forne. My mother used to make paints from crushed flowers and she taught me how to draw."
"You draw?" Kai asked, caught off-guard.
Vepice smiled faintly. "Not well. But I liked it. I used to draw little patterns on the cave walls. Kept me sane."
Kai vaguely remembered small etchings in the cave walls.
Kai nodded slowly. "You’re full of surprises."
"I could say the same for you." She glanced at him.
"You pretend to be cold, but you’re softer than you let on."
"I’m not soft," he mumbled.
"You gave up half of your reward money to someone else. You let a scarred, freakish girl into your life. You ran your fingers through my hair while I slept. You’re kind."
He turned red again. "You noticed that?"
"I’m not made of stone, Kai. Of course I’m going to notice if someone touches me while I sleep."
"...Right."
’I’m so glad I didn’t touch her anywhere else...’
"How did your mother end up with your father?"
Vepice flinched at the thought.
"He said he found her at her village on the way to a business deal in another city and wooed her. My mother never said anything about it. I think he just forced her under his employment."
"Oh."
They fell into a gentle silence. Vepice sat up, still keeping the blanket wrapped around her. Her legs hung off the bed as she stretched, spine popping softly.
"Did you sleep at all?"
Kai nodded. "I did. First time in a while."
"You needed it." She paused. "Thank you. For letting me... stay with you. I feel safe with you, and I haven’t felt safe like this in forever."
He watched her, the way she sat calmly at the edge of the bed, no longer hiding, no longer afraid.
"You’re not a freak, by the way," he said quietly. "You never were."
Vepice didn’t look at him. But she smiled.
"...Thanks."
