*Tak Tak Tak*
"Stop and turn off the lantern, I can hear footsteps."
"Then something should be walking."
"No way, Maxwell! You are a fucking genius!"
"Hehe, thanks... Wait, is that sarcasm?"
"Shhh, shut up!"
Crouching behind the corner of the corridor, I started moving my head slowly to see what was moving there.
’Shit, not again!’
Standing in the middle of the way was silver armor with a long spear on its hand, moving forward and backward as if guarding the way.
Someone may think that it’s human, but after losing a hand to it I learnt my lesson.
That thing was just a soul inside armor. It was completely empty from the inside with the armor somehow connected to the soul.
"There are no traps, but... there is a spear knight in the way." I whispered to them, once they heard me, they went pale instantly , their faces almost drained of all colors.
"We... we just need to stop it from touching the walls — right?" Maxwell whispered nervously, his grip over his mace shaking.
Celestina took a deep breath. "We did it once, so we can do it twice. Get ready."
The plan was simple, we only had to stop it from touching the wall by all means and hit the aura core inside its helmet.
After talking for a little while, I merged with the darkness and emerged behind the knight silently.
’Got you!’
Using my gloves, I shot 5 dark tentacles to hold the hand with the spear and the other 5 for the helmet then started pulling it.
The knight didn’t turn around, but its horrifying soul was looking directly at me.
"Now!"
Celestina cast her spells instantly, and her holy golden light covered me completely, filling my body with strength and enhancing my stamina.
But that wasn’t enough. The next second, the knight began moving its arm as if my pull was nothing.
Just then, Andrea had made 3 whips of water, giving one to Celestina and using the other 2 himself, he he wrapped them around the knight’s hand and body while Celestina focused on the knight’s free hand.
It could still move — but it was slower now.
Taking the opportunity, Maxwell got close to it and started hitting its helmet with a barrage of mace swings.
*BAM!BAM!BAM!BAM!*
The Knight’s helmet started breaking due to his hits and the darkness decay, for a moment, we thought that it would die soon, but all of a sudden—
*CRACK!*
"Argh!"
Using its head, the knight shattered Maxwell’s nose effortlessly, then kicked him between his legs before piercing his stomach using her spear.
"Maxwell!" Andrea shouted, launching a rapid barrage of compressed water bullets at the knight, but they barely affected it.
Enduring all our forces, the knight started moving towards the wall.
On the ground, Maxwell, with blood in his mouth, started trying to pull the knight using the wind.
Thinking about something to do, I made up my mind.
’Fine, I’m doing that crap.’
Focusing my control on my soul, I left my body and rushed to the knight quickly.
Once I was close enough, I didn’t dare to attack the soul, but I decided to devour it instead.
The last time I tried to attack that soul directly it deflected my attack to my head making me unable to feel my head or use my senses. It was like they put it in the challenge just to stop me.
’Please work. Please work.’
Putting my hand on its shoulder, a black mist had started leaking out of my hand before covering the knight’s soul.
My lips curled into a grin as I noticed that the knight started shaking in its place as if in pain.
It kept moving forward, and I kept devouring it. The more it got closer to the wall the slower it became.
It raised its hand, only 10 cm away from touching the wall, but eventually, I devoured it completely forcing the body to stop.
*Thud!*
[You got x2 soul fruits]
Finally, the knight fell lifelessly on the ground ending that horrifying hell.
"Haa... haa." I fell on my knees gasping for breath after my soul returned completely.
"Fuck! S-saintess, there is a hole in my stomach! A fucking hole in my stomach!"
"W-just wait! I will heal you now." Celestina rushed to Maxwell and started casting healing spells.
Andrea finally left the whips and looked at the deep bloody marks on his hands while cursing loudly.
I opened my mouth to say something, but before I could, my vision started darkening.
"Please, let it be good memories this time." Accepting my fate, I closed my eyes and got ready for the pain.
Finally, the knight’s memories started playing inside my soul.
•••
"Traitors..."
I crawled on the ground with my spear, trying to reach the traitor that cut my legs and broke my arm.
"Come on, Gabriel. Don’t make it hard on both of us." Using his hammer he slammed my back, breaking my bones and leaving my coughing blood.
But I just raised my spear slowly. The spear tip just touched his neck barely scratching it.
The traitor’s eyes stared at me with pity, then he sighed. "I can’t understand. If you had just accepted my offer you wouldn’t be in this condition now."
"Do you really believe that the Duke’s daughter has any feelings for you? Idiot! She treated you like that to manipulate you! You weren’t the only one! I have seen her real face with my own eyes."
He let out a small laugh, but his smile faded quickly as he gritted his teeth. "Look what that bitch Elizabeth has done now. She has sacrificed all of you to run away with the Duke’s treasures! She didn’t only betray you but even her own father!"
I ignored everything that he said. What did he know about her? He wouldn’t understand how kind and smart she was.
If she really abandoned me, then I was sure that she didn’t have any other choice.
She was the one who took an orphan like me from the streets and treated me not like an animal — but a real human being.
She was the one that bought me this spear, she was the one who bought me this armor, and she was the only one who I truly loved.
If my death was what she wanted, then let it happen.
The traitor sighed for one last time, and the next moment, my vision turned into darkness.
•••
"Grahaha!"
While guarding the passage, I suddenly heard the sound of someone laughing.
Shifting my gaze towards it, my eyes landed on a huge monster with a humanoid bull body holding an axe in his hand.
’Protect... Elizabeth...’
The monster charged towards me with a horrifying speed. I stabbed its chest with my spear, but it wasn’t deep enough.
The next moment, its shoulder hit me and threw me to the wall.
*BOOM!*
Crushed on the wall, I saw the monster charging at me again, so instantly, I abandoned my armor and merged with the wall.
*BAM!*
The monster hit the empty armor but instead of waiting for it to realize that, I turned into tenths of spears and pierced its body from all angles until it turned into dead flesh.
My core and soul moved to the armor — the same armor Elizabeth gave me — and returned to my place holding my spear.
Elizabeth was safe, and that’s all I wanted.
’Every... thing... for... her."
•••
"His body is getting better now, he isn’t shaking anymore."
"Fuck! Why is he always ending with death memories?! Is this kid cursed?"
"If you did your job well he wouldn’t be like that. He is just a child..."
"Oh oh, he opened his eyes!"
The first thing I saw after opening my eyes was Maxwell’s face with the stupid grin on his face.
"Are you okay now?" I heard Celestina’s voice coming from above me, then I noticed that her hands were wrapped around me while I was sitting on her lap.
"I think..." I answered her with hesitation. "But I don’t like what I just saw."
Moving my head towards Andrea, I saw in his eyes a mix of pity and envy which made me confused.
I understood the pity, but why the hell was he envying me?!
"Can you tell us what you saw... I mean if you want to." Celestina asked with a warm smile on her face, so I simply told them everything.
Their expressions turned from confusion to sadness and then shock instantly, their mouths opened wide taking the shape of O.
"Those things were humans!!" Maxwell yelled at me as if it was my fault.
Andrea’s shock vanished instantly and got replaced with a wide smirk.
He opened his hand to Maxwell, and Maxwell clicked his tongue before handing him a... chocolate bar?
"..."
’Did they have a bet that we don’t know about?’
"Cough," Celestina coughed, taking out attention. "Take his aura core and body for now, we can think about that later."
"Yes sir... I should have eaten the chocolate."
Listening to her, I took the knight’s armor while Maxwell took the core, and for the spear, Celestina took it for emergencies.
I wanted to understand how that armor could keep the soul stable like a body, so they agreed to give it to me each time we killed a knight.
"Let’s go, I have a good feeling this time!" Maxwell picked up the lantern and started carefully moving forward.
We followed him while focusing our attention on any potential traps such as a hidden string or a strange slab.
After walking for 30 minutes, we finally stopped.
Because there was a fucking wall stopping us!
What the hell was that knight protecting if there was nothing?!
"Dead end..." Celestina stared at the wall with despair.
"Fuck! Told you, Maxwell. Told you we should have turned left!" Andrea shouted as he created a water spear on his hand.
But before he could throw it at Maxwell, Celestina and I caught him from the back.
"Don’t stop me! I’m killing that bastard today!"
Maxwell ignored all of us and kept looking at the wall silently before opening his mouth: "M-maybe the maze is alive... maybe this wall is a monster that has been following us since the start!"
The moment he finished talking, he started throwing egg bombs at the wall with a rapid speed.
"Show me your real form!"
’Shit, they are losing their minds again!’
"Hold him for a second." Celestina suddenly left Andrea to me and summoned her staff.
’BONK!’
With one strong swing of her staff on the back of his head, Andrea lost his consciousness immediately and fell on the ground with a loud thud.
The next moment, I had wrapped my golves’ tentacles around Maxwell, stopping him for a moment before Celestina knocked him down too.
I looked at the unconscious bodies on the ground before sighing in frustration: "They are losing it, we should either leave this place quickly or find Braham."
Genuinely speaking, I couldn’t blame them.
We were living in this maze for who knows how much time with all the dangers inside. Without day and night, we were only sure that we didn’t spend 2 months yet.
For eating, we had to rely on the food we got from killing the forest monsters because finding monsters with real meat here was rare, though the real problem was the water.
About the sleeping, Celestina didn’t have to sleep while I needed only 2 hours so only Andrea and Maxwell needed to sleep, but it was too hard to find a good place without getting distracted by something like a fucking minotaur!
And let’s not talk about all the dead ends we found. From every 3 paths we had taken, 1 of them had a dead end. What kept me and Celestina sane until now were probably our traits.
Celestina didn’t talk. She moved to the path we came from with an ink bottle on her hand then drew some runes on the ground.
The runes gleamed with golden light before a golden barrier materialized blocking the way completely.
"You should sleep too. Fortunately, the dead end means that I have to focus on only one path."
I hesitated for a moment before accepting her offer.
We all were tired, so tired.
I closed my eyes and gave up for my exhaustion, hoping that we would find the exit soon.
That was all we wanted, and hoping was all I could do.
