Chapter 22 - The Future Eden

What now?

Rael did not know what the human soldiers would do now that the enemy lay dead.

He had delivered the finishing blow and stolen the spotlight, and it crossed his mind that they might have wanted to capture the tuxedo monster alive.

All these thoughts reminded Rael of his past life, where he had worried about people's opinions and views of him.

His old social anxiety would have erupted, but not in this life.

He pushed away those concerns and looked at the leader, Jayme.

"You were a great help! Thank you!" Jayme said, raising his hand behind his head as though scratching an itch on his helmet.

Rael nodded. "You're welcome!"

Just that simple exchange lifted Rael's mood.

Jayme might have suspicions about him and his origins, but his gratitude was genuine.

Rael stayed cautious, yet much calmer.

First approach was a huge success. We learned a lot and became more compatible. Seeing that monster's heart through his flesh and turning the iron in his blood into needles worked so well because of you, Shiran. Good job.

[Hehe! Thank you so much, Lord Rael! Epic!]

[My deepest congratulations, Lord Rael.]

While Rael spoke with his partners in his mind, Jayme's teammates walked over, staring at Rael in his lion form.

He was on all fours, a metallic little beast looking up at them.

Despite his steel body, he had an adorable aura that tempted the confident gunwoman to crouch next to him, gazing into his eyes.

"He's so cute! And he sounds even cuter!" she said, bracing her helmet with both hands as if daydreaming about hugging him.

Do I really sound that cute?

[Lord Rael's voice is a blend of your own and Shiran's. It is indeed very cute.]

You sound proud, Dominica.

[I did not mean to. My apologies if it was odd.]

No, it is fine. I am actually happy.

"Hey, little guy," the gunwoman said. "Are you a summon or a creation? Or are you native to this virtual world? If so, maybe I can keep you. I just need the Commander's permission, and I'll store you in my Project Watch. We'll live together."

"I'm a human, like you," Rael replied.

"Eh?" she whispered.

Her teammates reacted in the same way, shocked and confused.

Given his childish frame and voice, they found it strange that he roamed a virtual reality world, fighting serious battles.

Recalling how Rael fought in both human and lion form, the soldiers exchanged worried looks.

[Are you sure, Lord Rael?]

Yes. If these people can store a projection in a Project Watch, they would discover the truth sooner or later. They seem nice, so I trust their commander will be reasonable.

[Understood.]

Suddenly, a loud, commanding voice echoed in the headsets of the six soldiers.

[Return to headquarters, and bring your new friend along!]

All of them snapped to attention, with Jayme giving a salute.

[YES, MA'AM!]

It was obvious that someone had just contacted them.

Rael felt a moment of tension, but Jayme eased his worries again by squatting down and tapping the visor on his helmet.

The glass panel turned transparent, revealing a pale face and short brown hair.

Jayme smiled at Rael.

"Sorry, but can you come with us? Our commander is not a bad person. She might seem tough, but she's got a great heart. Trust me."

You sound like a scammer, Jayme.

All five of his teammates had the same thought.

Rael gave a casual nod.

That settled it.

They set off toward the headquarters of this virtual world, located at the forest's edge.

Two of Jayme's teammates dragged the humanoid tuxedo corpse over roots and rocks, so it no longer looked the same.

Along the way, the six soldiers talked among themselves.

The gunwoman asked, "You think that lion kid is from The Future Eden?"

Jayme replied, "I hope not. I met a kid from there once. His eyes were like the commander's, as though he had invaded other worlds and fought for his life. I swear his stare felt heavier."

"That's impossible," Adrian the archer said. "Our commander worked under the late Mr. Ainsworth, a Colonel Of Conquest. She really visited other worlds."

Jayme clicked his tongue. "That's the vibe I got. Sad, isn't it?"

Adrian nodded faintly. "It is."

They knew little of The Future Eden, a project that created super soldiers to conquer other worlds and protect Earth.

The military recruited children with abilities from across the globe for this, training them relentlessly at a young age.

Since the world valued military strength above all, society looked the other way, exposing a human hypocrisy.

Before long, Rael saw white cubes as large as three-story buildings floating above the trees, drifting around one another in irregular patterns.

When Rael and the others stood in a clearing, a bright blue light beamed down from the highest cube, taking the soldiers and Rael into its interior.

Inside, their commander waited for her team and the unusual newcomer.

[May you succeed, Lord Rael.]

[Good luck, Lord Rael!]

So you two are leaving me alone to face the commander, huh?
