Chapter 24: 24 - Dressed for Disaster

Anyway, now that it was officially morning— I decided it was time to take a bath.

I’m honestly glad that this world is not so underdeveloped that clean water is hard to come by, or that people rarely have the time to actually clean themselves.

Back in the village, they had wells and rivers nearby where I could wash up— and I made sure to clean myself there daily. I felt a deep sense of satisfaction doing that, especially since I had been stuck in a dark cave stinking like a corpse before I got out.

The room that Miguel rented for me had its own private bathroom. While the water still needed to be fetched using a heavy bucket— there was a well located right at the back of the inn, so it was very accessible.

And it’s not heavy at all for me...

I already gone ahead and stored some water in the room last night, and so, in total peace— I cleaned myself up.

After taking a cold-ass bath, I went ahead and dressed myself neatly in the new clothes I had bought.

I tightened the wide leather belt around my waist, cinching the ivory blouse so the fabric draped in heavy, asymmetrical folds across my chest. My trousers were a warm tobacco brown color, pleated perfectly for movement and finished with a long sash that trailed from my hip. To finish the look, I pulled on my black gloves and stepped into my knee-high leather boots, carefully tucking the loose fabric of the pants into the tops.

The shop I bought these from called this set casual clothes, but looking at myself in the mirror—

"Damn, all heads will definitely be turning once I walk past them."

I look fucking awesome, or should I say; I look beautiful.

I brushed my long hair with my fingers to get it just right, then after picking up the three thick books I had rented— I walked out of my room with full confidence.

I didn’t equip myself with any armor or weapons this time. I brought nothing at all with me except for the books.

I don’t plan to stay out for very long anyway.

... ... ...

"Wha...!"

Miguel saw me as soon as I stepped out of the room. He and the others were just about to come to my door and invite me to have some breakfast.

The shock on their faces was incredibly apparent as they stared at me.

"Does it fit me well?"

I asked with a smirk, already knowing exactly what the answer would be.

"It really does!"

Miguel answered without missing a single beat, and the two men standing behind him nodded their heads aggressively in agreement as well. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Before, you already looked handsome and noble, but now— you could even be mistaken for elven royalty!"

Miguel added enthusiastically. Elves are known to be naturally beautiful creatures in this world, and their appearance was something that even the gods acknowledged as being good.

I just smiled after hearing his high praise, then I just casually waved my hand in the air.

"Haha, thanks."

I said, feeling quite flattered.

Anyway, I told Miguel that I wouldn’t be eating any breakfast today as well— I told them that I had simply eaten too much last night and was still feeling full.

They understood and didn’t try to force me after that. They asked me what I was planning to do today, and I told them that I would be heading to the library to return some of the books I rented.

I also informed them that I would be leaving the city with them tomorrow morning, and they happily welcomed the news.

And so with that settled— I walked out of the inn and headed toward the library.

*****

I can feel a lot of eyes on me as I walk.

Young women would stop in their tracks and turn to look at me, and then after that— they would start whispering excitedly to each other.

Just as I thought would happen, with my face and these fancy clothes combined; I have become the absolute center of attention.

’Just as the delivery guy told me earlier, I will stand out more than anyone else.’

I know that I told myself that I shouldn’t attract any unnecessary attention— but damn, being treated like a celebrity just feels good.

’I might actually be a bit of an attention whore, huh.’

I told that to myself as I confidently made my way toward the library. Then, just as I was walking along the street—

"Sir Verc, is that you?"

I heard a familiar voice calling out from behind me. I turned around, and there; Geremie and Albert were standing. They both looked shocked as they stared at me.

"Wow, you look much more like a noble now... like, if I had to imagine what a noble looks like; you would come out as the very example of it."

Albert said as he looked over my new clothes. Geremie didn’t say anything at first, but seeing the look on his face— he was probably thinking the exact same thing.

"Where are you guys headed today?"

Moving on, I just brushed off their stunned reaction and asked that.

"Oh, we’re headed over to the guild to buy some new equipment."

Geremie, finally snapping out of his stupor, answered me.

"Thanks again for the gold coins you gave us. We can finally replace our old, worn-down armor."

Albert followed up, looking at me with a big smile on his face.

I just waved my hand casually to dismiss the thanks, then opening my mouth—

"I’m heading over to the library, so let’s walk together for a bit."

I suggested that. The two of them really didn’t mind the company, so they accepted almost immediately and with that— we continued walking down the street.

"So, it turns out you’re actually literate, huh."

Albert mumbled, looking at me as we walked.

I glanced over at him, then I just pointed at myself—

"Illegitimate son of a fallen noble family."

I said that. I always use this specific line to explain most of the things that I don’t really want to answer.

*****

Since the library was the first place we reached, Geremie and Albert decided to come inside and stay with me for a little while longer. We had some small conversations, talking about random stuff as we approached the reception table of the library and I handed back the books.

Nothing much really happened during the process. I still got a lot of attention from the people inside, but because Geremie and Albert were with me and we were talking; nobody actually tried to come up and talk to me.

’This is good, I can use these two as a shield so that nobody can approach me.’

I thought to myself.

Anyway, I had already returned the books. I’m done with my errands now— I just need to go back to the inn and spend the rest of the day training, then safely leave in the morning with Miguel and the others.

I was just about to walk out of the establishment, when suddenly—

"Wait!"

Someone called out loudly from behind me. It was the clear voice of a young lady.

’Oh, I guess someone is still bold enough to try and talk to me even in this situation... She must have really liked what she saw.’

I thought to myself with a smug smile. Geremie and Albert stopped talking, then they looked toward the source of the voice.

I did the exact same thing, and there—

"Huh?"

I saw a beautiful young woman with bright yellow hair falling down all the way to her waist. Her eyes were piercing and blue like the ocean, her skin was fair, and her lips were charming.

She was wearing something casual, but it just made her appearance stand out even more.

She was easily the most beautiful woman I had ever laid my eyes on in either world.

But for some reason... [Danger Sense] was screaming at me!

I felt the hairs on my body stand up slowly, and goosebumps started spreading throughout my entire body.

"Who are you?"

I asked, trying my absolute best to keep my face calm.

Tap—

The young woman took a step forward toward me, then opening her mouth—

"My name is Elianna Soleil Xanthe."

She introduced herself with total confidence. I was just about to say something back—

"I’m the saintess of The Radiant Church, it’s nice to meet you."

But she spoke again first and added that, all while staring at me with those sharp eyes.

And seeing that—

’Ugh, fuck...’

I couldn’t help but groan internally. I might actually die right now.
