Chapter 142: Chapter 142

~ NYSSA

I woke with a gasp, heart racing as I tried to detangle myself from my sheets.

Sometime during the night, I’d managed to wrap myself up like a fucking burrito, and coupled with the horrible dream I had, it was not a great way to wake uo.

"Fuck!" I screamed as I fell to the ground, hissing as my elbows slammed hard against the floor. "What the fuck!"

I finally managed to get out of the stupid blanket, but my hands were still shaking, and I could not bring myself to calm down... not yet.

I’d dreamed that I was back in that basement, and for a moment, I thought the entire talk with Rowan was a lie and I’d just imagined it. It was truly the most terrifying moment of my life.

"But you’re out now," a soft voice said in my head.

It took me a moment to acknowledge what I heard and as I did, I gasped. "You’re back!"

"Hi."

My wolf sounded weak, her voice was low and strained as if she had just woken up from a long nap. I felt her as well, and I could tell she was not at full strength yet, but I was so fucking relieved that she was back.

For a brief moment, I feared that I would never get her back because of how long it took to get her in the first place.

"It’s going to take a lot more than some wolf’s bane to kill me," she teased. "I see you’ve been busy since I’ve been gone. You couldn’t at least wait until I was back before you fucked him?"

My cheeks warmed. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."

"And why the hell would you not agree to just mate with him? You could be Queen!"

I shrugged. "Being Queen has never been a dream for me. I don’t just want to walk into it blindly."

She exhaled deeply. "I don’t know what you’re waiting for, Nyssa, but you better mate with that man before I take control and do it for you."

She slammed the mind link shut without another word

I could not help my smile as I got dressed for the day. I walked with a pep in my step, skipping and whistling as I made my way towards the dining room.

Rowan wasn’t seated, but Aria was, and when she noticed me, she raised a brow in amusement.

"You look happy."

"I am."

She smiled wide but as quickly as it came, it dropped and was replaced with a grimace. "Please tell me it has nothing to do with my brother and your date yesterday."

I couldn’t stop the laugh that burst out of me. "No, it’s not about that. My wolf is back!"

"OH," she sighed in relief. "That’s good to hear. Congratulations. How did your date go?"

I shrugged, lowering myself into the seat next to her. "It depends on how you look at it."

I gave her a vague summary of everything that happened, as well as my decision. By the time I was done, she was silent, hands folded neatly in front of her. She stared at me with an intense look in her eyes, her brows knitted in thought.

"Being Queen is mostly paperwork," she explained slowly. "Rowan will handle most of what he is already doing for the general kingdom but you will handle most of the pack work. It’s nothing more than what you would have been doing as Beta."

That relieved me, but only a little, because I wasn’t being entirely honest.

Being Queen was only one part of my worries. The other... well, I wasn’t sure it was something I wanted to bring up with Rowan just yet.

"Did you know when he... you know... killed my parents?"

She went deathly still before nodding slowly. "I wasn’t privy to most of the details. I knew of the people he was going after. It was a whole network and your parents just happened to be a part of it."

"Did they have files or anything?" I asked. "I’ve seen what he has on them and I just... I know they took kids, and I’m worried that..."

The words caught in my throat and no matter how hard I tried to force them out, they would not form. Thankfully, I didn’t have to because Aria reached for me, squeezing my hand firmly as she offered me a small encouraging smile.

"You’re wondering if they took you too," she finished for me and I nodded. "Rowan is the best person to ask about this but from what he told me, he didn’t find any files. He also didn’t want to alert the other packs to the dangers so he couldn’t get a good enough reason to search your hours. If there are any, it should be there."

I shook my head. "It can’t be. I know every inch of that house."

"I don’t know what else to say, Nyssa. That’s... it has to be there. If it isn’t, then maybe they got rid of it before they were caught."

My thoughts ran a mile a minute.

I hadn’t moved my parents things, not since they passed but I had gone over that house multipole times. Surely if there was something to be seen, I would have noticed.

"Maybe you didn’t notice because you didn’t know what to look for," my wolf suggested. "Talk to Rowan. You could return for a day at least... figure things out."

As if on cue, the doors opened and Rowan walked in.

His hair was tied back in a man bun and he was tapping away furiously at his phone. He made his way over to where I sat and without looking away from his device, he leaned over and placed a soft kiss at the top of my head.

"Good morning, little wolf," he murmured, voice low and husky. "Did you sleep well?"

My insides turned to jelly.

"I... yes."

Aria shot me a knowing look.

I turned away from her, trying to hide my flaming cheeks as I turned back to my mate who had taken his usual seat. He poured himself a cup of coffee, and without adding any creamer or sugar, he lifted it to his lips.

He seemed perfectly at ease... it was now or never.

"Rowan?"

He looked up at me instantly. "Yes, Nyssa?"

"I have a... request."
